Rookie Starters

texflex513

Rookie
Charles Spencer and Owen Daniels are going to be our starters along with Wali Lundy on Sept 1Oth im assuming spencer will play left tackle...How do you guys think these 3 will do ?

I am a little shaky about the start of the season with a rookie LT going against the Eagles Dline in week one and then Dwight Freeney in week two.

As for the other two, I think they will do fine and either they will have a good game or an unnoticed game.

Don't forget Demeco and Mario, thats 5 rookies starting if i'm counting them all. Says a lot about our draft and what Kubiak thinks of them. If all of these guys are ballers, we'll have a hell of a football team for years to come.

gyea, 5 rookie starters. that's alot. i guess we have the most rookie starters in the nfl starting week 1.

Hopefully it is more indicative of our Rookies excelling at their respective postions, and not a statement against our talent from last year(which wouldn't be saying much)

Right on Sportsfan! Let 'em get started with a little OJT!!!

Yes it does, and it says a lot about last year's roster, too. Around the league there seem to be quite a few ex-Texans getting cut without getting re-signed anywhere. Still waiting for those re-signings of Jerry DeLoach and Todd Wade, for instance. Anyone? Anyone? Tony Banks, maybe? Marcellus Rivers?

(Don't let the door hit ya, Charley.)

I'm also optimistic about this young roster--especially the defensive rookie starters--but I'm also prepared to shrug my shoulders at a slow (possibly 1-3) start. It could very well happen and I don't think it's an indication that the new era is doomed. This team's destined for late-season wins, I think, so I hope that these young guys get a fair shot from the fans during the first half of the season.

Just think, that's six draft picks that will be starting (including the traded 5th for Moulds). That's not a bad draft at all.

well spencer's biggest problem early on is not gonna be giving up the sack so much as holding calls, he has bad(rookie) footwork and so he gets out of position at times and his nature does not allow him to get beat, so he grabs on. depending on the timing, this could end up a huge drive killer. I hope he works on his footwork everyday.

he's the only rookie starter that scares me some.

It doesn't suprise me, this is Kubes team so he is going to go with his players.

Also it shows how bad the talent the last coaching staff had accumulated (also it would only be four if DD wasn't hurt).

Billy Miller & Jay Foreman were cut today by the Aints too. Thank me for makin your point.

B miller was one of my favorites.... i feel bad he did not make the caints roster.

5 starting rookies...it almost like an expansion team...

Does starting a rookie at LT give David Carr more time to prove himself?

I think its great the Texans are starting all of these rookies. As HC Kubiak, GM
Smith, and others have said these guys will make rookie mistakes, and some
of those mistakes may cost us football games. So be it, because IMO we need to be in long-term mode again, which is to say only the most foolish
optimists would think we have a chance for the playoffs this year. That will take a couple of seasons or so.

Spencer plays like a bull. He looked like a "smash mouth" player to me.
I think Lundy is the real deal...time will tell if that is true or not. Daniels won't have to do much to show better than Bruener.

I doubt seriously that he will ever replace the brute blocking that Bruener had afforded us.

I agree CND, bruener was basicly a converted tackle with some agility. daniels is more like a converted reciever. a big one, but without the strength and blocking. bruener was one of, if not , the best blocking tight end in football. we were very fortunate to have him

Like ive said from the beginning..Let Spencer start...It will help him build up

No one liked the thought of Wand starting again, but the short term forecast of the LT position is not much improved. Im inclined to beleive Spencer will become a good LT, but going against all the dominant teams early on is not good news. Lets all hope it doesnt affect him mentally.

I truly do pity Carr the first couple of weeks.

I realized that we are starting 5 rookies on our team this Sunday.

http://www.houstontexans.com/team/depth_chart.php?section=TH Depth Chart

Wali Lundy
Charles Spencer
Owen Daniels
Mario Williams
DeMeco Ryans

Has any other team started so many rookies in the beginning of a season? While I have confidence in there playing ability, I'm concerned over there Shock and Awe status. Walking in to our (full) stadium might make them "Jumpy". What do you think?

So if they read these MB's posting, I want to let them know that we believe in them. They don't have to be a superstar in just one game (they will be good for the season). Mistakes will happen, learn fast and We will win games for a long time.

I can't wait till SUNDAY.:redtowel:

Cause it sure looks like we are. 3 on offense (Lundy, Spencer, Daniels), and 2 on defense (Ryans and Williams). That's gotta be the most in the league right? 49ers have the rookie TE and picked up some starting defensive players in the 1st round. And the Jets are starting 2 rookie lineman at least. But all in all we've got to be starting the most rookies. A lot of people are complaining about the lack of respect, but hey, we're starting 5 rookies and went 2-12 last season. C'mon! That's gotta be a combo of us being not very talented and Casserly giving us one heck of a draft class (gotta give credit where credit's due). I hope Kubiak had a major hand in that, cause that means we're going to have many more good drafts to come.

