I'm starting to get nervous. Lundy doesnt do it for me. 500 yards his senior year? Late draft pick? It feels like a point is trying to be made. The system is greater than conventional wisdom.

Lundy and Morency together should make the system very effective. Domanick would have been our starter..but we have to make do with what we have and these 2 guys together i think will get the job done.

I agree

Yeah, cause late round picks and even undrafted free agents can't make it in the NFL at running back. Not that Lundy is as good as, or will have the same success as them...but one just has to look at some recent late round/undrafted free agents to know that drafting is not an exact science. Terrell Davis (6th round), Priest Holmes (undrafted), Willie Parker (undrafted, Mike Anderson (undrafted). Those are just a few off of the top of my head. Lundy may or may not have the success some of them have had, but like Willie Parker, Lundy was overlooked coming out of college and landed on a team and in a system that just may work for him.

It's  Wali's  World

Before this years college Draft, how many would have predicted the Texans
would be starting a rookie running back in the season opener this year whose name wasn't Reggie Bush ?

Just so you know, Lundy was injured his senior year. Kubes mentioned this in his post-practice comments yesterday. This is the main reason he fell so far.

Does anyone think Ron Dayne is going to end up with the Texans?

No. I dont understand everyones infatuation with Dayne. The guy is horrible. Has done nothing in the NFL. Had one good game with Denver last year.

He didn't do anything in Denver. This ain't Denver. I think Kubiak is going to give him some consideration.

The reason is he knows the system and could be a good option in the red zone I am tiried of field goals but that being said I would not want him if he is injuried I trust Coach K and all in all no one just jump out at me during these cuts.

Still the NFL, and he hasnt done anything in the NFL. 6 years in the league, average 3.7 yards per carry (5.1 while at Denver - most of which came off of 1 game - 14 ypc).

I'm all for brining in talent, but Dayne is not it. Would rather have an injured Davenport or Suggs instead of Dayne. (You might be able to tell I really dislike his game) He has never been the back he should have been. Not a short yardage back, will not move the pile.

Picking any of these guys is like rolling the dice. They all have some medical history baggage with them.

I hear you I don't care for it either but I think he his above the curve because of where he is coming from. Myself I would look for DB help looking at Middlebrook from Denver, Demps from the Lions or even Mickens from the Jets don't stone me I just think we take a look depth maybe, because we are are thin in that area.

I think of all these high talent/ low production guys, Calico and Davenport are the most intriguing. Davenport has done some unspeakable things but is among the most physically gifted players in the game. Calico is huge with that 4.34 and still young, but injuries have been a major concern.

Back to our running game though, did anyone else interpret Kubes comments in the chron the way I did:
A) he thinks the world of Lundy
B) Lundy is the featured back, not just the starter... Morency will spell him, not split carries.

People make much of Kubes commitee approach in Denver, but that's not necessarily his preference. He tended to give the job to guys like Griffin, Droughns, Gary, Anderson, Davis, etc. until somebody took it away or they got injured.

I think Ron Dayne is going to get signed. A big back and I thik that Kubiak liked him, but Shanahan wasn't a big supporter of him. Look for #33 to be roaming the backfield soon! Knows Kubiaks way, the Denver scheme, easy adjustment, and we don't have the time to teach new guys a system in 6 days before Philly!

#33 already is roaming the backfield, and I think Kubiak likes him too...

Chris Taylor is a better football player than Ron Dayne. He will prove this true as soon as he is given the chance. Chris is a determined, hard nosed player who will help the Texans WIN (not just participate) many football games if given a chance during the regular season. He will soon prove more valuable than Lundy or Morency. Some continue to focus on Chris not being drafted and being a first-year player in the NFL. As spoken by others, many players have been spectacular in the NFL after being overlooked in the draft. As far as experience goes, I'll take Chris Taylor's speed, athleticism, guts and drive over some experienced guys any day. Mark my words, Chris will be a star in this league, it's just a matter of giving him the ball and playing time!

I keep getting conflicting reports that Chris made the team. Everywhere I see via local and national media, he has. On a yahoo sports side, it says he was cut. Can we get some official verification please.

he was cut today...look for us to sign him to the practice squad...or at least try to.

I'm not concerned with our running game at all, as everybody knows and it's been stated and proven many many times that you don't need a star RB to be succesful in this system. Terrel Davis, Mike Anderson and Orlandis Gary proved just that.

I prefer Morency to Lundy, but both have looked solid, and the system has definitely turned unknowns into studs. In case you need a reminder of the past unconventional wisdom and success of the system:

1995: Shanahan/Kubiak's first year in Denver, first year implementing system. A relatively unknown 6th round pick RB from Georgia named Terrell Davis starts from week 1, racks up 1117 yards and 7 TDs on 237 carries (4.7 ypc) along with 367 rushing yards in 14 games with three games of 100+ rushing yards. Broncos finish 5th in the league in rushing offense, 3rd in total offense (after finishing 23rd and 5th respectively the previous year).

