Rumor: Texans interested in Matt Cassell Re-signs w/Vikings

If we can get Cassell and he can avoid throwing 5 pick 6s in 5 consecutive games then he has done a good job. Fact is the kid played well under O'brien, ever think maybe it is our system/coaching that was flawed. .

O'Brien was the TEs coach when Cassell played well in New England. Josh McDaniels (the Patriots current OC/QB coach) was Cassell's OC/QB coach.

Doesn't mean we can't win with Cassell, just an FYI.

I remember in 2011, after Schaub got hurt, I still had hopes that we'd get to the AFC Championship game. We had a strong running game, with a dominant OL, Arian Foster, & Ben Tate. The Defense did their part, by getting off the field.

Not so much has changed in the NFL, that a team built that way can still go far with a game manager at QB. Not that I'm satisfied with a game manager at QB. I just don't want to spend an elite draft pick on a non-elite player. Even if we trade down to 5, I wouldn't want to spend that pick on any of these QBs. 12~15 is where I think these QBs should go & if we can fall into that range.. well, I'd probably spend the 10th pick on one of them, but that's my stretch pick.

I don't think it is imperative that we get a QB in this draft. I don't think you have to have a top 5 pick to get a franchise QB. Aaron Rodgers was picked with the 23rd, Flacco with the 18th, Roethlisberger & Cutler were picked with the 11th. & we've had multiple picks in that range.

Our problem was (& I'm just as guilty as anyone) sticking with a guy who could have been & passing on those guys I mentioned. Heck... to tell you the truth, I believe Kubiak could have made Kevin Kolbe & Brady Quinn more "special" than he made Schaub.

What does excite me about next season, is that OB brought in RAC to run the defense. Hopefully he'll let Romeo do his thing & focus on his offense, something he's supposed to be good at. Then guys like Garopolo, Smith, & Fales enter the equation as possible franchise QBs...... imo. Maybe even Keenum.

But he's so little.

Because he was such a good mentor to Keenum last season. Always in Kubiak's ear about getting in the game.

How great is Cassell going to be? He probably fancies himself as a starter and when he loses that to the young pup, I doubt he welcomes the change with open arms.

My reasoning is based on money. If we hadn't stupidly extended Schaub, I would be all for it.

Cassel just resigned with the Vikings according to Ian Rappaport of NFL Network.

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet
Matt Cassel is re-signing with the #Vikings, per source.

Alex Marvez ‏@alexmarvez
Confirming @RapSheet report: @Vikings have agreed to terms with QB Matt Cassel on new contract. Source tells @FOXSports1 it's 2-year deal

Matt Cassel's deal with the Vikings is worth $10M for 2 years from what I'm hearing. Houston was a possible landing spot had he not re-upped

Thanks playoffs

Bumped you pretty hard on the rep. Hope it didn't knock any teeth loose. ;)

When he wasn't sitting on the bench looking disinterested during the games in which Keenum played, with very little communication each time Keenum came off the field.

Potential $15 mil contract! Certainly not a Texans deal.

It wasn't Texans worthy.

I'm a little worried that showing interest in Cassell could have revealed O'Brien's hand. It might send the message that he doesn't really believe in the top 3 QB's, which would devalue the 1.1 spot a little.

I'd argue the opposite. Henne signed a similar deal with the Jaguars as Cassell with the Vikings. Many are taking them as mentor contracts signaling they will be drafting QBs of the future and are giving up on Ponder and Gabbert. The contracts are overpriced for backups and talent but structured to be tolerable to cut after the coming season. Kind of a feeding frenzy to not have to start the rookie by a trio of new head coaches.

OK, so where does this leave the Texans in regard to getting a backup "mentor" QB? Who are the FA QB's left that can come in and play halfway decently and mentor whomever the Texans draft? They are starting to run out of options since Cutler, Henne, and now Cassel have all resigned with their teams. I was really thinking they were going to land Cassel. Guess the Texans were just leverage so he could get more money. :goodbad: It's starting to look like they may have to keep Schaub which probably will be hard for a lot of the fans to swallow.:hankpalm:

Carr wore 8, Schaub wore 8, cassel wearing 16 is like both mistakes the Texans made in one easy to boo container.

Keenum wore #7 and I think Yates had like 12 I forget and they both failed so that debunks da #8 myth

but for a while there I thought any QB that plays for us that wears #8 pretty much fails

8 should be banned from Texans history. If we had a kicker that wore 8 he would kick a FG that would not only be blocked, but blocked and caught for a pick 6.

But Sanchez is still out there.

Looking for veteran leadership is common in our situation. The tip, would have been the contract. Less than $5M, it's no big deal, backups are regularly getting paid $3M/yr.

Had they paid him in the $8M~$10M range, he's being brought in to be a starter.

So are the Vikings gonna keep both Cassel and Ponder, who reminds me of Bortles.
