Sexual Assault Suits Against Watson

But see that's the thing to me tho...Save for a few companies, The NFL in my mind isn't any different from any other sports league or major business corporation.

It's different because most multi-billion dollar companies don't use taxpayer funds to build their places of business.

That fact alone makes pro sports leagues different than all other businesses.

There's degrees of assault with correlating degrees of trauma experienced by victims. Word games and the blurring of those degrees does injustice to those who suffer the more serious assault. The same words shouldn't be used to describe the trauma experienced by someone who got flashed compared to someone who got violently raped. Cue moronic study to show that the trauma is the same.................................sorry, but despite your study, common sense dictates that there is a difference. The CDC defining sexual violence as 'sexual activity where consent isn't given' takes away from Sue Robinson finding that what took place wasn't 'violent'. Not only did she find that it wasn't violent, the NFL never accused Watson of violence. 'There is no allegation that Mr. Watson exerted any force against any of the therapists.' Word games take away from victims of worse.

Everybody got their day in court. The Texas GJ surmised that Buzbee didn’t present enough evidence to go forward. Hardin and Watson pushed for and got settlements paid out to each of the women. How much….not sure we’ll ever know, but it was obviously enough to send everyone home. Robinson was given the case and based on evidence, not accusations, decided a 6 game suspension would suffice. I’m sure Watson and Goodell have spoken and came to an agreement on what both parties would consider acceptable punishment and Robinson’s punishment fell within the guidelines. Watson will sit 6 games, which should benefit the Texans in the 2023 NFL Draft. I don’t think Goodell would appeal b/c he’s probably as relieved as the next person in line that this nightmare has finally come to an end. The start of the season will put this mess in the rear view mirror.

Again, setting aside emotion, since any reaction I would have would solely be based on 3rd party information. I don’t think any of the women refused the settlement and chose to pursue a criminal case. If they have chosen to turn the page, then I will as well.
Great post. Well said. There is one who haven't settled and if she does, what's left. Solis, the 1st one to come forward, I wonder if she settled.

Finally, NOW gets involved.

DESHAUN WATSONWOMEN ORG. RIPS 6 GAME SUSPENSION... 'Insulting & Dangerous!'
EXCLUSIVE

"It is unacceptable, insulting, and dangerous!"

That's the National Organization of Women (NOW) responding to Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension for sexual misconduct ... telling TMZ Sports it clearly shows "money talks, and women are unheard."

Watson's six-game suspension was announced Monday after disciplinary officer, former U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson ruled the Browns QB violated the NFL's personal conduct policy, sidelining Watson for roughly a third of the season.

NOW -- the nation's leading organization for women's rights -- says the ruling is "unacceptable, insulting, and dangerous" ... but not surprising, 'cause the league and its players have been in similar situations before.

"The NFL has had a violence against women problem for years -- and everyone knows it," NOW said.

A USA TODAY Opinion Piece:

Every time the NFL has a chance to stand for women, it fails. Spectacularly.

Retired judge Sue L. Robinson deserves no small amount of criticism, whether it’s for the laughably light six-game suspension she recommended for Deshaun Watson on Monday morning or her rationalization for it because his predatory behavior was “nonviolent sexual conduct.” It’s that kind of 1950s thinking, that assaults and harassment don’t really count unless violence is involved, that perpetuates rape culture and marginalization of women.

Robinson’s assessment, and her decision, were also based on the violations leveled against Watson by the NFL and the evidence the league provided. As it always does when it comes to women, the league did the bare minimum.

It claimed it wanted at least a yearlong suspension, yet presented evidence from just four of the two dozen cases against Watson.

"The NFL’s investigation was conducted by two former prosecutors with decades of experience investigating sexual assault cases. Although Mr. Watson allegedly worked with more than 60 massage therapists during the 15-month period beginning in the fall of 2019 through the winter of 2021, the NFL only investigated the claims of the 24 therapists suing Mr. Watson for damages. Of these 24 complainants, the NFL investigators were only able to interview 12; of those 12, the NFL relied for its conclusions on the testimony of 4 therapists ('the therapists')," Robinson wrote.

