Chiefs | Saunders interviews with Chiefs
Mon, 2 Jan 2006 20:35:15 -0800

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders was interviewed for several hours by the Chiefs Monday, Jan. 2. Saunders is scheduled to meet with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and with the Houston Texans on Thursday, Jan. 4. The Detroit Lions are also planning on formally requesting permission from the Chiefs to interview Saunders.

I also heard that the teams most interested in Kubiak are the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs.. no mention of the Texans.

Also.. a friend of mine was telling me that Jimmy Johnson made it clear on TV that the next coach of the Texans was going to have a big say in who gets drafted.. implying that the next coach may also be acting GM, or co-GM. Which makes a coach like Dan Reeves or Jimmy Johnson himself seem like probable scenarios.

This is all rumor... just thought id mention it here.

On nfl network adam Schafter(sp) claims that Kubiak is the big leader for the Texans. He did qualify that by saying that Kubiak did not impress McNair that much a few years ago when he interviewed with for the job. Of course, this is multi-handed information most of the time when he reports it.

That stuff about Kubiak not being well prepared for interviews has been out there before and I'm not sure what to make of it. He's the same guy now that he was then but everyone around the league, including Shanahan, and Denver media thinks he would make a great head coach. But McN wants head coaching experience which Gary doesn't have.

When you have one guy come in for an interview and he shows you his daily/weekly/yearly schedules broken down by the hour, his offensive and defensive playbooks, and other things that demonstrate great organization skills (which apparently got high marks from CC and McN) compared to a guy who didn't have all that - not sure what Gary brought in but I guess it wasn't much - then I guess you'd go with the apparent substance. You saw how far little notebooks got us in 4 years.

Kubiak was mentioned by McNair right after the news conference as a possible new HC and will be interviewing for the job. As far as Dan Reeves, McNair also said that Reeves will only be an consultant on the new hire for HC and will not interview for the HC postion.