I think we'll be very lucky to reach 8-8. We're a total different team than I thought we'd be a month ago, and it's just obvious we're still in the "developmental stages". To think we're a playoff team when 5 of our 1st 6 picks are starting, that is a real big stretch guys. Especially with Spencer anchoring LT. There's been times where he's looked great and times he's looked foolish. I'm lowering my expectations and saying we win about 6 games. 8-8 if we're lucky. I gotta be excited everytime the Texans play, but I'm not expecting a winning season... But it doesn't matter when you beat the Cowgirls every time. :)

honestly it's not Spencer that I'm worried about on the end. It's Weigert he's a good RG but RT i'm not too sure about that.

Spencer will be targeted by two impressive ends Jevon Kearse & Darren Howard, given this is his FIRST NFL game you can expect some brreakdowns & miscues, that would only be natural. The real question is how will Carr react and Kubiak make adjustments. This game is squarely on the coaching staff, rookies or not they are bound to be nervous, excited & over reactive. Unlike the last regime, Kubiak (rookie too) must get off to a strong start, build confidence in the players (especially the rookies & David Carr) & continue to get stronger one down at a time, then maybe the Texans will be competitive against a premier franchise like the Eagles :bowser:

I think that the PHI DEs can expect to see lots of TEs and double teams. I dont think Kubiak is going to set or rookie LT up for failure.

In order for him to get better, he needs to face some of the best IMO

From an outsiders perspective...

I'd say it's about 50/50 - last year the Texans stunk, particularly on the OL. You also had a nice draft.

So it makes sense to get the young guys PT, since the likely hood of the Texans making the post season is very small.

Get them experienced now, do it again next year, then in year 3 you guys should be really good.

I guess every single ****ing thread is a Carr thread in disguise...

I used to think we were capable of .500 or better, but with this many rookies starting, I am beginning to have my doubts. 5 or 6 wins is looking more believable. IMO, we lost a lot of depth in the trenches over the past week, and this could really kill us if players are injured.

Then again Brad Hopkins started for the Run N Shoot Houston Oilers and he did fine. Except in the playoffs against Derrick Thomas.

I think Spencer will be okay.

Ryans played in front 90,000 people for 3 years for the Crimson Tide.
Pitt Stadium (Spencer) holds 56,000
Moutainier(sp?) Field (Lundy - West Virginia) seats 63,500
CArter-Finley (NC State - Williams) seats 57,5000
Camp Randall Stadium (Wisconsin - Daniels) seats over 80,000

i wouldnt worry too much about that. i love picking players from big football programs as they just don't have that fear of playing in front of a packed house.

Yeah, but even if you were joking or stirring the pot, or whatever... it is what it is...

hardly a thread goes by that doesn't get highjacked by someone getting a shot in about Carr to one degree or another...

... damn, I'm doing it myself... :blah:

I agree with TK. Spencer has been slow off the ball and his footwork is suspect. You can say all the good or bad you want but films don't lie. Still can't understand why they don't give Winston a true shot at LT. Yes he is a Rookie but he has experience at the spot. Also films don't lie here either and his play during the preseason looked very solid and very quick off the ball.
Was Spencer Shermans pick in the draft???? Is this why he is pushing him at this spot??? One can only guess!!!!!
In the end I hope they all do well and make the team better!!!!

I don't know who you all were looking at, but If you'd rather have Winston protecting Davids blind side you couldn't have really evaluated them....I can honestly say that Spencer is the better lineman of the two at this point...He hasn't played any worse than any other OL in the starting line-up...So if he needs to go, all the rest of them need to go to....And I don't know where this slow off the ball stuff is coming from...

He may have came off slow a time or two, but IMO, he hasn't done it consistent enough for people to talk about it as if it is a problem...I haven't looked at his footwork because I am not sure how you all have fairly evaluated this without an endzone view for the whole game....Or maybe you guys are standing right there with Sherman at the practices...i don't know......I honestly think that people hear things and start repeating them until they become "fact"....I am not going to analyze Spencers play and why I think he is going to be our best OL by next year...Has anybody noticed How Spencer always helps the RB up after the play when he is in ?

Spencer will dominate. I could see him being nervous in his first career start. But that will translate into false starts not, holding calls. He's a beast . Except it and move on. I don't know what tapes you've been watching, Mr. Spencer has very quick feet . What plays did you see him get over extended on ? Inquiring minds want to know . I've got no problems with the rooks. Looking forward to seeing OD in the middle, running free, in the tampa two. gonna be a hoot.

What he said.:cowboy1: One of these days, folks are going to put down the pre draft hype on Duck with mago slaza. I'm glad he is on my team. I think he is going to be a blue chip pro...if he keeps improving. The only way Eric plays is if Wiegert goes down. Weigert has been rock solid all preseason. The only PT Winston will get this year is if Zack goes down, or we're way ahead. Book it. JMHO.

Spencer will dominate...

I have noticed how the board is changing from "Spencer The Dominator" to "Spencer The Rookie Who Needs Protection".

As always, I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between. It does appear it is more comfortable to call for a rookie LT to start than it is to predict how he'll do against top flight NFL competition every week.