I love the game of football and definitely am glad we have a team in Houston. Missed the Oiler days and remember when we didn’t have a team to cheer for on Sundays as well. As a female fan of the sport, I am definitely disappointed in the ruling especially given the findings by Robinson;however, not surprised given prior decisions from the NFL on treatment of women.
Sadly, any average individual without the financial backing and fame would have lost their job for such actions that have been disclosed. The NFL has the opportunity to make a statement that they truly care about their female fan base and does not support this type of personal conduct. Mr. Watson’s behavior certainly is not worthy of being a role model for our youth nor the sport of football. We teach children to respect each other. Yet. the NFL and the NFLPA have shown consequences are negotiable.

When Barkley made the commercial about not being a role model, that should be taken to heart. My father and uncles were my role models, not an actor nor athlete. Hakeem is my favorite athlete of all time, we share the same birthday. Do we remember Young Dream fighting all the time? I get your point, I just wish we didn't expect entertainers to raise our kids.

I agree with you in regards to role models. My grandparents are my role models even still today.

Expecting them not to go around committing sexual assault isn’t much of an ask. At least it shouldn’t be.

This is what I'm resting my hope upon : Roger Goodell waits until the third day and then he or his representative announces that while he appreciates and respects Robinson, her own ruling stated that Watson meets all the criteria for violating the code of conduct. He will say behavior cannot be tolerated and suspends DW a year with reinstatement to NFL possible after that year. If anyone compares this to ownership issues, Roger will state that those issues will be addressed as they develop allowing all legal processes to be utilized.

I don't expect people in the public to be perfect. Nobody on this board know Watson or any athlete prior to this incident. Just like we didn't know Cosby was drugging women even though he was on talk shows talking about spanish fly. Never knew Kevin Spacey, nor Weinstein were creeps either. We're not in their world, so we shouldn't compare our regular folk life to their infamous life.

That’s not being perfect. That’s being decent and not a piece of trash.

You're emotionally surprised someone in the public eye turned out to have issues. Is this the 1st time you've witnessed this? I'm 51 and have seen this happen.Whether its a guy beating his girlfriend or sexual assault. This has been happening in with public figures all the time.

thats trash.

problem Goodell and the NFL owners have is they created this new process in conjunction with the NFLPA to settle its disciplinary matters ……….to correct its previous &$”@-ed up way where Goodell was basically judge, jury and executioner and the punishments being dolled out followed no real consistent pattern.

So while Goodell and the NFL did negotiate the right to appeal her recommendation as was agreed upon in this new process, they’ll look kinda stupid by challenging her ruling……this her 1st ruling under this new process by the way as an “independent & impartial” arbitrator of sorts. Basically the whole process begins to look like a sham if Goodell can just come in after the fact with a “thanks, but no thanks judge…..this is what we’re gonna impose”.

Goodell remains king just slight nod to another level to make players think he is being fair while waggling $. I do not see him giving up any authority.

Her "first ruling under new process" seems to say she will be in the process going forward. First I've heard anything along those lines. I could see them going back to her again if need arises but my understanding she was hired for this case alone. Six game decision makes me think that will be her last shot.
I do not think NFL will look stupid in over riding her six game decision but that is possibly because I think it was a stupid decision.

She will if the NFLPA wants her to be dependent upon the case. And again her decision wasnt based on just her thoughts. She took in past decisions and punishments dolled out by the commish. So again he and the NFL look stupid if they come back and say thanks but no thanks we’ll take it from here basically b/c they cant handle the pressure from the public of being criticized for their own past decisions.

you cant preach about protecting the shield when you’ve got an owner in washington shitting all over it as we speak. Those guys are supposed to be held to an even higher standard than the players.

