Will be shopping the market. Wouldn't be surprised if he were not resigned by Rams for a more reasonable price.

Rams release safety O.J. Atogwe
By Arin Karimian, USA TODAY

An $8 million roster bonus was deemed too much for the Rams to pay in order to keep safety O.J. Atogwe.

St. Louis opted to release the safety on Friday rather than pay the bonus due to him on Feb. 21. The Rams, who had placed the franchise tag on Atogwe in the past, signed the 29-year-old to a five-year, $32 million deal last June.

Atogwe is engaged to the daughter of Hall of Fame Bears linebacker and ex-49ers coach Mike Singletary. The six-year pro out of Stanford can negotiate and sign with any team.

Hmmm, the writer makes it seem like the 49ers or Vikings is the place to go...maybe not? Solid player but certainly not elite IMO.

The Texans need to get this guy. He would probably be one of, if not the best secondary player we've ever had...

If you are not getting Nmadi A or Champ B, then you need to get OJ Atogwe and make legitimate steps to getting that secondary to the level of proper NFL competence..

I would rather Atogwe than Bailey or Asomaghu just because of how terrible our safety play has been.

I think even those elite CB will look bad at times with the terrible safety play we have.

Agreed. I'm not sure Atogwe is the answer, but we should most certainly be in the list of teams talking to the guy. Even better news is that Atogwe has stated that he isn't in a rush to find a new home. This gives the Texans time to explore their options in the draft and then pursue Atogwe after the fact.

Theres a distinction between Atogwe/Sanders and the other free agent safeties. They can be signed before the draft.

If we can close one area of need before the draft we can focus on the other positions. And Atogwe is a tremendus leap in talent from what we have.

How long must this franchise be haunted by the ghost of Matt freaking Stevens?

Atogwe.

do it.

now.

I'm afraid that the only list the Texans will have him on will be on the list of players they TALK ABOUT.:wadepalm:

i always know what move we wont make because its the move which makes the most sense. Dont tell me Shaun Rodgers is to big so he doesnt fit your system. He's an upgrade at a position of need. Atogwe is the same way...

and thats why we wont do it.

Rick Smith and Kubiak will continue to be passive and overrate their teams current talent.

This is your chance...

and its passing you by...

this is the handwriting on the wall...

For those that were up in arms over not bringing Rogers in, this one should have y'all picketing on Kirby.

Redskins agreed to terms with FS O.J. Atogwe on a five-year, $26 million contract.
Among NFL defensive backs, Atogwe's 44 turnovers accounted for rank third in the league over the past five seasons, and second in the NFC. (Only Ed Reed and Charles Woodson have more.) Also familiar with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett's system from their time together in St. Louis, the 30-year-old Atogwe will fit in nicely in D.C. He'll play free safety, with LaRon Landry manning the strong side and continuing to focus on "the box."

5 year contract is kinda long for a 30 year old. However, DBs with skills have been productive much longer. He would have been a perfect fit here, which is why, of course, we didn't even look at him.

Kubiak seems to place zero importance on safety play

Even if we had been interested I would consider it an extreme long shot that we offer him a 5 year deal.

We never had a chance on this one.

If we weren't busy signing our own guys today, I would be a bit more upset. We signed some pretty key guys from our own club today so it says we are doing something. Just hate that we didn't get a visit.
