Russ Grimm will be the next coach of the Houston Texans.

1. He is a Casserly guy (former member of the "Hogs" O-line from Washington)

2. He has overseen one of the best offensive line units in the NFL over the last few years (Pittsburgh)

Here is his bio from www.steelers.com:

Russ Grimm is in his fourth season as the Steelers offensive line coach. He was given the additional title of Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach in January 2004.

Grimm, 44, joined the Steelers Jan. 10, 2000 as only the second offensive line coach in Bill Cowher’s 10 seasons and was instrumental in developing one of the most-improved areas on the team in 2001. Grimm spent the previous 19 years as a player and a coach with the Washington Redskins.

Grimm has molded an offensive front that is considered one of the best in the NFL. Among the group are guard Alan Faneca, who earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for a second consecutive season in 2002, and center Jeff Hartings, who developed in one of the best in the NFL after just two seasoons there. Grimm also has tutored three-year offensive tackle Marvel Smith, who blossomed into a consistent tackle, guard Kendall Simmons, who had an outstanding rookie season in 2002—earning a starting role at right guard in Week 2—and has helped developed reserve linemen tackles Oliver Ross and Mathias Nkwenti, guard Keydrick Vincent, and center Chukky Okobi.

houstonprofootball.com is saying that Gary Kubiak "is going to be near the top of the list of candidates to succeed Capers."

No offense but I haven't heard of many line coaches being offered the job to go straight to head coach, maybe I am wrong. Now hire Kubiak as HC and Grimm as our OC, I'll take it.

Both might be good candidates - but if it were me I would certainly lean more towards Kubiak being hes a proven SB Offensive Coordinator - not just a line coach. I think he could fidn a decent line coach and make it work for him in his offense.

I'm not so sure Grimm has that experience nor could he compete on the same level as Kubiak with offense. I grant you he would be a good candidate for a job maybe as OC, but not as the Head Coach.

Wasnt Mike Tice the OL coach in Minny before getting the HC job?

He was assistant head coach/offesive line coach the season before he was promoted to head coach.

That shouldn't matter if Casserly is gone too and lets all pray that he is. Also, Grimm was part of the good Redskins teams that Bobby Bethard put together, not the horrible Redskins teams that Casserly put together. It gets annoying when everyone thinks Casserly put all those Skins Super Bowl teams together. Casserly is responsible for the Heather Shuler, Desmond Howard Redskins teams.

Let's be clear, I am not implying that Casserly built the great Redskins teams, but he was the assistant GM during those years, and was thus involved with the FO operations of those teams.

Also, let's be straight about who gets credit for building those Redskins teams. I think everyone would be mistaken to think that Bobby Beatherd built those teams, and Joe Gibbs just coached them. Gibbs, IMO, had alot to do with that teams success. Example? Anyone remember Jay Schroeder? How about Mark Rypien? Doug Williams?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Bobby Beartherd the GM at San Diego who made the trade for Ryan Leaf?

My point is that Grimm is really being talked about in the NFL circles. I get my info from none other than John McClain, who has mentioned Grimm twice that I know of on 610 sports. McClain knows his stuff.

Plus, Kubiak was the hot prospect 4 years ago. I have nothing against Kubiak, but if he's so great, why hasn't he gotten a HC job in the league yet?

there are a lot of aggies lying about kubiak in a lot of threads now.

kubiak ONCE declined to be interviewed for a HC position in houston because he wanted to succeed dan reeves at denver. denver went with shanahan instead.

kubiak has never turned down an offer to be a HC, as was claimed in another thread- that is so ridiculous it is embarassing.

No one other than Ryan Leaf is to blame for Ryan Leaf busting. Plenty of blame can be passed around if one feels Carr is a bust.

Actually, according to Richard Justice of the Chronicle, Casserly was responsible for drafting eight of the defensive starters for the last Redskins Super Bowl team, and Mark Schlereth to boot.

BIG DEAL!!!

The last time the Redskins won the superbowl, I had a pet dinosaur.

Casserly's time has come and gone. I vote for a new GM

And I don't want Grimm as HC. OC....maybe. Offensive Line Coach, definitely.

Kubiak is on my top 3 HC list.

And I vote Gregg Williams or Wade Phillips for DC.

I could be wrong but i think Art Shell was only a O-Line coach before getting promoted to Head Coach of the Radiers.

I am down with Kubiak, but what is the name of the Eagles OC? I heard he could be one to.

His name is Brad Childress, and he just signed a new deal this year with the Eagles.

Okay, did not know that. :goodnight
Most coaches are given permission to seek a coaching position at a higher level than they currently possess. If Childress was offered a HC position I'm sure he could take it if he wanted. The contract can and will be broken as long as the team allows.

you people need to realize something: Pendry used to be the line coach in denver under Kubiak. Keep Pendry as the OL coach if we get Kubiak. They run the same system and have had success in the past together.

Pendry never worked in Denver.

look right now it doesn't matter to speculate who the next head coach is gonna be...we have a pretty long list of names to pick from...mostly made up of offensive and defensive coordinators...but let's get one thing clear if you think there is a head coach out there that can take on the GM duties as well you're just plain wrong...if you fire casserly who would you get to GM the team..that's the question to ask

Any new coach will postpone a winning season by 2-3 seasons, maybe more if we swap coaches now.

