savage is way too green to be anyone's savior. He needs
a full offseason (like Case got) to actually understand what is
going on.

Thanks for that info on Savage PO, he really got popped when he took that safety, and I noticed as the camera followed him on the SL after the play that he was acting pretty goofey. I'm relieved he's OK.
Yea I wish we could have seen more of him, but in just the couple short passes he threw you could see the spin and velocity on the balls that was different than what the other 2 QBs were throwing.
Not to be an apologist, but that blitz got in there fast. He couldn't just throw it away, that would've been a safety as well. His only option was to throw it to a receiver and that could've easily ended up as a pick 6 (and he had practically no time to scan the field). The only thing you could really fault him for was not adjusting the protection, but that would be a lot to ask of a rookie. So overall I think all of our QBs and probably around 80% of all QBs in the league would've taken that safety.
But I agree with you an him needing a season. He needs to learn the system, getting faster through his reads and adjust to the speed of the game. He has all the tools but much to learn. I could see us throwing him in the fire sometime this season just to find out, if there is enough promise not to take a QB with our first pick next draft.

Same here. I had very high hopes and perhaps carried them too long. Right now he looks like the guy who understands what he's supposed to do but can't seem to execute consistently. He looks like the game never completely slowed down for him.

Make it three. I doesn't change anything about my attitude for the guy. I'm a Coog and what he did with UH was awesome and never be forgotten. But this is the Texans and their well-being and is I where my heart is. He is an ex-Coog, and that doesn't mean anything here.
If Keenum gets cut Tuesday I'll thank him for his hard work and wish him luck as he puts Gabbert out of work in Santa Clara,...... um, San Francisco.
Coach gave him the rope he needed and Savage whacked the horse. I am curious if Savage was in the doghouse or something after all the time Keenum got.
Anyway, I couldn't be happier for Savage and I think he has a lot of upside. Maybe even upside Houston hasn't fully realized yet.

Of course and I don't mean to sound like I'm suggesting any different. It's just that from week one I've seen Fitz be.... well, "Fitz". Case has looked like Fitz after a shave wearing #7 at times and it just seems like every week there's a "WTF?" moment from him. Tonight in his second series (if I'm remember that correctly) there he was running backwards 20-25 yards it seemed like before throwing the ball away. He's one slip away from giving up a huge sack again. I just can't ignore that. When the line lets the blitz jump him in less than 2 seconds I'm not putting all of that on Case. When a receiver drops a pass that hits him in the hands I'm in Case's corner. I'm consistently supportive of him but I see no progress. Case does a lot of the same things he's always done.
Savage has gone from "lost puppy" to at least appearing to know what he's doing. That's forward progress. The other two, though they've mostly been better than Savage (and better against better opposition) have stood still for the most part. I'm just giving Savage props for getting better. I still want to see more. Next week should be fun.

If JFF led his team to a final minute come from behind win on the road against the AFC Champions the media would be doing special breaking news reports. Even if it was against the 3rd string. The only news about the Texans game is Welker's concussion (he ducked his head into Swag's shoulder). Savage's play isn't noteworthy on a national level. I think he deserves the start against SF. Let him play with a better group and see what he can do.
The big question is going to be during the regular season. At what point in the season do the Texans have to give him the ball? At the break if we're 3-6? What if we're 6-3 and in the hunt? Fitz isn't a long term answer and shouldn't be starting next year. If they don't get a good look at Savage during this season it'll be hard to figure out where to go next May during the draft.
All in all, though. That one drive from Savage was the best any of the 3 QBs has looked in a single drive. He was poised and confident. He made smart reads and good throws. The one incompletion was still on target. Open up the book a little bit and see what he can do on Thursday.

Regardless of how Savage looks this year, I believe we add another QB next year.
If we're in the playoff hunt and Fitz has been decent, he stays the starter ala Alex Smith and Kaep scenario from a few years ago.
I really like Keenum but he can't read a defense fast enough, make decisions fast enough, and I just don't think he really grasps this O'Brien offense. I'm not saying Savage is the answer, he obviously has a long ways to go before he's considered an NFL starter, but he's at least headed in the right direction and has potential. I wish Keenum all the best but will not be surprised if we grab a QB from the waiver wire when the final roster cuts are made.

Since the Draft, I've been saying that I think The Plan (tm) is for Savage to take the reins from Fitzpatrick early on in the season. I think Fitz starts the season but I think he's going to have a very short leash IF Savage can beat out Keenum for the QB2 spot.
And I think Savage could beat out Keenum from that QB2 spot. He hasn't, yet, but I think he still has a chance.

This is a rebuilding year so I am all for developing our potential future QB any way we can. But I think right now that means sitting him on the bench. He needs time to learn the playbook and get used to the speed of the game. He played against third stringers, that's a lot closer to college speed than it is against starters. But still, he looked impressive, most of all because of how he kept his cool.
We all knew he had all the tools and a cannon of an arm. If BoB can teach him the mental aspects and how to get through his reads faster (in that drive he basically always threw to his first read) then he can be special. But it would still be a long shot.
I expect him to maybe get in to start the last 5 games or so - when the season is basically over for us. Those games will be his showcase - if he really impresses, myaber we don't take a QB first overall. If there are questionmarks left, I bet we go QB.

