Ryan Kalil

Silver Oak

All Pro
To some of the draft gurus on here...

Would it make sense, or even be possible, to trade down and pick up Ryan Kalil (center), and maybe pick up an extra selection in the second or third round?

This guy did well during the Senior Bowl and while a bit undersized, is intelligent and could be a leader on our o-line for years to come.

Kalil is the top-rated center in the draft from what I've heard and seen. I just don't think he'll stay on the board past the second round (hell, I figure he'll get picked up in the first round or the top of the second).

Ryan Kalil's stock is going to keep going up he his the best rated center in the draft and O-lineman are few and far between this year IMO by draft day he will be a 1st round pick I dont know who but someone will "reach" just to have him on there team. Telling everyone now Kalil will NOT be on the board in the Second Round.

Even if he is on the board in the second round, the Raiders, Lions, Bucs, and Browns could all use line help. I suspect one of them to pick up the top-ranked center.

I called it early in the college football season that he would be the best C in the draft. Nice to see everyone joining me in this thought. He isn't as good as Mangold, and Mangold went 4th in the 2nd round last year. I don't expect Kalil to go 1st round, even thought he has the talent as did Mangold. I actually expect Kalil to be dang close to BPA when our turn comes up in the 2nd. The next C I want is Dan Mozes from West Virginia, the All-American.

I'm not sold on Mozes' pass-blocking ability.

He doesn't look very good at it and he never did get a lot of practice at it in college playing for team that runs all game.

What about Doug Datish from Ohio State. I have seem him listed at Center and at Guard. Where would you play him? and What round would you consider him?

I guess what I'm saying is, if the coveted LT position is pretty thin this year, why should we reach for someone at that spot? Let's fill one of our needs, and acquire more picks in subsequent rounds.

If the scouts opinion of Kalil continus to rise, then I'm positive some team would be willing to trade with us to get our 8th spot.

He's good, but I don't think he's that good.

IMO, I'd rather the Texans draft Levi, shift Spencer to RT, Winston to RG, and Weary to Center.

I like Datish, but for center. The Texans need a center.

D'Brick went 4th in the 1st round.
Mangold went 29th in the 1st round.

I could see Kalil going around 29 too, if not I'm afraid he'll get picked in the 2nd sometime before us.

YTF, Mango (sp intentional) went #29 to the Jets in round 1.
I agree with you on Mozes, I also like Doug Datish. The Texans need help at center. They also need help at LT, but I'll just leave that alone for now.

Even if Kalil makes it to round 2, no way he drops past the likes of DET, OAK, CLE, AZ....yikes. We would have to move up to grab him round 2.

Sorry, Ole Miss Texan and everyone. Had I read further, I would have seen that OMT already corrected the draft pick of Mango. My bad. I'm still getting the hang of this.

kalil's stock will be sold when he works out at the combine...if he lifts real good like 30+ times on 225lbs then he'll go low 1st round...anything close to 30 reps but like 28 he'll go in the 2nd...only if he does something weak like 16 will he go past the 2nd round

IMO if he's our best option in the 2nd round i wouldn't be sad...but in some mocks i see guys like michael griffin falling to us...paul posluszny falling to us...even tank tyler...any of those three i would take before kalil...but i couldn't argue against taking him in the 2nd even if those players were there

I would take Kalil before all of those guys. Griffin is a SS hybrid, and we don't need anymore. Posluszny isn't even the best LB on his team in this draft, and only the 3rd best LB from his school (Conor stayed). Tyler just doesn't do anything for me more than TJ did coming out. I'll pass on them all.

I would, however, consider passing Kalil for Chris Houston or Levi Brown if he falls.

Why dont you think Griffin can play FS in the pros?

He looks pretty good to me.

Never say never, but I have a hard time imaging any circumstance in which Levi falls that far.

