Ryan Mallett

Based on salary cap, draft position, other needs and Fitz's overall performance, I would be OK with them cutting Fitz (saves a few $), keep Mallet, Keenum and Savage and if Petty is available in a round when we don't have a glaring need (other than QB), draft him. IMHO, Fitz is not the answer as a starter - defense has to carry him and cover for his mistakes. Same thing has been said of Keenum, so keep the less expensive QB. Take the remaining 3 QB's to camp and let the coaches sort it out.

Mallet will probably win the #1 spot. Keenum-Savage-and Draft Choice can battle it out for the #2 & #3 QB positions.

I'll just say it...

Dude's going to be 27 by next season. He's been a career backup in the NFL and has very few snaps under his belt. I don't think he's a hidden gem. He's a back-up for a reason, and he's going to continue to be a career backup QB. I'm just not as excited about him as some are on this board.

I don't want to throw rumors out there, but I have heard from many students at Arkansas that he wasn't exactly the brightest guy in the world. He has the intangibles, the arm strength...he just can't get on the field because he lacks the ability to read defenses/understand the offense.

How many students at Arkansas do you know, and how many of them know Mallett?
And seriously, you're holding against him because he couldn't take the starting job of the greatest QB in NFL history? LOL

I know one thing, I believe what my eyes tell me, and my eyes tell me that Mallet has a fantastic knowledge of this offense, and the leadership abilities to run it.

I'll go out on the limb as someone requested earlier and say that I am not only predicting Mallett to be our starting QB in game one, but I am fully on board and support the Texans if they make that decision.
Call me crazy, but I'm ready to roll with Mallett in 2015.

*disclaimer* I don't exactly have a sterling record of evaluating QB talent, so my opinion on QBs should be taken with a grain of salt. That not notwithstanding, I'll be happy with RM as our starter.

All I know is this, the offense ran like a machine during that Cleveland game. He knew exactly what he was doing on every play.

Straight up, man. He came in prepared and ready to play. That says a lot about his mentality when we see other QBs get their chance and fail miserably for a variety of reasons.

And add to the above game performance the fact that our head coach was part of evaluating and drafting Mallett, and got to work with him in a full off-season, OTA workouts, training camp, pre-season, and regular season.

Then, Mallett got to study this exact same offensive scheme for three seasons with a HoF QB who is still in his prime today. Mallett was able to absorb how to workout, prepare, study film, and prepare with a HoF QB and HoF HC on a daily basis.

Then add another year in this offense reunited with O'Brien...I guess I just don't see the reason to be pessimistic about the guy at this point. Anyone they bring in here will most likely be "unproven", but is that a good reason to be pessimistic? I guess if you want to be Eeyore with a black cloud over your perception, but for me, I'm about as excited on potential and promise as I've been in many, many years.

Put me in that camp!:goodpost:

even better when you can fill a prime position with (hopefully) a decent contract without using a draft pick. Same to be said with Kendrick Lewis and Pickett; all 3 starters.

Bring the Mallet!

The Patriots rated Mallett as the best quarterback available in the 2011 draft; nevertheless, six other quarterbacks were taken before the Patriots drafted him.

The Patriots had Mallet ranked as #1 QB in the draft class, but of course they had no real QB need. As the draft progressed NE ended up with two back-to-back third round picks (3rd Round #9 & #10) and I'm sure were fairly shocked that Mallet had fallen that far. They selected their second RB of the draft, and went BPA with the next pick choosing Mallet anyways.

Now the Patriot's didn't get any bang for their buck, as Tom Brady remained remarkably healthy during Mallet's stay. They didn't get to rely on their backup QB, NOR did Mallet get to raise up his trade value by performing well as a temporary starter...aka Matt Flynn. But as to Double Barrell's post, the Patriot's did all the hard work for us already, so umm thanks Bill Belichick--hope you enjoy that 7th rounder in the 2016 draft.

