Seminole Post-Combine Mock

TexansSeminole

Hall of Fame
Round 1: Connor Cook, QB, MSU

Round 2: Le’Raven Clark, OT, Texas Tech

Round 3: Jeremy Cash, SS/Nickel LB, Duke

Round 4: Kenyan Drake, RB, Alabama

Round 5: Charon Peake, WR, Clemson

Round 5: Evan Boehm, C, Missouri

Round 6: Niles-Lawrence Stample, DT, FSU

Round 7: Terrance Smith, LB, FSU

Assuming Goff, Wentz, and Lynch are gone by 22 and we were unable to trade up.

I don't know if I could be ok with spending a 1st on Cook. Hope that's not our best option

I like it. Looks like a realistic mock and I like your late round picks. I'm not familiar with Peake but I like the rest of the picks. Definitely fills team holes with some good talent.

I'm not sure that Bob McNair would sign off on a SR QB who was not voted a Team Captain by his teammates.

We gave up one 7th to the Pats for Mallett and one to the Broncos for Clark

Ah yes, of course.

I tried to do a realistic mock here with Cook as the selection because I think it's likely we end up in that situation: Top 3 QBs gone and sitting at 22.

Clark isn't a guy that should be playing right away but I figure the tackle need is a long term need, possibly at both spots. We should look to add a player in FA.

A lot of people have Cash higher but he's not great playing deep, nor does he have elite speed, so I think he'll fall somewhat behind some other safeties and be available into the 3rd. He's great around the line of scrimmage on the edges. He's an excellent blitzer from the outside and generally would give us better coverage of anything short on the edges in our nickel and dime defense.

Drake is a nice weapon, he does a lot of what our backs aren't good at. Peake is a flyer on a player that was stuck lower on an excellent depth chart for much of his time in Clemson.

Last two picks look to add depth on OL and DL. Stample could play any position along the line.

I am pretty sure we have a 7th rounder from the Keenum trade.

Texans have...

1 (22)
2 (52)
3 (85)
4 (116)
5 (147)
5 (154; from NE)
6 (177; from NYJ)

We acquired the 5th from NE by swapping our 6th and giving up Keshawn Martin.
We acquired the 6th from NYJ from the Fitzpatrick deal.
We traded our 7th for Mallett.
We traded the 7th round Keenum pick to Denver for Chris Clark.

I understand your reasoning and applaud your draft, I just don't think I'd spend a first on Cook. I'd rather take my bpa, be it Elliott or Spriggs or other and get my QB in round 2, even if I had to move up and pay a premium to do it

I assumed 4 OTs (Tunsil, Spriggs, Stanley, and Conklin) were gone, Elliot too.

So you have 8 offensive players (more if any WR are taken) before us in a defense heavy draft? OK, but I don't see it

I actually have Treadwell going before us too.

That's the thing though, this draft only has a few skill position players with first round grades. Elliot is legit and Treadwell is legit, after that it's a lot murkier. I think teams will be happy to get those guys in the mid first round, maybe higher.

The defensive talent is deep into the 2nd round.

True dat but do you take the higher rated or the lesser available?

Both Elliot and Treadwell are rated as top 15 guys by most everyone. I feel pretty confident they will both be gone by 22.

All 3 of the top 4 tackles with the exception of Conklin are generally rated higher on people's big boards than 22 as well.

What about Decker and Coleman? Ryan Kelley and Whitehair have a first round grade on your board? Anyone but Cook :D

Cook is better than what we have.

With the exception of Goff and maybe Wentz, these QBs probably shouldn't be starting right away. We may be looking at a season in which Savage wins the QB battle. By year 2 under OB though, Cook would probably be the best QB option we've had in years. A later first round pick isn't a bad price to pay for that.

I don't want to draft a QB just because he's "better than what we have". You are probably better than what we have. I'm pretty sure Hou-Tex and Rico are... we'll just have to agree to disagree about Cooks value

I think Cook's value is much higher than the QBs that would be available after him in this scenario. He's a good prospect and maybe OB can be the guy to develop him. I think OB is actually a good QB coach, he got alot more out of the QBs he's had than I expected. He's just picked the wrong ones to sign. We should use the fact that we have a QB coach as a head coach and get him someone to mold and develop.

I trust OB as a QB coach as well but I'd rather take a guy with the tools I like and trust OB to coach him up on the mental stuff. I think Cook is fine on the mental stuff and the work he needs is with accuracy and ball placement. OB's track record in that area is not as good.

I do understand the pick that you made though. And I wouldn't hate it. I just don't think I would prefer it.

I see Cook as a younger slightly better version of Fitz.

If you want to be even less thrilled about Cook in the 1st, watch his Iowa and Michigan tape.

Which is weird because all through the Combine all Mayock was talking about (in regards to Cook) was watching the 2nd half of his Michigan tape is what sold him on Cook. Meanwhile I'm wondering what game he was watching. He hit a 30 yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter that was open by 10 yards after the UM CB fell for a double move. Then he hit a 70 yard wheel route to a FB who was open by 25 yards in the 4th quarter. That was it. Two busted coverages that he took advantage of.

Down 2 points with 7 minutes left he had 3 chances to win the game and couldn't get the job done. In that 4th quarter he completed 5/16 passes for 141 yards (64.8 QB Rating). Take away the blindingly wide open FB wheel and he was 4/15 for 67 yards (45.7 QB Rating). His QBR for the entire game was 38.

He got 4 first downs in 5 fourth quarter drives and MSU would have lost the game because of it if not for one of the flukiest blocked punts in football history.

The Iowa tape is equally poor. His pocket awareness in those games was poor. One of the reasons I like Lynch more and one of the reasons I think he's gone by 22 is his mobility and pocket awareness.

Cook played poorly at the end of the Michigan game but c'mon....

The "ESPN Play of the Year" would have meant nothing if Michigan had prevented MSU from scoring 21 points prior to it taking place.

Dantonio sent 10 to block the punt while Harbaugh only had 8 protecting him. Out coached on the final play of the game just like Gus Malzahn out coached Saban on the kick 6.

It being a rivalry game just made the play even sweeter.

I am souring on Cook. I hate that his attitude and demeanor to me come off really bad. Just grab Lynch or Hack with that Cook pick and I am on board.
