Shapiro punting

keyser

Veteran
One of the things I thought was pretty good tonight was the punting, especially that first punt. When I heard the announcers say "Lechler"*, I thought that made sense, and was impressed that we had brought him in during Free Agency.

I found out later, though, that Shapiro did all the punting. While I'd want to see more than one outing to think he's better than one of the best punters ever in the NFL, it made me wonder if we might have an actual battle at that position. I haven't been paying attention to this in the TC updates: is this actually a competition?

*Which brings me to another thing - that had to be about the worst broadcast I've ever seen. Besides the horrendous video problems and the occasional sound problems, they made mistakes identifying players (a big deal in preseason, since I don't recognize players by number yet) and spent a long time talking to the Texans' president about clear plastic bags while the Texans are putting together a nice drive (I still don't know who made some of those plays).

I'd be willing to bet my house there is no battle to speak of. No need to put a 37 year old punter on fluky turf only for him to have a blowout trying to tackle a returner. We already know what Shane can do. Shapiro definitely was a bright spot though so I hope the coaches giving him a shot gets him a roster spot on another team.

Wow, that was Shapiro?

I said a whole ago that Shapiro was a good kicker. He can also kick field goals. I thi k he's a guy they'd like to get onto the practice squad to be lecers future replacement. But I'm not sure he clears waivers.

Could they possibly have 3 kickers/punters? Doesn't seem likely with all the talent elsewhere, but if Shapiro keeps booming them like that he'll be a tough cut....

It will be very interesting to see what Shane Lechler does in the upcoming Miami game.

A mysterious injury>>>>>>>>>>IR while he practices not only punting, but also KOs and FGs.........

Funny I was thinking the same thing ... Tho I think he might have to continue to perform at that level. Maybe they tell him to go shank a few .... so they can PS him.

Lechler doesn't need to punt this early, missed asignment and some kid runs into his leg.

Shapiro should be kicking in this league, imo...

A.Shapiro punts 59 yards to MIN 9, Center-J.Weeks. M.Sherels to MIN 17 for 8 yards (J.Tuggle).
.
A.Shapiro punts 32 yards to MIN 6, Center-J.Weeks, downed by HST-S.Keo.

A.Shapiro punts 46 yards to MIN 38, Center-J.Weeks, downed by HST. PENALTY on HST-E.Pleasant, Interference with Opportunity to Catch, 15 yards, enforced at MIN 38. Penalty on MIN-H.Smith, Illegal Substitution, superseded.

A.Shapiro punts 52 yards to MIN 22, Center-J.Weeks. S.Burton to MIN 33 for 11 yards (J.Starling; R.Griffin).

Until I came across this source, I found very little interesting background information on Shapiro. The "kid" has lots of talent....and even more potential.

Battle.....yeah...right.......
what are you smoking....lechtler the punter...shapiro is trying out for other teams......man...the lack of intelligence in here cracks me up.....

I really want this guy on the team! Maybe all of a sudden, he will have a toe nail injury that will place him IR/ stash!:kitten:

We can definitely be the kings (or queens for the women here) of overreactions sometimes. This thread is proof positive of that.

No it isn't. He is a nice surprise and showed good leg. I prefer a cheaper option at K and P and use them as long term answers rather than keep paying for over priced vets. We're getting to a point as a team where every dollar spent matters. It may not seem like much for Lechler or Graham, but if you can save even 1 or 2 million dollars it is worth it. Especially since both younger players are damn near equal to their older counterparts.

Graham is no longer on this team, and I believe Lechlar took a pay-cut because he wanted to play here

Kubiak practically begged Lechler to join the team. After signing one of the best players to ever play his position, and then having him take a big pay cut you don't release him unless he's stinking up the place. Am I in the twilight zone or something?

We surely don't do that to one of our own Texan. He played his college ball here, could be a story book ending with Lechlar retiring a champion. Or we could drop him , he sign for the vet min in Foxboro and bite us in the ass. No thanks ill take the first one. :fans:

I mean, let's just say all of our younger backs go out and have 100 yards apiece next game. We might as well just release Foster and go with the younger, cheaper options right? They clearly showed they could flash in 1 game so it only makes sense. I just don't understand sometimes.

Yeah it is when people start making statements that a rookie is damn near equal to a likely hall of famer.

When talking about Punters, its not even remotely close to slap in the face calling a rookie and could be HOF (wont happen) equals. The 1 or 2 yards you lose per punt is well worth saving 2 million bucks when it means not losing someone like Watt, Cushing or any other MORE IMPORTANT player.