As mentioned, when Ryan got his first start against the Browns he didn't look at all like a nervous rookie in his first time NFL start. Frankly, OB didn't give him a rookie gameplan either. How often does a rookie go into his first game, with a lightening quick no-huddle offense as a gameplan. I was impressed with his control of the offense, quick checks, and nice pass selection. I think my favorite part of that start was hearing afterwords that Ryan Mallet was checking into run plays as well helping the team get over 200yds rushing.

I think it's a 99% chance that Ryan will resign with us, and I'm definitely looking forward to his starting QB performance in 2016. I think he still has some development to do, but only time on the field will provide the opportunity for him to improve.

Belichick will probably find the next Tom Brady with that pick!

10. TEXANS SOURCE: (1/2) Called Ryan Mallett a "consummate professional," team desperately wants him back and are near-positive it happens.

Mallett is likely to be the guy here next year, unless a serious bidding war starts for Foles. It is a bad year for QB's in FA, and in the draft. Mallett likely is their best option.

No kidding. Josh McCown is the cream of the crop til FA starts. Talk about depressing.

I'm all about resigning Mallett. I think he's got what it takes to be a quality starter in this league. At least as good as Schaub, but with a laser rocket arm.

Well I don't really know what he has, until I see him in a number of games especially to where teams have had a chance to watch him on film and game plan against him. I like his skill set and the fact that he knew the offense before coming here and learned it more last season is a big plus. He is familiar with the players on offense and has a chemistry unlike the rest of the QB's we'd be taking a look at as well. Mallett simply is the best guy to roll the dice on for this off season. If Foles comes up though, I want us to be all in.

I'm not sold on Foles, but do think he's be an awesome upgrade over Fitz. He wouldn't come cheap. I'd maintain faith in Mallett mainly because of his knowledge of the system.

Yep, this is where I'm at with Mallett too. If he somehow ends up on another team, Rick Smith should just go ahead and resign. As far as Foles goes, I'm on the fence to be honest. For me, Mallet>Foles, Foles>Fitzpatrick, Fitzpatrick>Savage/Keenum, Savage/Keenum>nothing.

I was dead set against trading for Mallett, but after watching the Cleveland and Cinci games, several times each, I say make him an offer he'll accept. I'll become a fan of a different team if they pay him upper tier money for 5 yrs. but I'll be more than happy with a reasonable "prove it" contract. There is definitely a point where I'd walk away from the table.

I was happily ridin' shotgun with ya until that last sentence. I think I'd do my damnest to get Mallet signed.

If Mallet ends up elsewhere and we and land Foles, I think Foles would be behind Fitz, Keenum, and Savage in an open competition because he doesn't know the offense like those guys do.

I figured I might be the only person to think this.

You'd stop being a Texans fan not because they didn't get the right guy, but because they got the right guy at a price you didn't like?

Will Ryan Mallett hit the market?

Yesterday, Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Bill O'Brien made clear their hope that Mallett returns to the Texans next season. That public push was matched internally. The buzz here in Indianapolis is the Texans could reach a deal with Mallett well before teams can start having conversations with other teams' free agents on March 7.

Have negotiations with Mallet started?

February 23, 2015

@taniaganguli:
Yes they have. The conversations started last week at the combine and could reach a conclusion soon.

An X factor that I mentioned last week will be the external market. There are a handful of quarterback-needy teams that would be interested in Ryan Mallett if he hit the market. General manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O'Brien were very open about the Texans desire to keep Mallett in the fold after a hopeful performance last season.

I keep using the word "hopeful" about Mallett because I think he showed a lot of positive signs, but it's impossible to make definitive conclusions based on one game in which he was mostly healthy and one game he played with a torn right pectoral muscle. That's an injury that keeps a player from finishing his throws and was the reason his passes were sailing when the Texans lost to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The hope he provided and the soft quarterback free agent market add up to Mallett being a priority for the Texans. He has said publicly that he wants to remain in Houston, and the Texans have made clear they want that, too.