Add me to those in agreement. Keenum when pressured can only throw the ball away or dump it off for 2-5 yards. Though I have a degree from U.H., facts must be faced. Savage isn't ready, but he's coming along, and he has the upside potential that K. lacks.

Savage needs time but he has real potential. He moved around a lot in college and never really got to settle down and get coached up in a system to have any kind of real body of work to look at. O'Brien saw a good arm and some potential and drafted him. The Texans just need a good camp cut to bridge the gap to Savage being on the field in a real game. Fitz is just plain bad and all the intelligence in the world doesn't make him a good qb. We have seen his best days as a qb and they weren't very good. Savage isn't ready for prime time yet and Fitz is never going to be ready for it.

I think the team is pulling for Savage to take the job, never seen a team so happy to get the go ahead score in preseason before. O'brien was fired up, saw him screaming good things in Savages ear.

As I was "advised" after the first P/S game, don't despair because of one bad showing. I'll take that advice and apply it to this game.
On the plus side, Savage looked good during that game-winning drive, yeah, I said it, "game-winning". He looked decisive. He was accurate - even the one that was broken up was on target - and deep (YAAAAY!!)
He definitely has the strongest arm of the three.
But - and here's where the caution comes in - it was against 2's and 3's. And it was only that one drive.
And if they blitzed him, I couldn't tell it. Either they didn't or O'Brien called quick hitters so he got rid of the ball quickly enough where it didn't affect him.
All that to say, color me intrigued; I want to see more. I suspect he'll get to play an entire half next week. So we'll all see if he can sustain that two minute performance.

Savage already made the team, it's Keenum who needed to prove himself and Billy gave him that opportunity in Denver Saturday night and Keenums performance was clearly underwhelming.
I think that enthusiasm was more to beat the guys they'd been scrimmaging against all week than for Savage in particular. Not that they weren't excited about Savage's performance.
Who knows what OB told Case. For all we know he told him to play within the system, don't do anything flashy & throw it away if he gets in trouble instead of "making things happen". OB may have seen exactly what he wanted out of Case to prove he's got what OB is looking for. That's what makes preseason games difficult to evaluate. Winning is not the primary goal & we rarely k of what is.
My disappointment in Keenum was his inaccuracy last night. Few of his passes were on target. I mean there was one quick throw - the two-step drop type - to a WR screen and Keenum threw it at his feet... ...from maybe 10 yds away. And I can't remember seeing Keenum throw someone open.
Maybe last night was just an off night; it happens. But Keenum looked plain sad.
Yeah, I was also disappointed at that. He threw 4 balls that could easily be intercepted and one that definetly should've been intercepted. Overall he just didn't look comfortable tonight. After 2 years in the league and starting 8 games, he should've looked better. I feel like he sealed his fate as a backup in the league, at least until the guy in front of him gets hurt and he can show what he can do again. I think for us it's Fitzpatrick and Savage...
I'm watching it again right now. His first drive was 11 plays for 74 yards, took 9 minutes off the clock. Some nice throws, some not so nice throws... Some help from the run game, no YAC that I can think of. Only problem with this drive is there wasn't a lot of flash... he stayed in the pocket went through his progression. .. boring stuff, but the stuff QBs do.
In the red zone he didn't take a shot into the end zone. But other than that, not a lot to complain about. This is what I want to see from Case, playing in the system. .. proving he gets it. All that ablibing stuff... flashy, but not the kind of thing you can plan around unless you're in a one read system.

Not that anyone is counting it seems, but it was an 18 play drive, not 11.
And Case did keep the offense on the field for over 13 minutes of the 3rd quarter. But only 3 points to show for it so there's that.

Sorry, but I just don't think Billy saw what he wanted out of Keenum to be convinced that Keenums his guy. No matter how you cut it, I don't think Case had a very good night (while I do think he was more impressive last week against ATL). But I do agree that preseason games are tough to evaluate. For example, I was listening to a local radio show this past week leading up to the Denver game, and they had a guest who was a sports-talk guy in Denver, and he was talking about the Broncos game the week before when they thumped the 49ers 34-0.
So the Denver guy said the 49ers had no interest in winning that game and gave an example of what he meant by how the 49ers repeatedly threw passes at receivers covered by stud veteran Broncos corner Aqib Talib instead of to receivers on the other side being covered by a rookie where the receptions would have been much easier. His explanation: for whatever reason the 49ers were just testing Tilib ? I dunno, but maybe the fact that the 49ers have a regular season game with Denver later this year was the motive.
Still, it was just the one drive.
Can he sustain that level of accuracy, calm, decision making over a half?
