Ryan Kalil

His biggest knock has been his strength, but he just sky-rocketed himself up many boards with that lift total. The time was expected. He has always been a slightly undersized (until this week), good moving, intelligent C.

I would liked to have seen us get him in the 2nd, but with how his combine is going, I doubt he hits the 2nd. Might even make the low 20s of the first. Guy looks real good both on film and in shorts and seems/supposed to be a smart guy. Pretty much all you want at center, particularly in a ZB scheme.

Man, i think my dreams just crumbled. makes me really want to trade with new england so we can pick him up with maybe the 2nd of their two first rders. but i don't see who new england would want to trade up for and dont see that happening at all. darn darn darn...kalil would have REALLY helped us.

i know i cant believe that.....there are some really fast guys for the oline group....allen barbre.....any one know him or have thoughts on him????he ran an official 4.84

he just did a great job in the mirror drill. nice low base....man i like im so much...would it be wrong to want him at 8????lol i really do....he is just a solid player and has a great work ethic.....in control over his entire body movement....would fans be mad if we took him at 8?

I was really impressed with Kalil. He weighed in at 299, and that was 10 Lbs heavier than his playing weight. He did nothing but help himself with his performance at the combine. I can't see him slipping out of the 1st round. As I was watching him, I was thinking "here's the guy the Texans should pick with their 2nd rd selection". But he won't be there. Anyone think he would be a reach with the 8th pick?

I still think Kalil is the kind of lineman the Texans need. Light, smart, and good leadership intangibles. I would not be against trading up to get the dude. He would have an immediate impact.

Reality, though...the Texans will probably stick with McKinney this year and address other areas.

...there are some really fast guys for the oline group...
Can someone explain to me why an offensive lineman needs to be tested for his speed in a 40-yard dash? How often does that happen during a football game?

I think all of the test are somewhat neccessary....Even the mental parts...

It's about giving a player a total athletic grade...

Otherwise they should just time how fast a lineman can kick step or time how long it takes him to push a three hundred pound boulder five yards....

No they may not ever run 40 yards in an actual game, but it is an important part in determining the players total athletic ability...

For linemen it really just test overall athletic ability and endurance. What is important in the drill are the initial splits.

While footspeed is very important to backs and critical to receivers and the
corners who cover them, it is also of some importance to offensive lineman.
If one takes the time to watch the Oline and not just the players at skill positions, he will notice that Olinemen, especially in the ZB scheme which the
Texans are now operating from, often have linemen on the backside of rushing plays down field 20 or more yards to put blocks on DBs.
Footspeed is also important for a teams Olinemen if the team runs a lot of plays where it would require its interior lineman to be proficient at pulling.

...or time how long it takes him to push a three hundred pound boulder five yards...
That would make sense. I like your thinking there.

People say running the 40 is important, but I don't see it. Even the 10 yard splits, it's against air. Maybe if they had a timed test where the lineman would hit a blocking sled, roll off, and hit another sled 10 yards downfield...that would make sense. The 40 for linemen is pretty useless to really learn which player is better.

The guy looks awesome. The problem is whether or not teams need him. I don't see him going any sooner than the late first round, based solely on need. Too many teams are going to be grabbing cornerbacks, quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers to get a center. And when it came to the play-off caliber teams, they had some pretty solid lines. In fact, the two opportunities I see are KC or Baltimore. KC had real trouble with their line, but would they rather draft a talented Wide Receiver? For Baltimore, it really depends on whether Ogden retires. If he does, maybe the Ravens take a chance on a center and move a lineman or two around. Again, I'm having a hard time seeing it. I think most of the other teams are set with centers at this level.

That makes Kalil fall to the second round. I still don't think he will fall to the Texans. Cleveland has the biggest need for Kalil what with them losing Bentley. But Oakland and Detroit could also use some big-time help. I think the Raiders will use the pick on defensive needs, though. If the Lions have enough brass to pass on any combination of Russell/Quinn/CJ/AP to nab Kalil, then they will have the stones to make a phenomenal draft with Thomas/Kalil in the first two rounds. This is where I think Kalil will go.

