Shantee Orr

I'm surprised nobody has really talked about him this offseason. As a exclusive rights free agent, I think its a priority that we sign him after a very promising 2005 campaign in which he achived (in a limited starting role after Babin got hurt/benched):

7 sacks
39 tackles
2 passes defensed
4 forced fumbles

From the time Shantee took the field and chased down Michael Vick in late 2003 I had a feeling we got someone that could potentially be a starter for the OLB position. Now with the defense changing to a 4-3, how do some of you feel to where his role may/may not suit the Texans this year?

definatly should be one of our top priorities.

He has been an outstanding player on both defense and special teams.

Sure we talk about him. There's a few posts that talk about him. We have pointed out plenty of times how he and Antwan Peek seem to be in the QB's face quite often. As a matter fact I just asked in a post if they should be same side or oppposites depending on whether or not we keep Peek standing up. And yes I know no one is trying to look at every post or even go more than 2-3 pages deep into a post... I'm just saying :)

I think he is already penciled in as our starting strongside backer. He will be a terror coming off the edge against TEs and RBs are not gonna want to see him. He is not a liability in coverage and has pretty decent movement in his hips so with some work he will improver there. He is solid against the run and due to his small stature pretty good in traffic. We will likely tender him this year and work out a deal next year. I would think if he duplicates his year and shows his talent again he will get a deal pretty similar to Wong's and Wong will likely be on his way out. That injury may be the end of him.

I noticed the guy in the preseason last year and really liked him...I hope it works out and he gets a starting spot!

the problem is with him and peek we have two guys who would be going for the same position...both of them are not going to start at the sametime...one is going to be on the bench the other is going to be starting and peek is probably the starter

Peek qualifies as a pass rushing DE. he has the size.

He could also provide depth at OLB.

That being said.. why couldnt Orr and Peek both play OLB? we need two and Babin will most likely become a DE.

^ greenwood will likely start at Will
peek at Sam (with Orr competiting there and backing him up)
free agent/draft pick/wong at Mike

babin RDE

Peek can't cover good TE's...he won't be the sam imo

Agreed. Peek is lousy in coverage. Part of why he was such a nobody last year - Fangio constantly had him back, either in zone or man. Let the guy do what he loves to do: rush and stick the hell out of people.

^ (to Vinny) have you since changed your mind? i remember you saying when you first saw what Smith said about Peek and the other lbs that you thought he was looking at Peek at Sam?

I have to disagree with this. I don't think Peek has the cover skills to play OLB in the 4-3. I think we will be used as a down rush specialist where Shantee can and should be our every down OLB.

I have been counting on him to be one of our stongest defensive playmakers next year and I think he will deliver.

I like Peek as a motor guy. Turn him on and let him run wild.

"Hey Antwan...See QB - kill QB!"

peek might not be able to cover but if we put him at DE then who is our strongside DE?...babin and peek and orr are all too small to play the strongside DE...richard smith and holland have both said they're not sure about peek on what position he will play...holland was leaning more towards LB for him and smith was leaning more towards DE...so i think it's totally up in the air...if i was smith i think you have to bring in atleast 2 LB's one being a Mike backer and i would bring in atleast 2 DE's...both being of the size or size potential of being an everydown strongside DE

Peek does not have the ability to cover TE's or RB's. He does not recognize WR's running crossing routes. He is quick off the snap, and agressive with his moves. He is a situational pass rusher.

Our Front 7 on 1st and 2nd downs:

Babin------TJ------Smith------Mario/other draft pick/FA

------Orr----A. Brooks/FA/Draft pick------Greenwood

Our front 7 on obvious pass rushing downs:

Peek------TJ------Walker-----Mario/other draft pick/FA
-----Orr/Polk-----A.Brooks/FA/Draft pick------Greenwood/Polk

Looks good although Walker will probably be let go and we would probably see Payne in on some of the early downs.

In one of the videos on the home page the coaches talk about looking at him in the linebacker group, but the more I look at a cover 2 base defense the more I see Peek as a situational player that will be used in packages. I see him struggling in space and I am not convinced he is a starting caliber 4-3 DE. Most of our linebackers fit this description since they are all tweeners who are smallish College DE’s who would have been later round draft picks had they been drafted into a 4-3 teams' system. In essence, we are loaded with late round project (high % of draft failure) DE's if you projected these guys to 4-3 teams to begin with….so it will be interesting how we shape this position as we lead into the draft.

Peek will be a DE, most likely starting. He will get in the 260-270lbs. range. Plus, you cannot just look at Antwan's weight, the guy is an atheltic freak who is incredibly strong for his size. Peek has the strength of your average 300 pounder with the speed of a guy around 230, thus, he is perfect for weakside DE. I believe that Babin can play the strong side, the most important thing is to have a sure tackler at the Sam LB position. Orr fills this bill and can also be used as a blitzer.

I don't know why people disregard Babin as an option at SDE. He was able to hold his own against OT's while standing up (when he was healthy).

As far as Orr, he could be a beast at SOLB; rushing the QB, making tackles, coverage, he can do it all. Peek should be the RE.
