Bowe and Carriker hot, Palko and McCauley not


SI.com lists it's risers and sliders after two days of the Senior Bowl.

Risers of note include Adam Carriker and Dwayne Bowe.

Carriker impressed right out of the gate during the weigh-ins, measuring up at 6'6" 290 with an impressive build and huge reach. During practice he's been the top player on the field and impossible to stop. He has a great combination of power and speed.

Bowe also awed during weigh-ins. Looking more like a linebacker then a receiver at 6'2" 220. He's shown great speed and soft hands during practice.

Sliders of note include Marcus McCauley and Tyler Palko.

McCauley is following up a poor senior season with a poor Senior Bowl. He's getting beat deep and underneath. Despite his remarkable phiysical tools, he needs to pick up his play or his stock will really suffer.

Palko just doesn't look like an NFL QB. He's undersized. His arm is weak and inaccurate.

Lions dining with Thomas, not looking at QBs


The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Detroit Lions team officials, including Matt Millen, took Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas to dinner Monday night.

Tuesday at the Senior Bowl offensive coordinator Mike Martz said the Lions needs were "everything, except for a quarterback."

This could be a smoke screen, but it looks like the Lions are satisfied with Kitna as their QB and will look to address other needs with the 2nd overall pick in the draft.

carriker has impressed, no shock there. i've been saying it all year long, the guy's been double-teamed like crazy and offenses have actually gameplanned their scheme around him. that's absurd. he's a beast.
 
Troy Smith, tOSU - over the top delivery makes him taller, consistent over the top delivery even on run, beautiful easily catchable arcing deep ball, good zip on short passes, confident decisive reads, command/leadership at line of scrimmage, built like RB but not stiff, mobile, keeps head downfield when scrambling, holds ball in good throwing position while scrambling, good pocket awareness, have not seen a batted pass in two days

Kevin Kolb, Houston - flutterballs and one INT, overthrew deep ball, underthrew swing pass, good mechanics, mobile, good footwork in 3,5,7 step drops pushing back from center, good timing

Jordan Palmer, UTEP - way too many flutterballs (although some were accurate), little zip on any passes, stationary QB, too many interceptions - caused not by trying to get ball into small window, or outstanding individual plays, but just not seeing defenders doing their job, no anticipation of defense, consistent in his inconsistency

Dwayne Bowe, LSU - fast, quick, agile, natural hands catcher, crisp routes, Boldin-esque frame, but faster, tipped possible INT away from Michael Griffin to himself making catch while falling on his back, got 7-8 yards separation easily on go route, but didn't make catch, lots of attention by teams after practice, best WR on field today, extremely coachable, SF WR said "way to be coachable" after Bowe instantly applied suggestion on next play (pat kirwan commented on this too), got low to catch ball just off ground very easily

Buster Davis, LB, Florida St - plays with mean streak, leapt well to deflect pass, stumbled over pad in drill, corrected by Singletary, but then had to stay upright to complete drill instead of getting low, suggest that he can't fire off ball, susceptible to getting run over while getting through trash, overachiever

No kidding. I've read reports from 4 different internet scouts, and Troy Smith, Drew Stanton, and Kevin Kolb have been mentioned as the best QB out there:

No problem though for Ohio State QB Troy Smith who may be under as much scrutiny as any player at this year’s Senior Bowl. Smith, though, emerged as at least the top QB so far in Mobile as he threw the ball with authority and also showed good leadership skills on the field.

Former Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton, who many believed would have been a first round pick had he left East Lansing after his junior season, might become one anyway.

Stanton is raising eyebrows and his profile after a solid day of practices in Mobile, AL., the site of the annual Senior Bowl. The solid efforts are big because Senior Bowl practices are run under the direction of coaching staffs from the NFL who have direct input into their team's draft day decisions.

While their have been conflicting reports, including one by Scout.com's Miller Safrit of theNFLexperts.com who is covering the practices for Scout.com, another report had Stanton outperforming rival Troy Smith due to Smith's elongated delivery.

One scout told reporters if Stanton keeps up his production, he could be the consensus third quarterback taken - presumably behind LSU's JaMarcus Russell and Notre Dame's Brady Quinn.

Stanton, by contrast according to the report, showed a compact delivery, quick release and good accuracy. Stanton was also visited on Tuesday by front office representatives of the Miami Dolphins.

Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb also looked crisp and polished, throwing tight spirals as well as some nice intermediate and deep routes. He had some difficulty throwing on the run but to say Kolb is playing better than any quarterback on either roster is not an overstatement.

That's not surprising. There are 32 teams and each has their own opinion on who is the #3 QB. Why should the internet scouts be any different?
 
Bowe looks like he's rounding out into the 3rd or 4th WR taken. With Bowe the most physical of this bunch, somebody is going to like him a lot. Other than CJ, I think he's most likely to have an immediate impact.