Then look at the cleveland browns, that is our future.

I think it would be a big mistake to change our coach and GM especially since it is a lack of quality personnel to produce rather than having the personnel and just not producing...

If it wasnt just our 4th season of existence I would agree we need a new coach, but we have barely have enough talent at the starting positions to be competitive let alone have have quality backups & off the bench impact players.

Just because we were hyped to make the step to the next level but had setbacks does not mean we need to axe the coach or GM. I say 2 more years since we have a lineman heavy draft this year. It is not like they have ignored the O Line problem. There has just never been a quality solution readily available to us.

bs.

take a step back for a just a second and follow me...

4 of our 5 o-line starters have played together.

toss the "cohesion arrgument".

all of these starters have previous experience in the nfl and have never played this bad.

all of our coaches past and present had extensive experience...their pass protection schemes didnt become outdated overnight.

all of the pieces in the equation have nfl caliber experience in some form or another. dont misunderstand me...no one piece was ever great...all about average but never this bad.

this isnt a question of talent...this is a question of effort.

they dont give a ****.

casserly hasnt been perfect-----no gm is ,but the talent is here.

I just disagree with you outofhnd and I think that the problem is coaching here. I'd be concerned with a new coach adding a couple of years to our wait for a winning season but I don't think Capers is any closer right now to one than this hypothetical new head coach.

In year four I think you should see signs that the team is on the same page. The Browns fired Palmer in his second season if I'm not mistaken (?) and that I do not doubt was far too soon to pull the trigger. Capers had four years in Carolina and I think four years in Houston is plenty of time.

I'm a little curious what you consider to be our setbacks this season. In 2003 when we had a rash of injuries that was considered a setback IMO. You can't judge a defense, or even a team properly when they're facing that kind of adversity. It's just not fair. So far in 2005 I see a linebacker and a defensive tackle hurt. Oh, and I almost forgot that we can now add a Pro Bowl wide receiver to that list who we won't miss because we haven't used him much anyway.

I just don't think we've had "setbacks" on a scale to justify this teams performance so far. They came into the season healthy and supposedly faster and better prepared than ever before. That nets us an 0-4 record and sole posession of the basement in the AFC South?

effort.

the players have choosen a "mute course" on which to rid themselves of capers. he lost this team. mutiny is abound.

in addition to that we did loose leaders on defense over the offseason. their talent wasnt whats being missed...thier prescence is.

in addition to that we drafted "non-factors".

tj an morency were both slotted to be back up contributers. this is the 1st year our 1 wouldnt play a signifigant role.

young team+no leaders+no heart+bad coaching=a recipe for the #1 pick in the draft.

Palmer was fired after 2 seasons in Cleveland yes for basically letting Tim Couch rot on the sidelines only to end up a scrub. Butch Davis came in took them to a wild card then they went back to being the worst team in their division, Now they have Romeo Crennel and the hopes he can turn it around. Which looks to be a 3 year plan. Considering they are playing Dilfer and not starting Frye until next year barring injury to Dilfer. Personnel and playbook changes take atleast 1 full season so we are looking at a mediocre 07 season. If they change the Defense then thats maybe over .500 08 season. If he wants a new QB/Rb/WR because of the trade value we could get with our trio, then we are looking at even longer.

Our O line has only one draft pick in it (pitts) with the rest being spares that their respective franchises would not resign... Early this offseason we went for the one tackle that would be a rock and that was Pace. He was worth it. the rest were not. They brought Riley in figuring that 8 years in the pros might make him a better protector?

How is it a coaching problem when our line man all have more than 5 years experience look terrible compared to Pitts who appears to be our best lineman? the player with only 4 years exp?.
These guys should not have to be coached on how to block. If it was bad coaching then pitts wouldnt even be starting caliber. Our problem lies in the scheme, 6-4 333+ pound men are not made to zone block. they are made to just push forward. that was Palmers fault. he was the one guy I wanted to see leave.

I honestly believe with some young linemen we could get better protection for DC these guys just arent the athletes they once were and show the slower step against speed rushers. let them draft the O line this year andgive them a year to develop it before we throw em out. I dont thinka new coach is goin to take what Dom leaves and carry on with few changes. especially Kubiak who loves the west coast offense. Defense who knows he may change us to a 4 - 3 . I say give em the chance. 2 more years cant be any worse than getting a new coach and scrapping the 1st 4 years of building this team.

The setbacks this year is once again tinkering with the line (Adding Riley) If you cant add a top tier talent dont add something that may be just a little better. Save it for the end all solution.

There really wasnt much in the TE market but we still are out 1 every down TE.

Palmers offense is to vanilla and has few wrinkles but you just cant make a new playbook in week 6 with different wrinkles.

We did come in here faster on Defense but when you have to play on your side of the field you start to get defeated. Things go wrong!

4 years is not nearly long enough when you are starting with virtually nothing

What about Tom Moore, the OC for the Colts. Not only is he brilliant with offenses and OL, but we could steal him from the colts!!

Well, he's under contract so we could never get him for OC. I don't think he's really qualified for GM, so it would be for HC. We tried and failed with a defense first minded HC, so why not go full circle with an offense first HC?
