Ryan Mallett is the Texans’ starting quarterback.
Coach Bill O’Brien name Mallett the starter Wednesday, after debating during recent days whether to make a change.
“This might be the thing that helps our team,” O’Brien said at NRG Stadium. “I might be wrong.”
O’Brien said Mallett will be given a full shot to hold the starting role.

Was going to post last night that I believe mallet would be the starter after the off week. Here's to Mallet becoming the next big name QB. :photos:

any word of a contract extension or are we just trotting him out there for the nfl to see? If he does good, it could be very costly next year if Texans didn't wrap him in some kind of extension.

"I might be wrong, but I think this might be the thing that helps our team." -O'Brien on naming Ryan Mallett #Texans starter.

Drew Dougherty @DoughertyDrew
O'Brien: Our whole offense needs to play better. It's about operating the offense. Mallett's gotten better every day in practice.

O'Brien: Ryan Mallett will start at QB.

"He hasn’t played yet. There’s a certain amount of unknown. How’s he going to do?" O'Brien says on Mallett. #Texans

"I wouldn't call him a speed demon," O'Brien says of Mallett. Says on Mallett's inexperience: "You gotta start somewhere." #Texans

"You could tell he had, in my opinion, grown up a lot," O'Brien says of @Ryan_Mallett_15 when he got to Houston. #Texans

Dale Robertson @sportywineguy
BOB: Certain amount of unknown. He's got to go do it.

BOB: Work ethic improved, mature guy. Knows what it takes to be a pro. He learned a lot working with Brady.

BOB: Wouldn't call him a speed demon. He's a pocket passer.

BOB: Mallett has been working like a starter every single day.

BOB: Don't point finger at Fitz. We felt this change would help our offense.

BOB: "Mal" has a strong arm. He can throw it as far you'd want him to.

BOB: Mallett and QB coach George Godsey have a good relationship. Spent a lot of time together.

BOB: Team supportive of move. Team wants to win. It's not a popularity contest. We're doing what's necessary to win.

BOB: Very bright guy. Loves football. He's matured a lot (since NE days). It's obvious he was backup to Tom Brady for 3 years.

BOB: Decision I made. Didn't consult with too many people.

BOB: A lot of things go into playing QB. We feel this is the best move for our football team.

BOB: RM will get a shot to lead this football team, meaning he won't have a quick hook.

BOB: Have ton of respect for Fitzy. He assured he'll be on board.

BOB: Watching Brian in practice every day, he's getting better and better. So we're going to give him his shot and see where it goes.

BOB: If offense doesn't play better, it won't matter who QB is.

BOB QB CHANGE!!! Ryan Mallett will be the starter at @Browns
Greg Bailey @GregBailey13
#Texans O'Brien: I told both QB today at 7am.

#Texans O'Brien: we are excited to see how Mallett does in a game.

#Texans O'Brien jokes that Mallett is not a speed demon.

#Texans O'Brien: not all our issues are on Fitz. Everyone needs to understand that. Mallett has been here early at 6am working hard.

#Texans O'Brien: our guys want to win. Players understand we want to win.

#Texans O'Brien on Mallett: he's very competitive and bright. Obvious to me that he has matured a lot since he came into the league.

#Texans O'Brien: Mallett will be given a real chance. This does not seem to be a 1 game deal to me.

#Texans O'Brien: this is very difficult decision. I have a ton of respect for Fitzpatrick.

#Texans O'Brien: this puts us in best position to win. Mallett is the new starter at QB. Command of offense is key.

#Texans new QB is Ryan Mallett. Official.

Quarterback is just the tip of the ice berg of our problems this year. Just saying.

I don't agree. I think QB makes many of our problems (on offense, must specify we're talking offense only here) look a lot worse than they are.

If Mallet has something then we're going to look better quickly.

Maybe our O-line will block for him.

Im hopeful, but i'm not expecting much. Mallet has to either play lights out and clearly show promise and growth over the next 7 games , or he has to be terrible. He can't be anything in between (which is the most likely scenario) for this to work out for us imo.

Not until after he sucks, i give fans that much credit :kitten:

I was cautiously optimistic after Case threw that third TD to Andre in his first start. A couple of weeks later I started the "Case vs Luck" thread. Because to me, that's what it's all about. Finding a QB that can play well enough to at least get the Texans on that level.

I won't know if Mallet is good enough at the end of this year, none of us would. But by week two, we should be able to identify the issues, then reassess them by week 17 to see if he's headed in the right direction.

Agreed. I believe we're all on the same page here. I'm more excited because I'm hoping we'll finally see the offense we thought we would. I don't know if OB was calling the game to protect Fitzpatrick, or if Fitzpatrick was just overly cautious. But our chance of winning playing that type of football is just way to slim.... reduces the margin of error to almost nil, where you can't make a single false start & still think you're going to score on that drive, much less win the game (the Eagles had 3 false starts for comparison... scored on 2 of the three drives).

Hopefully the offense will open up & our guys can start playing. Hopefully we get the old Duane Brown back, the old Chris Myers, hopefully Brandon Brooks will look like the promising prospect we thought he was. Hopefully we'll start taking advantage of Damaris Johnson's speed, or Keyshawns, or it becomes more important to carry a 5th WR instead of a third NT.

Mallett may end up sucking too, but I'm happy that the Fitzpatrick Tour of Suck is over.

We know he can throw the ball a mile. We know he has been behind Brady and at least knows how to put in the work in the gym and film room. What we don't know is if he can be accurate, if he will make good decisions, if he can develop and sustain a pocket presence. Has he been waiting for this opportunity his entire career, and now he is going show everyone what they have been missing? I hope he is great - I hope he is arrogant - I hope he is pissed - I hope he blows us away. That chapter has yet to be written ...

The point a few of us around here have been making for weeks now isn't that we think Mallett is better, we simply don't know and want to find out. We know exactly what we have in Fitz, and it's .500 ball. If Mallett does turn out to be better, why find out after the season is lost? You're not going to the playoffs at 8-8. If Mallett stinks up the place, you're no worse off and you know what you have, but if he is better and you squeak out an extra couple wins, then the season (and offseason) become worth paying attention too.

There were always two most distinctly reasonable times in our season for this change. One was between weeks 6 & 7 and the other is right now.

Now let's see what the baby giraffe can do in there. Best case scenario and we're not looking at qb's this April. What a relief that would be ..

Maybe our O-line will block for him.

Maybe they'll quit the brain-farts (false starts for example) and quit digging us into holes and killing drives. I'm not worried about the blocking. A QB who can get the ball down the field and make teams pay for blitzing him will do wonders for pass protection. Watching Brown last week lunge across the line I couldn't help but think "That's a guy who's wound way too tight. He's a Pro Bowl LT and he looks like Derrick Newton

A QB who sees the whole field and can process what's happening at the speed necessary to take advantage of what's there will appear to have plenty of time. Fitz doesn't do that. Brady does that. The questions is "Does Mallet do that?"

It's a question we would never be able to answer without seeing him out there playing in a real game. No amount of preseason pretend football will tell us that. It's really more important than his "Laser-Rocket Arm" or his height, or his "wheels". What's between a QB's ears is what matters most.

Amen! Wouldn't it be nice to load up on linebackers this year?

At least this will be an interesting move. Glad he's getting a chance. Can he be worse than Fitz? Stay tuned...

I'd like to Posey get activated to take advantage of Mallet's arm strength. He's the best downfield threat that the Texans have.