I reckon he might get a feel for who might want him and for how much $ during the three day "legal tampering" period. He'd compare those numbers to what we're offering and make a decision soon thereafter. That's what I'd do anyway....which isn't saying much

Ryan Mallett Developed the Right Way
With the way the NFL is trending over the past decade, the quarterback position is being watered down by the spread offenses in the college game. Mallett is a dying breed of quarterback in this day and age because he learned the position and the game by watching how it is done.

The last quarterback to actually sit for more than two seasons was Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay behind Brett Favre. We are not saying Mallett will be Rodgers, but there is something to be said for paying your dues, so to speak.

Mallett sat, went to practice, learned, studied the offense and how it relates to the defense, and what it takes to make it happen at a high level by watching Tom Brady. With teams wanting instant returns right away, quarterbacks are rushed and are thrust into sink or swim situations. Not every team has an Andrew Luck that is the exception to the rule, but it has become a league-wide epidemic where quarterbacks make splashes early in their career only to have NFL defenses catch up to their game.

What Mallett can be is still in question, but there is some comfort in sinking money into him because of how he has been trained for this opportunity.

Such a community driven guy!

Is it common for players who are UFA's to be doing community outreach for teams?

Dude will be our starting QB next season. Just have be patient about the process, but I have no doubt about it.

And IMO, he's going to be the QB we need for this team.

I must say, he seems to be a completely different person than he used to be. IMO, he was a whiny peckerhead in college. I despised watching him play. Props to him for getting right

Ryan Mallett wants to remain in Houston

Texans coach Bill O’Brien wants soon-to-be free agent quarterback Ryan Mallett to remain in Houston. The feeling is mutual.

Mallett told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle that he’s hoping he’ll come to terms with the Texans on a new deal that keeps him in Houston, where he started two games last season before suffering a torn pectoral muscle.

“I’d like to be back. Hopefully, we can get something worked out,” Mallett said. “It’s nice to be wanted. It’s better than not being wanted.”

Mallett said he has started throwing a football as part of his rehab from surgery.

“I’ve tossed it around a little. Its a day by day process,” Mallett said. “I’m getting close. There’s no magic potion. I’m trying to get better every day. We’ll see how it goes.”

Mallett hasn’t done enough yet to prove that he’s a capable NFL starter, which is why the Texans will likely have a quarterback competition in camp this year. But Mallett has done enough that if he does re-sign, he would probably be the favorite to win a competition among the quarterbacks currently on the roster (a list that includes Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, Tom Savage and Thaddeus Lewis). It’s not surprising that Mallett wants to stay in Houston, because Houston is the team that gives Mallett his best chance to be a starter.
Everyone seems to be saying all the right things...

I knew nothing of him before he came to the Texans, so cannot comment much on who he was back then.

But, I think spending several years with Belichick and Brady will either make you start acting like a professional and get your act together, or, you will fail to learn and take care of your business and get cut, and maybe that's the end of your short pro career. Fortunately, it appears that Mallet followed the former.

Agreed. Just going to insert step 1 - watching yourself fall 2 rounds in the draft. On the field he was considered a 1st round talent. He lost millions and having already had a starting chance by now with that fall which luckily was to one of the best situations for a little reflection and learning better habits (and a little something about payback is a beotch from a QB who fell in the draft).

I hope you're right. I don't know exactly why but I feel very excited about the prospect of having him start for the whole season. Has to be something about spending a few years sitting behind Brady and learning from him and Belichick. You don't see that happen often anymore, and that gives you hope that he can just step in and have things click for him.

Great point. If you've ever seen "The Brady 6" on NFLN, about the 6 QBs selected ahead of Brady, you see that Brady is still driven by his draft selection to this day. So hopefully that kind of 'prove them wrong' attitude is in Mallett's mentality, as well.

I agree completely. I'm excited about Mallett as starter in 2015. Maybe I'm drinking Kool-Aid, but for now, I'm optimistic about it. It is a great situation with O'Brien's connection and running the same offense.

:koolaid:

Prediction- Mallett will be a top 12 QB next yr.

Matthew Stafford like, hopefully without the brain dead throws.