I too think Kalil will go to one of those top teams in the 2nd. I've seen a few mocks w/ him going to Baltimore in the 1st...but from talking on ravens forums, they said they strictly go BPA..no matter the position.

Oakland signed a FA Center...so hopefully that puts them out of the mix.
Detroit-I honestly don't really see them taking Thomas in the first because they resigned their LT to big $ and got Denvers RT in the trade..along with Bell. With the losing of Bly could they go best CB in the sedond? Kalil is a posibilty.
Cleveland-I'm really hoping they go with Quinn in the first...but may thomas if he's there or russell? I think they would be the team to take Kalil because of Bentley's injury....Did they sign a FA RB? I can't remember but I think if they go Quinn or Thomas in the first they could go Michael Bush in the 2nd...
Tampa-??don't know enough about them
Arizona-obviously need line help but dont know about their C position..they could probably use that help but if they dont get Thomas or Brown in the 1st they could always go LT in 2nd like w/ Staley if available.
Washington-??
Minny???

So the chances of Kalil falling to us is better than I first thought because of the other talent available...but there is still a great chance he'd be gone. Even if Kalil is there for us.I can see thetexans taking a WR or DB maybe..so i will be very anxious come april 28!!!

yep i thought so too after looking at teams...at least on paper far as their center situations go. I do think we'll see a late run on WR and CB's in the later part of first round.

Washington doesn't have a second round pick so that helps. On paper i'm not sure what Baltimore needs....someone to replace thomas? Michael Bush?

Arizona...RT? Leinart is a lefty.

Minny...lost Fred Smoot...good second round corner should be available.

Cleveland....They'll Pick AP and if Charlie Frye is still the guy in their opinion do they add someone for him to throw to? Outside of Braylon Edwards i think that's a weak corps. Can Winslow stay healthy? Olsen drops?

Detriot... WR?! jk. Kevin Jones has issues. Bush or Hunt here? Also for mentioned Bly now gone.

Oakland... I thought Grove wasn't too bad but yeah hope the FA center takes them out of that spot. However guard help? Blaylock?

Tampa...i have no clue here. but they REALLY need defensive help with an Aging no longer Dominant D.

Of course this is all specualtion.

Bout the only thingy I use the forty time for on the OT's is an estimate of how athletic they are. Good barameter to watch this season, and not take my word for it, watch how many of the guys around the 5.0 bench mark end up making a squad and being top end guys. Good example of that is the former TE from arkansas, Jason Peters, now playing OLT for Buffalo. And how many of the guys over 5.3 end up being aroung only for a cup of coffee in the summer. The 5.0 , and sub 5.0 guys are pretty good OLT/LG canidates. Not perfect by any means. Dockery can't run a trout line. But he's a pretty good RG. He got paid this off season for sure.

I think that's what they use the short shuttles and the three cone drills on the o-lineman. To see who can drop their hips and run. And who cannot. Can't dip your hits and explode, you've got Seth Wand.

OTOH, Yony Ugoh has all the numbers in the world for an o-lineman. Mind boggeling numbers. Doesn't mean he can translate the athletisism in the NFL. He's an athlete for sure. I'm not convienved that he's ever going to be a starting offensive tackle, even with all of his mind numbing numbers. Just judging by the senior bowl workouts, someone is going to have to coach him up hard to give him a shot at the next level.

Tampa and Cleveland both need OL help. If Kalil gets out of the first I do not see him lasting past those two if not the Bears could look to add talent at 37, and the Cards need OL help.

Also remember the Cards already drafted a OG from USC and I think the QB has played with Kalil in the past. That could be helpful.

Not sure if the Bears would pick him unless they wanted to groom him for a few years behind Olin Kreutz.

Tampa runs more of a Road Grader style running game. Not sure how he'd mesh with that.

Cleveland traded for Hank Fraley with the Eagles last year. I think they have bigger concerns then grooming someone at that spot.

Cards definately need help but does he fit with what they are going to be doing? I guess this pick for them really depends on their first round selection. For what it's worth the center they have listed is a 4 year starter. Denny knows skillset Talent but he needed help with the OLINE.

not only that but Kalil doesn't fit a lot of their schemes...