I would be very tempted to pass Kalil for a sharp cover corner. Then pick up a Dan Mozes or Doug Datish later. 2 birds, with, errrrr, 2 stones.

michael griffin can play FS in the pros...levi brown will not fall...paul posluszny when it's all said and done will be the best linebacker in this years draft mark my words...patrick willis will be a very close second...ryan kalil depending on how he lifts will determine if we go after him or not

Anybody like John Sullivan from Notre Dame? I think he could be a late round steal for someone. Two years in pro set offenses and under Charlie Weis. He might be a possible 4th/5th round sleeper.

to be honest there isn't that many centers in this draft that i would draft...kalil is solid...datish is sluggish...fry is too much of a waist bender...young is probably getting moved to RT...and everyone else just doesn't seem to have nfl talent...guys like mozes, sendlein, harris, and satele are guys who in college did great but maybe not translate in the pros

one guy i do give a wild card to is scott stephenson from iowa state...this kid was turning heads at the texas vs. the nation bowl and could be a udfa steal

Heck yes! With the 8th pick, we could trade back and get Kalil late in the first, and I'd demand a 2nd rounder to make it happen. I'm a pro-trade-back guy.

Yea I like Stephenson.

He's probably the 2nd best Center in the Big 12.

Are you implying that we take Kalil in the 1st round? That makes no sense at all and won't happen. Kalil will probably go somewhere in the mid-late 2nd round, I would may be look at him in the 2nd but I think there will be several other players available that I'd rather have. If he's around in the 3rd then I definitely take a serious look at him, but also that would end up depending on who else is available. I'd rather have Josh Beekman over him though, I like him better and he can play C or either G spot.

I take Kalil over Beekman. I also don't think Kalil will last till the late 2nd, where as I don't excpet Beekman to go before. There aren't many guys I would draft over Kalil in the 2nd. I would consider Timmons if available, Merriwether, and Houston. Other than that, I take Kalil.

I would still take Beekman over Kalil, I think he's a much more stout run blocker and he can play any of the interior spots in case we need to move him around for whatever reason, and I would easily take Meriweather or Houston over either of them.

Beekman is a guard not a Center & the Texans have plenty of guards (don't need to use a 2nd rounder here) what they lack is a true Center & Left Tackle. Far as guards Beekman is highly rated possibly even the #1 prospect as Kalil is the #1 Center prospect but for my money I'd pass on Beekman & look @ Texas Tech Manuel Ramirez who has a real nasty streak about him & even stonger (not as polished) in the 4th rd. if I wanted another guard.

Beekman can play both, he spent half of last year at center and did just as well there as he did at guard, and he's short and built more like a typical center.

congratulations I guess you discovered something that no one else has :victory:

from what I can find he only had three starts at Center, hardly the pedigree to start in the NFL. lets see, redshirted his freshman season. was a reserve in 03 starting twice @ LG. 2004/05 started all 12 games @ RG. only this year did he play three games @ Center. no thanks :shades: I'm not in favor of projections this high in the draft when the Texans need sure things.

Well if you watch tape of him you see that he ended up switching to C several times, for that matter it was kind of strange and sometimes he'd switch back and forth between C and G in the same drive.

Did anyone know that Ryan's dad, Frank, played center for the Houston Gamblers?
Highlights from USC C Ryan Kalil's press conference:

Measured in at 6-2, 299 pounds.

Teams have talked to him about playing guard, but understands "the more you can do" concept and that he'll play center in the League.

His father, Frank, was a center at Arkansas and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1982 and played in the USFL for two years, 1984 with Jim Kelly and the Houston Gamblers.

Ryan was a high school tackle, but said "SC needed a center, so I said, hey, pops, you've got to help me out on this one."
That would be pretty cool if Kalil followed in his dad's footsteps to play in Houston. I don't know if many of you can remember the Gamblers, but they were my favorite team. I still believe that Jim Kelly is the greatest pro QB to play for Houston.

That'd be sweet! Sure wish we could send some sort of memo out to the nfl..saying hey let's just let him play for houston!

small world.

I am high on Kalil in part because he has size and speed, but the guy is also smart and is supposed to be a real o-line leader, which I think the Texans need. I think he could learn a lot with Flanagan at his side, but would sync perfectly into a ZBS.

On the down-side, I think Kalil is too good to come here unless the Texans work out a trade in the second round. If Kalil is not taken in the late first round, then surely Arizona, Cleveland (needs a replacement to Bentley), Detroit, or Oakland will pick him up. He would be a long-term answer to any of these teams' line problems. That's why I've started trying to take a closer look at Datish and some of the other centers.
