Salary Cap Staus

There are going to be some decisions made before the start of the 2006 season.

Eric Brown $2.9 - Not starting anymore.
Jay Foreman $3.1 - Might have lost his spot too.
Aaron Glenn $5.4 - better corners are cut with similar contracts.
Steve McKinney $4.6 - Can have more time to do the Inside Skinny with...
Gary Walker - $4.8 - Losing steps fast. Will be out by 2006.

Depending on how and where the draft goes this year and the list of potential draftees next year I wouldn't be surprised if some or all of the players either renegotiate or become victims to the salary cap axman.

You have to consider that Carr, DD, Wong, Peek, Pitts, and Sharper are all free agents after this next season. I don't know if they are UFA or RFA. I'm sure someone does, though. These players are more important to the long term success than the ones listed above.

is Keith also known as aj?

and wow.. we are 15 million under the cap? neato... Lamont Jordan!!!!!

Thats not very much when you consider about $5million is going to be for the rookies, another 5-6 to re-sign some of our players, that leaves about $5 million for Free Agency. That's not a lot fellas.

I certainly hope that we don't spend $5million to resign players. I wouldn't want Payne for more than $2 million per year... and, other than a few tenders to our RFAs, I don't want anyone else over the Vet. minimum... I would like to see continued fiscal responsibility and possibly no major FA signings. Instead, I'd like to see us $5-$8 million under the cap. Then, I'd like that room used to restructure contracts. We could front end some of the bigger contracts like Sharper and Carr in order to save some money in the coming years. That is the strategy that Phillie used so successfully in order to sign McNabb to a huge contract and also to make room for T.O.

Well I think the vet minimum will be $656K next year. You've got theses guys as FA's:

Jason Anderson RB ERFA
JJ Moses WR ERFA
Bryan Pittman LS ERFA
Jarrod Baxter RB RFA
Milford Brown OG RFA
Troy Evans LB RFA
Demarcus Faggins CB RFA
Matt Murphy TE RFA
Jonathan Wells RB RFA
Tony Banks QB UFA
Jason Bell CB UFA
Marcus Bell LB UFA
Corey Bradford WR UFA
Junior Ioane DT UFA
Marlon McCree FS UFA
Moran Norris FB UFA
Seth Payne DT UFA
DaShon Polk LB UFA
Corey Sears DE UFA
Jason Simmons CB UFA
Marcus Spears OT UFA
Kenny Wright CB UFA

Obviously, the Texans won't tender all of these guys. But, I can see the Texans wanting to bring back at least 8-10 of these guys, that's $5-$6 million right there. And like you said, Payne will want more than the minimum (as will Banks & Faggins).

Sharper is in the last year of his contract. So unless he signs an extension, there's no possibility of "front loading" his contract. Carr's getting a big roster bonus soon ($5 million?). If the Texans dump McKinney, Wiegart, Eric Brown, & Jay Foreman before the '06 season they'll be in great cap shape.

It varies by experience. Here are the numbers for 2004--I think they went up about $5k between 2003-2004 so these should be close for 2005.

Rookies $230,000
Second-year players $305,000
Third-year $380,000
Fourth- through sixth-year $455,000
Seventh- through ninth-year $660,000
10 or more years $760,000

There is also a cap exception for 10+ year vets--if they are signed to a one year contract then they get paid according to the chart above but only count on the cap as a 4th-6th player.

Right. Here are the '05 numbers from the CBA extension for '05:

Rookies - $230K
Players with 1 credited season - $305K
Players with 2 credited seasons - $380K
Players with 3 credited seasons - $455K
4-6 credited seasons - $540K
7-9 credited seasons - $665K
10+ credited seasons - $765K

If I read this correctly, only $455K will count against the cap for the players with 4 seasons or higher experience.

Minimum Salary Benefits

Operation of Benefit

We are implementing a new system to make it less costly to retain older veterans at the minimum salary. Under this new system, the Salary Cap count for a player with four or more Credited Seasons who signs a qualifying contract (collectively, "qualifying players") will be the same as the count for a player with 3 Credited Seasons.

The difference between the Salary Cap count for a qualifying contract and the stated minimum for the qualifying player's years of service will be counted as a Player Benefit. For example, in the 2002 League Year, a qualifying player with 5 Credited Seasons will receive a Minimum Salary of $525,000; however, only $450,000 will count against his club's Team Salary. The difference of $75,000 will be counted as a Player Benefit and be paid out of the League-wide benefit pool. Similarly, a qualifying player with 12 Credited Seasons will receive a Minimum Salary of $750,000; however, only $450,000 will count against his club's Team Salary. The difference of $300,000 will be counted as a Player Benefit and be paid out of the League-wide benefit pool. As a result, the 10-year veteran making $750,000 will cost the club the same as the three-year veteran making $450,000.

RFAs already count against the cap, I believe... Of the UFAs, I wouldn't want more than 2 or 3 of those- and only for near the minimum... Regarding Sharper, they could resign him for, say, 4 years and 18 million- give him a good bonus and configure the contract so that this year (the first of four) is a high cap number, therefore reducing the cap costs for the next three seasons.

If they've been tendered, yes. But looking at Keith's capsheet, he hasn't taken those numbers into account as of yet.

Really? Can you name any?

Ty Law was just cut but he was going to count $12.5 mil on the Patriots cap.