I think the key is to not look at the conflicting reports, but instead look at what the consensus opinion is from multiple sources. While reports have been giving differing grades to the QBs performances, almost every report I have seen has said that David Irons, Adam Carriker, Dwayne Bowe, Ryan Kalil, Brandon Meriweather, and Patrick Willis have consistantly stood out in practice so far. On the other hand, it appears that Tank Tyler, Marcus McCauley, and Mansfield Wrotto have proven to be the biggest disappointments through two days of practice.

Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State: Smith might be putting some teams' fears to rest after the BCS game. He has shown an NFL arm and a pretty good release. His 6'0 height is a concern, but it won't kill him come draft day. I think he is solidifying himself in the second round or early third at worst.

Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State: While "standout" might not be accurate, he did have a solid practice on Tuesday. McCauley is better in press coverage and might be a better cover 2 corner than man corner.

David Irons, CB, Auburn:Irons has shown good instincts and has done very well in one-on-one drills. He has shown good hips and a good break on the ball. The CB position is loaded with guys bunched together and Irons is helping himself quite a bit.

Aaron Ross, CB, Texas: Ross has caught everyone's attention with his ability to lock up in man-to-man and his physicality in press coverage. Scouts who have done their homework already know his toughness is one of his strengths and he is likely cementing his spot in the first round in Mobile.

i haven't heard a single positive thing said about meriweather. i've heard he's too frail, looks like a corner, plays at one speed and doesn't have the instincts you want from a safety.
 
Adrian Peterson in 1st and Troy Smith in the 2nd for the Texans? While I would like to upgrade our defense, if those two were available I think the Texans may have a hard time passing on them. There's still free agency though.

Carriker sounds like a poor man's Mario to me. Excellect size with impressive
athleticism, but not freaky athletic as Mario is.
I dunno though. Even if we could trade back and get him for less than one of the elite DEs in this Draft, don't think he's the other bookend for our DLine.
No where do I see him being exalted as an explosive, super quick edge rusher,
which is what I think they wanted but didn't get with Mario. We need that kind of player over on the weakside to give us the pass rusher we still need
so badly, and Carriker doesn't sound like he's that guy.

No. I want no part of Ross on our team. He sucked it up during the season and hasn't been good after it either. Young may not be a great passer, but Ross wouldn't do anything to take advantage of that. I am against Ross before the 5th.

Senior Bowl: Day Three Notes
Big day at the Senior Bowl as all the players have shaken off the rust and nerves. Today was the last day in pads, Thursday and Friday won't see nearly as much action. A lot of news to cover, so lets get started.

Denverbroncos.com reports David Clowney and Aaron Rouse made big plays all day. Clowney caught everything and Rouse had two interceptions. Also, in an interview Clowney claims he ran a 4.28 40 -yard dash.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Auburn cornerback David Irons has been one of the South team's best players this week. Also, more praise for Dwayne Bowe, "who was far and away the most impressive receiver Wednesday".

Mlive has a closer look at the linebackers reporting that David Harris is showing pretty well. He's calling the defensive sets and is always around the ball. He does a good job of taking on blockers and puts himself in position to make the tackle.

Buccaneers.com has a good piece on Tony Hunt's Senior Bowl performance, stating "The solidly-built, 220-pound back isn’t flashy, but he has been exactly as advertised – a North-South runner who runs with power and can dish out as much punishment as he receives. "

They also report that Daymeion Hughes sat out most of Wednesday’s session after his back tightened up and that Eric Weddle made a big impression by being in the middle of two turnovers during the scrimmage.

SI.com lists it's risers and sliders for day three. They note that Ken Darby had a great day, breaking off several long runs and was difficult to bring down.

Staley, Kalil, and Blaylock improve draft stock
NFL.com analyst Pat Kirwan details some offensive linemen making an impact during Senior Bowl week. He was especially impressed with Joe Staley, Justin Blalock, and Ryan Kalil.

Kirwan on Staley -
As I walked towards him he reminded me of a young Jon Runyan -- a big athlete with a nasty streak ... he will be a 10-year starter in this league. Staley's techniques are good and his competitive nature is better.

Blalock-
Blaylock isn't a bad tackle prospect but he's a terrific guard talent. He's tough with a road-grader style when he's inside...

Kalil-
He's not bulky at 290 pounds but his techniques and effort to finish are outstanding.

Saw some one-on-ones yesterday between the DLineman and OLineman,
and I was really impressed with Okoye. He's making fools out of the
Olineman he's going up against this week in the drills.
He's very compact and powerful with tremendous quickness.
Too athletic, too quick to play on the inside, gotta be on the edge to take
advantage of his pass rushing skills.
I dunno, but this kid might be the second-coming of Dwight Freeney ?
He looks like and plays alot like Freeney IMO.

Freeney ran a 4.48... Okoye is awesome... but expected to run a 5.1 or so. There will be no second coming of Freeney.
 
"Patrick Willis is being coached by Mike Singletary this week"

I'd think that Patrick Willis out of all the linebackers in the Senior bowl could soak up more coaching by Singletary.