This isn’t a case of he said she said. It’s a pattern. No, I’ve never seen an athlete pretend to set up massages and assault women over 20 times. Whether you think this happens all of the time, it still does not make it okay.

Anyone growing up idolizing an entertainer/athlete, that's poor parenting. My dad was my hero, not someone hooping or throwing a football or someone on the tv. This ruling has more to do with the system much more than society as a whole.
Well everybody grows up in totally different environments. You have some that grew up watching sports and be like, that’s who I want to be like when I grow up. So many people grew up without a father figure in their lives. I wanted to be like the Dream when I was a youngster. Single parent home and my mother did an excellent job in raising me. I’m pretty sure we all have a fictional character as a hero as a kid. Lol

Actually i don't have a favorite player per se anymore...DW4 got knocked off that mantle the minute he asked for his trade after signing his deal here. But i like alot of guys. It's fake IMO b/c the focus is & has only ever been about the number of alleged victims & the salacious details of what allegedly happened...not actual evidence. The numbers are what Buzzard used to sway public opinion, its what the media has used as "where there's smoke there's fire' talk show fodder for forever..... & its what folks like only want to focus on. Meanwhile Snyder's toxic work enviornment of sexual harrassment & verbal abuse...next to nothing.

Meanwhile you're casually dismissing some key things that played huge.

A. the no-bills. the standard of proof in grand juries for an indictment is only...what, probable cause? Buzzard & only Buzzard got to take his "evidence" & cases thru not 1 but 2 grand juries.............................. they didn't even find enough probable cause for an indictment........instead of respecting the decision you guys resorted to silly assertions that everyone was dumb who sat in on those grand juries...ok.

B. The fact that this was an independent FEDERAL judge who looked at what was presented to her & she...a female who you'd think would be at least somewhat sympathetic...........apparently she didn't even think there was a whole lot there to recommend a harsher suspension. You have to figure that the no-bills factored huge into her decision there.....

Instead what you an other do is say..."well, she's an idiot!" & that goes for any and everyone who don't agree with the pitchfork crew.

You guys just need to let it go and move on.

Except she said in the report she thinks Derrick was lying to her.

Also there's a big difference between owners and players when it comes to this kinda stuff. We may not like it, but the world is unfair sometimes.

See: Your favorite Sexual Predator only getting a 6 game suspension.

You could argue most Houston sports fans don't care enough about this or the Texans for that matter to have it run 240 pages. Its a few overzealous folks..but i digress. Yet every time i come to this website there this thread is sitting atop the forum.
Then don't come in here if it bothers you.

Did you read Robinson's report? I would love to hear your thoughts on a player you obviously have a thing for, after you read it.

This decision setback women who have been sexually
assaulted, what woman would ever want to bring charges knowing there are judges like Robinson out there that know the dude is most likely guilty but only give him a slap on the wrist.

They both impact Houston which is what you fail to understand. You think all the owners aren't paying attention to what is alleged to have happened in Washington and aren't assessing their own teams' FO work enviornments? You think what's going on in Washington didn't factor into Cal and Janice McNair's decisions to settle those lawsuits as quickly as they did?

There's an argument to be made that what's going on with the commanders has more of an impact on the Texans than the DW4's saga. That up there may have just secured Easterby's job here with us for the foreseeable future. What's going on up there may have just created a lane within all NFL front offices for others like Jack Easterby as character coaches / head snitch.
LMAO, you really believe this.

After reading Sue's entire decision, it's quite clear that she is unhappy that the CBA makes no effort to define any of the prohibited conduct. Something they might want to clean up, especially if they plan on keeping Judge Robinson around:

What? Unjust penalties after the fact?

She's looking for a way to let him off the hook.

its the inconvenient truth you and others just dont want to hear is all. If Robinson recommends suspending him for a year she’s your hero….but b/c she doesn’t you default to your typical conspiracy theories.