Remember, only the highest 51 cap values count against the teams cap this time of year, so it's confusing how to represent player values. For example, when a FA is signed, it could 'bump' a RFA tendered player out of the top 51. On one hand, you want to put a cap value beside each player ... on the other, only the highest 51 count against the cap.

Last year the minimum RFA tender was 628k and those salaries were in the 28th-32nd highest cap figure range on the Texans roster (guys like Moran Norris, Derrick Vaughn, McCree, etc.). The guys in the 50-51 salary range are the ERFAs and other FAs signed to minimum deals (last year) in the 380k area. If your 51st highest salary is a RFA, my guess would be you're wayyyy over the cap (actually, I don't think it would be even possible...)

Thank you for the correction/clarification. I guess I was trying to point out that one one hand, cap numbers will be listed for about 90 odd players, but you can't just add them to calculate a teams cap.

The Texans are tied (w/CLE) for 10th on the slary cap status. $8.9mil under the new 2005 $85.5mil salary cap.

This is as of today, March 4.

Of course MIN is #1 with $31mil!

Buffalo, Oak & TB are the 3 worst: $652k, $790k & $700k, respectfully.

How are these teams going to pay their draft picks?
IMO there are almost always guys at the end of the bench that can be cut if the draft pick looks better. Like the Texans' Matt Murphy, Quincy Monk, DD Acholonu or even Eric Brown. Not saying it will happen just possible.

How are the Bucs $700k under and still so bad, I thought that they had one of the best GMs in the business?

they dont have a deifnant QB, I dont see how Johnson came off such a good season with them 2 years ago and did absoultely horrible last year

WBB, how is it that John Clayton "begs to differ"?? That is the site that I got the numbers from...so I assume he or I agree?

That order is in alphabetical order, not ranking. So I do not see what you are saying about JC.

Mehhhhh, I read your original post wrong. I originally thought it said 2nd, tied with Cleveland...bah.

The Bucs arent really a bad team.. they are actually pretty good when they play to their potential. they are just undisciplined.

sorry.. bit off topic

Howdy ya'll, been awhile.

Just curious, it is probably in another thread but this one was near the top, what is Carr's cap # this year? Thanks in advance.

I think it's around 7 million.

can anyone tell me the cap numbers for some of our older players along with signing bonuses. i would like to know how much these players make but also how much they would cost us if we released them. the older players or the ones i am most interested in. although i would like to see all players if possible. i am most interested in g. walker, glenn, sharper, and the three older offensive line players.

i saw the link at the top but that does not give all the info that i want. i also need signing bonuses and to see the entire contract not just the next 2 years.

Thanks, but I think it is 8.6 mil minimum. I believe his base salary this year is 5.5 mil and his SB is 3.1 mil. I just don't know if he is due any other bonuses (such as roster bonus) that would count against the cap. If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help you with SB or other bonuses, but base salaries can be found at www.NFLPA.org

OK, I guess I overestimated the SB. 11 mill over 7 yrs is more like 1.6, so you were right with the 7.1. Now if anyone knows about any other bonuses I would love to hear it.

Why bring Banks back when Ragone is playing like a mad man in Europe?

When the sam hill did he do that?? They haven't even arrived in Europe yet or started league play. They are practicing in Florida and, yes, he seems to be doing well in practice.

Thought maybe he was talking about Banks

I agree that I don't know that we needed Banks but I disagree with going for the high draft pick. I don't think the fan support will give the team another year of sub-500 play, especially if it's due to the offense.

Competition breeds excellence, so if Carr or more specifically Ragone feel threatened by him, they may play at a higher level because of his presence...

Profootball talk.com says we are $3.8 mil under the cap as of today. Is this correct? I am not really familiar with their site.

LINK

If McKinney is really counting $3,850,000 towards the cap, he needs to be cut. He's not worth nearly that much money. The team can in all likelihood find a better center in the 3rd round of the draft for relative chump change. At that salary, McKinney is the fourth highest paid player on the team, now that Sharper is gone.

Unbelievable! :shocked

If that number is correct, the Texans have converted some signing bonus money into roster bonus to suck it up now and make more room available later.

This is as of April 1st, which is the day we cut Sharper...I don't think that the Sharper cut is represented in Clayton's report...

atleast we look better than the raiders 57,000 dollars. Any money left for rookies LOL. Yeah and didnt sharper free up alot more space than his projections showed ???

I thought when we signed Davis Carr, we signed him for 7 years... Can some1 verify this info?

Carr's contract has a built in option after the fourth year (this year) where the Texans can extend him two or three more years to make it a six or seven year deal. The terms of the option/extension are already set from the initial negotiations of his deal. If the Texans choose the two year option, he would get a $5.5 million bonus prior to the '06 season and carry base salaries of $5 million and $5.25 million in '06 and '07. If the Texans choose the three year option, Carr would get a bonus of $8 million and base salaries of $5.25 million in '06 and '07, and $6 million in '08. Or they could choose not to extend him at all after 2005 but that probably won't happen. He is now getting paid like a top ten QB so it's time for him to become a top ten QB.

DD and Peek will be eligible for RFA if not extended prior to March 1.

Pitts and Wong will be eligible for UFA if not extended prior to March 1.

Sharper was released a few weeks ago and is now a Seahawk.
