What do you guys think about that? I was just on ESPN Insider in rumor central and they saying that the Texans might get him for a solid #2 WR to be opposite AJ.
 
Does the rumor include something about him being a cap casualty? ... because he's still under contract through the end of '05 and not a free agent.

I don't know how long we'll be protected by the expantion label before we're judged by wins and losses.
 
I think Rod Garder would go great in Houston and he would be a perfect weapon for Carr. He would be a whole lot better than Corey Bradford who is our number 2 and he only had 27 catches for 399 yards and he played in all the games, that's sad. Rod Gardner has had over 50 catches all but his rookie year when he had 46. If the deal does workout and he doesn't want some god awful amount of money, I think it will perfect.

No, but I remember reading an article saying the Redskins were looking to trade him for a mid round pick.
 
In my opinion there are just some receivers who are meant to be #2 receivers. I could give you names, but I'm tired. I will say though that Rod Gardener is 1 of them.

I think that is something we are going to have to look at this offseason, is finding a #2 receiver, wether its in the draft, free agency, or maybe its someone already on the team. But not having one I think is hurting this offense more than you think.
 
Gardener is a pretty good WR, he has decent hands as well as speed. But he does drop some catchable balls.

Funny, and I thought the worst teams in the league got the best players in each draft. Go figure, all those top draft slots hold off for the super bowl teams to take the good ones.

Gardner was a 1st round 15th overall pick. Haven't watched enough Skins football to know the reason, but his yards per catch and yards after catch have gone down every year. That said, he also has caught at least 600 yds each year and had over 1000 his 2nd year. Big red flag (in terms of all the complaining potential) he had 9 dropped passes this year and 8 last year--FYI, AJ, Armstrong, Bradford and Gaffney combined for 8 dropped passes this year. But as AJ has shown that may be something that coaching and hard work can improve.
 
The Patriots must be kicking themselves for getting Corey Dillon from the bad Bengals.
 
gardner is a solid reciever...keep in mind several of his nine drops this year were due to the old QB throwing to him in double coverage and were hella hard catches to make to begin with...if we can get gardner for 3rd or 4th round pick i wouldn't complain one bit but i would hope that unlike the greg robinson deal we actually keep the guy longer than one season
 
Rod Gardner is a very servicable WR. I have a feeling that he will really break out with the Skins this year. It's his contract year and he will want to prove that he's not a bust. The reason for his bad production this year is the Skins pitiful pass offense. The bulk of the passing went to Coles, so it didn't give Gardner enough chances. He would be a good addition for the Texans and I would want a 2nd or 3rd at worst for him.

I don't know how one can look at Gardner's & Gaffney's numbers are see any big difference in Gardner's favor. I can't see a reason why Armstrong can't be as or more effective than Gardner. And comparing a Gardner acquisition to the Pats getting Corey Dillon? Dillon was a 6-time 1000 yard rusher & former Pro Bowler. Gardner's just a guy who was once a 1st round draft pick. Think a younger version of JJ Stokes. Even mid round picks are worth more than that.
 
Gardner isn't worth any more than a 3rd. No way we give up a 2nd for this guy, and I doubt that we pursue him and give up any decent pick. He is not all that fast but he has an NFL body. He is a physical player for a WR.
 
If the don't sign Bradford and do not sign a FA or draft one then we go into the season with Johnson, Gaffney, and Armstrong. Please take off your rose colored glasses and see that that lineup just won't cut it. I am not sure however that Gardner is any better than Bradford, but from what we've seen so far from Bradford we can't be missing much.
 
I dont know if this has been brought up yet, but lance was speculating about the texans going after travis taylor as a secondary wr. though he has underachieved in ball control baltimore, a change of scenery could do him good. i think he is a free agent, and would probably come cheaper than gardner as far as money and draft picks.

who would you rather have?

Taylor: 6-1 210lbs
Gardner: 6-2 213lbs
 
either would be a major improvement over bradford. We need a solid #2 in order for AJ to take his next step toward greatness. And a FA wr would allow us to beef up the O-line through the draft.
 
The Texans need a good #2 that is a legitimate threat. Consider some of the better offenes in the league. Indy has Wayne and Stokley. St. Louis has Isaac Bruce (I am pretty sure Holt is the #1 now.) Marcus Robinson for the Vikings. I just think it is time to move a young speedster.
 
Well, I think the bottom line is simple. Gaffney and Armstrong are set in the slot. We will likely look to replace Bradford with someone. I would be shocked if it is not a speed guy. In today's NFL you need 3 solid WR's because the 3wr sets are the dominant offensive sets in the league. We have two of the three positions ready to go. We just need to replace Bradfords role in the offense.

Taylor had injury problems this year - groin and back - that kept him out of 5 games.

Gardner costs more than Taylor and is in his contract year. One year rental at $1.45 mil instead of commiting three or more years to the guy?

Neither guy makes me go wow, but I think both could be servicable #2's. Maybe a change of scenery will help one or both. They are both playing in offenses that are near the bottom of the league.
 
some of you say that AJ, Armstrong, Gaffney isnt a good line up, well AJ has great speed, Armstrong has good feet and runs great routes, and Gaffney is a good 3rd down reciever. I think our WR core would be better than this year !

Positives: Has the speed and quick feet to suddenly get on top of the press coming off the line … Can leverage, plant, transition and make sharp cuts in his patterns … Changes direction well, using his size effectively to shield the ball from the defender on short-zone tosses … Sits in the zone and uses his strength to compete for the ball in traffic … Has the built-up speed to get downfield after the catch … Flashes a sudden burst, quick spin and excellent balance heading upfield after the catch … Willing blocker with an aggressive attitude, doing a fine job of searching out the linebacker when working in the second level … Still developing his ball skills, but his speed and change-of-direction agility allow him to create big plays, especially when asked to return kicks.
 