1996: Terrell Davis rushes for 1538 yards and 13 TDs on 345 carries (4.5 ypc), including seven 100+ rushing yard games. Broncos finish ranked 1st in rushing offense and 1st in total offense, and go 13-3.

1997: Terrell Davis rushes for 1750 yards and 15 TDs on 367 carries (4.7 ypc), including ten 100+ yard rushing games and two 200+ yard games. The Broncos finish 4th in rushing yards, 1st in total offense, go 12-4, and win the Super Bowl.

1998: Terrell Davis rushes for 2008 yards and 21 TDs on 392 carries (5.1 ypc) , including eleven 100+ rushing yard games. The Broncos finish 2nd in rushing offense, 3rd in total offense, go 14-2, and win the Super Bowl.

1999: Terrell Davis goes down in the 4th game of the year, a 4th round pick rookie RB named Olandis Gary (coincidentally? also from Georgia) steps in for Davis (who was the clear cut star at the beginning of the year) and starts the next 12 games, racking up 1159 yards and 7 TDs in 276 carries (4.2 ypc) including four games of 100+ rushing yards, including consecutive games of 183 and 185 yards. Broncos finish 12th in the league in rushing, 13th in total offense. Broncos go 6-10, the only losing record Shanahan/Kubiak had in 11 seasons together, also due largely to the retirement of John Elway.

2000: Davis only plays 4 games, Gary gets injured in the 1st game and misses the rest of the season. A rookie 6th round FB named Mike Anderson steps in starting the 2nd game of the year and racks up 1487 yards and 15 TD on 297 carries (5.0 ypc), including six 100+ yard rushing games (with consecutive games of 195 yards and 2 TDs with 251 yards and 4 TDs). Broncos rebound to 11-5, finish 2nd in the league in rushing yards, 2nd in the league in total offense.

2001: Davis and Gary are both limited by injuries, Mike Anderson sees some time as well as the Broncos split carries and only finish 10th in rushing and 22nd in total offense without a clear cut #1 option.

2002: After Davis retires and Gary's career is in shambles, Denver uses a 2nd round pick on Clinton Portis, who rushers for 1508 yards and 15 TDs on 273 carries (5.5 ypc) as a rookie, including eight games of 100+ rushing yards, highlighted by a 228 yard performance in the last game of the year. Broncos finish 5th in the league in rushing and 3rd in total offense.

2003: Portis continues a tear and runs for 1591 yards and 14 TDs on 290 carries (5.5 ypc), including ten 100+ yard rushing games. The Broncos finish 2nd in rushing offense and 8th in total offense.

2004: Despite his great success, the Broncos decide they can do without Portis' talents and trade him for the best shutdown CB in the league to boost their defense. Despite losing their star, another unknown FB that is in his 4th year in the league (3rd with Broncos) named Reuben Droughns steps in and rushes for 1240 yards and 6 TDs on 275 carries (4.5 ypc), including six 100+ rushing yard games after amassing just 97 total rushing yards in the previous three seasons. The Broncos finish 4th in rushing offense and 5th in total offense.

2005: Droughns leaves to Cleveland and continues to produce, Mike Anderson returns to the limelight and splits carries all season long with a 2nd year, 2nd round RB in Tatum Bell. The two combine for 1935 yards and 20 TDs on 412 carries (239-1014-12 for Anderson, 173-921-8 for Bell). The Broncos finish 2nd in the league in rushing, 4th in total offense and go 13-3 and make the AFC Championship game.

2006: Anderson leaves during the offseason, Shanahan names an undrafted rookie their starter, how will things turn out?

My instincts tell me that Kubiak will want to lean towards Dayne. Charlie Rogers is a head case with issues, we don't need his kind here. Same goes with Suggs, another knucklehead that can't handle the notoriety.

what ever Kubiak decides, I'll have to accept. But the guy that I'm really impressed by so far is Smith! For a guy as young as he is he seems to have a pretty good grasp on the available players and what kind of player is right for this system. Between these two I think the correct decision for the team will be made.

Look at DD for example. In my mind, saving this guy from possible reinjury was a good move. Davis is a solid back who can offer you several options, why would you do anything other than what they all decided to do? Now we have, for all intents and purposes, a fresh experienced back for next year. Great move, and just the kind of rational thinking that I would have expected from this new administration. These guys actually like each other and communicate!! Who woulda thunk it??

After watching this scheme with what I have to describe as a critical eye, I have to admit that I can see how easily an average back can become a great back. The blocking compared to last year is incredibly different scheme wise. Maybe it's Flanagan, mabe it's the communication that the coaches are demanding, but whatever it is, it reminds me a lot of the old, and I mean Madden and Flores Old, Raiders scheme, and they always had solid blocking and ground game.