Starling impressed me with his speed and quickness last year. But he's still somewhat raw as a receiver (at least he was in early Sept) and I don't think he's going to push anyone for a starting slot anytime soon as he's still behind Gaffney and Armstrong in the pecking order. He's a 4/5 kind of guy right now but he's a good guy to have around because he looks like he has some upside. He's shown Jason Bell gunner ability and that can make the difference between a roster spot or not.
 
Why gamble on Gardner or Taylor.If Carr does not have time whats it matter.
Guys from bad teams will rise above and keep playing(Dillon) or just settle.You don't want a player who settles.
You could trade for Moss but you can't get him the ball.Then what gotta find a 2nd reciever.
 
with the team we are trying to build I dont see us using cap money on another big receiver. we have a well above average receiving core and we are not the colts.. we dont need anything better than that because passing is not our primary strength.

We need to work on our oline.. we need to improve our pass rush.. the WRs we currently have are more than capable of winning game for us.. Andre Johnson himself could carry the weight of our entire passing game if Carr had the time to wait for him to get open.
 
i wouldn't give a first day pick for Gardner unless a favorable contract extension could be worked out, which is never done.

so nothing better than a 4th rounder.

If not look to sign Taylor, or go big bux with Burress.
 
Speaking of tight ends, who is available on the free agent market that would be an obvious upgrade over who we have right now?

And if there are none, then I'd say TE will be a lock to be drafted early.
 
The most obvious upgrade is Bubba Franks, and there are handful of guys who are probably upgrades, Alexander, Becth,
 
Bubba Franks? Can't see him being let go. I'd say trade down, and take Heath Miller in the 1st. And if you can't trade down, consider taking him anyway.

I would say that if the Texans want Heath Miller that they would have to take him at 13. Several mocks that I have seen show him actually being drafted before that point.
 
I agree. If you want Miller you can't trade down to get him. This draft class isn't too special.
 
if you want a reciever look at the C.F.L. free agents or option year players and draft a defensive player. remember defence wins championships, look at the PATS :thud:

Gardner....i dunno,hes not that fast and has been an underachiver so far in his career.

Not many teams in the NFL have a "top #1" TE, only teams that come to mind are SD, Indy, KC, and Bal. All other teams have good or decent TE's. I think if we do take Gardner it should be our 3rd round pick that we got from the Cowboys for Henson.

I don't see anything wrong with Billy Miller. We're still waiting to see what we got out of Joppru. We need to worry about our O and D line first. If we draft TE, wait until round 3.
 
Mel Kiper has the Texans taking Mike Williams from USC with the 13th pick. Also Gardener is a cancer. He has been benched several times over the last couple of years from running bad routes and complaining.

I believe we draft one at 13 or go with what we have!! I love Derrick Armstrong!!
 
If we are going to trade a draft pick for a reciever, why go after Rod Gardner? As far as I'm concerned he is an underachevier. Could become a solid #2 but nothing more.

If we are looking to trade for a receiver, why not do something like the Jets did with Justin McCareins and get a young, talented receiver who can grow into the position. No names come to mind, but an idea to think about.

As far as TE's in this draft are concerned, after Miller there is no much left to really drool at. Alex Smtih from Stanford might be a decent 2nd round pick, could slip into the late 1st. I think Miller could be picked in the 8-10 range. If we want him we will have to maybe draft up a couple of slots, or hope and pray he falls to us. After that, you can pick and choose who you want.

Basically they are trading for him to be a number 2 WR and probable would not give anymore than a 4th or 5th round pick...BTW, I think he has played better than Bradford over the last couple of years.
 
Gardner would be a good #2. However the O-line must be fixed or Carr could have AJ, Moss, T.O. and not be able to get the ball in their hands. That being said, Gaffney and Armsrong are our slot receivers, not our #2 WR, so we do need a good #2 WR, possibly we could take one to fill that need in the draft this year in the 2nd or w/ one of our 3rds. That way this WR could be groomed while we fix our O-line and Gaffney could be our 2 for a year (or he could beat out Gaffney). And if Gaffney proves himself as a legit 2 then we'll have another receiver in our arsenal to go along w/ AJ, Gaffney and Armstrong (still have starling/thomas). I would only want Gardner or Taylor at a discount rate. O-line/D-line #1 priority for FA/draft. Also need a tight end to take pressure off the outside WR's and who can be adequate at blocking.
 
I think a TE is the way to go. Either in the draft or with Bubba. As far as a #2 receiver, between Gaffney, Sloan Thomas, Armstrong, and Starling we should be ok. But an improved D-line and O-line should be our main focus.
 
i think joppru will be a deciding factor in the draft as well as free agency. joppru offers both receiving skill and blocking skill and i believe just having him on the field and establishing himself will make our offense better. personally i would rather see us pass on franks.

i read an article that said the bucs also are interested in rod gardner. i believe they have 11 picks in this draft and could make an offer to the redskins.

As far as Joppru goes, after 2 years of IR the odds are so stacked against him right now, and he is on the wrong side of medicine and history, that the Texans would be foolish to think he could be the answer to the problems at TE, they have to have some sort of contingency plan, even if its a Itua Mili from Seattle, but the current group are not going to cut it.
 
The 2/28 update of ESPN Insider's Rumor Central has the Texans removed from the Interested Team column next to Rod Gardner. They(the Texans) have been on the list since Gardner's name first appeared on Rumor Central about a month and a half ago...

I think that he would be the ideal #2 WR option because he would come cheap, and has shown more than just flashes of his talent...
 
So supposedly he will be a june 1st cap causualty and has been rumored to be cut all offseason. If he is do we take him as our number 2? at this point he is an improvement over bradford and Mathis is still at best a year out from competing...
