NFL.com wire reports

DAVIE, Fla. (May 19, 2005) -- Ricky Williams is discussing a comeback with the Miami Dolphins, coach Nick Saban said.

Saban acknowledged holding recent discussions with Williams, whose sudden retirement stunned the Dolphins shortly before training camp began last season. He would not divulge specifics of the talks, but has long said he was open to the prospect of Williams returning.

Williams rushed for 3,225 yards and 25 touchdowns in his two seasons with the Dolphins.

"Ricky still seems to be very, very interested in coming back," Saban said. "As I've said before, the things that we discuss, we've decided not to talk about publicly. I think that I can safely say that you all know about his situation as I do."

Leigh Steinberg, Williams' agent, didn't immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Williams, who led the NFL in rushing in 2002, still owes the Dolphins millions for breaching his contract by unexpectedly retiring.

After quitting the Dolphins, the former Heisman Trophy winner later acknowledged he failed drug tests and faced a suspension for testing positive three times for marijuana.

"There are issues that need to be worked through," Saban said. "We're all in the process of evaluating those issues before it is resolved."

If Williams returns, he likely would have to wait until July to un-retire. Otherwise, he would face a one-year suspension for his violations of the NFL's substance-abuse program. Williams will still face a four-game suspension for failing a third drug test for marijuana last July, right before he retired.

Right now I don't have any doubts about Ricky Williams playing football again. I think it almost goes without saying that he's going to play again somewhere. I sort of dread the "Should the Texans get Ricky Williams" posts that will come once he returns to the league but then a lot of teams are going to be getting that on their message boards. Everyone who doesn't have a legitimate, proven franchise back is going to hear it from their fans on this.

I'm curious about this though. What's he going to cost now and what kind of value does a guy with this kind of baggage have? With the Dolphins just drafting Brown you know they're wanting Ricky back to move him. What they get for him will be interesting. Who he goes to will be interesting. There's talent there and tons of it. I suspect somebody's going to get it for a relative bargain.

It would be interesting to read his contract (if) or (when) he signs a new deal to see what sort of "extra curricular activities" clauses are on there.

I believe the only reason (other than money) Ricky is considering going back to the Dolphins is because Ricky has always been about college football and Nick Saban can bring that kind of atmosphere kinda and Saban will also make sure the offense isn't only going to be Ricky 70 out of 80 plays.

By the way my new nickname for Ricky is Harry Potter. Harry (beard) Potter (his habit).

Sounds like he will be playing somewhere:

The agent for Ricky Williams said Friday the retired running back "absolutely" will report to Dolphins training camp in July.

"Ricky's made the decision he wants to play again," Leigh Steinberg said.

Asked when Williams can be expected to make a final decision about returning to the Dolphins, Steinberg said: "He has. He's expressed his desire to play this year."

Of course he has a bunch of work while he is suspended to get back into playing shape:

The online report also said Williams weighs 195 pounds — about 30 pounds lighter than he weighed in his last season with the Dolphins. Steinberg didn't dispute the player's reported weight.

I have always liked Ricky Williams.....I didnt like his decision last year to quit but maybe he did need a break....I think whatever team gets him will be getting a steal because Edge or Alexander couldnt even be traded for 2nd round picks....that was mostly because they wanted to be paid bigtime.... I don't think Ricky can expect top RB right away until he comes back and proves he still has it...If he was old Ricky and there were contract clauses I would welcome him on the Texans

I truly think that the Dolphins want to move him, if he does come back. He is worth something to the team. But now they have their RB. So look for him to come back, game 5, with a team like the 49ers.

If I were the Dolphins, I would do what the Saints did when they drafted the Deuce. Bring Ricky back. Give him a lot of p.t. this season. Let Brown take about 1/3 of the carries this season. After this season, find a suitor for Ricky and get a quality pick (maybe a 2nd or a conditional pick if he has a good year). Start Brown in 2006, and go about your business. Not sure this would work, but that would be my plan.

I like that idea and I would do that if Ricky decided to come back. But all of this stuff about Ricky coming back is getting old and I question if he is really ever going to come back.

so anyone know when ricky will be inducted into the Jack A** hall of fame ??? :dangit:

No, but I'm sure he'll be a first ballot pick.

Also, at 195, he'll have a verry hard time playing, 195lb rb's are a thing of the past in the NFL. And if he gets back up to his playing wieght this season, I'd have to recomend the man take a little test.

Another steroid assumption? FANTASTIC. Not to mention the NFL already has a decent steroid policy in place.

Professional athletes know just a bit about their bodies, you know? It's extremely easy for an athlete to put on 20+ lbs in 4 months. It's not like this guy totally shrunk like Kyle Turley during his time off. He dumped 20-25 lbs. Very easy to add back.

Dude, get real, NOBODY adds 20+ lbs of muscle in 4 months without help. It would probably blow your mind to find out the truth about professional athelets and steriods, if they want to take them, they will. Besides that, if he'd quit playing football just so he could keep smoking weed, why wouldn't he take those too?? Also, yeah, from 235 to 195, in less than one year, that is totaly shrinking, that's not 20-25 lbs, that's 40 lbs. He went from big powerback, to cornerback.

To be honest the way he desserted that team i dont know why a single one of them wants him back. To leave the military you could do hard labor but since football is more important maybe we should do some kind of hard labor or death penalty for desserting a football team

I can't imagine which team would actually take him on ... hopefully our Texans can push themselves away from the table with this *****. His only motivation for returning is $$. No drive to be a good player, just to draw a paycheck. Let some other desperate team take him. DD is gonna be fine for us. Frankly I can't understand why alot of us are ready to run DD outta town. Last time I checked he totaled 1000+ yds. every year even with injuries sitting him down. I mean what RB in the league is injury-free anyhow?

Ricky Williams is a spoiled, selfish little boy in the body of a world class
athlete. He walked out on his teammates last year just like he's walked out
on the children he has fathered with multiple women.

A. As I've stated in other threads, its extremely easy to add 20+ lbs in 4 months. ESPECIALLY when your body has already held that weight for an extended period of time.

B. 235 lbs?? It's like you are trying to educate me on one of my favorite players. Find me one site that lists him at 235 for me, thanks.

C. "Besides that, if he'd quit playing football just so he could keep smoking weed, why wouldn't he take those too??" L-O-L!! Why stop there? I hear there are Rumors of Ricky huffing paint, while blowing snow, shooting some H up in one arm and 'roids in the bum all at the same time. Well, you know why....because all marijuana smokers do every other drug in the book...I mean, whats stopping them?

20 pounds in 4 months really isnt a lot. Break it down, 20 pounds divided by 16 weeks. It is 1.25 pounds a week. I put on 10 pounds in the past month and half and all I did was add a protien bar to my diet.

Little hard to find since his playerpage has been taken off most sites due to his retirement. When playing, I have definitely seen him listed at 235 lbs on some sites. Here is an article from a few months after his retirement listing 235 lbs as his playing weight--there are a bunch of things like this out there.

The 5-foot-10 Williams weighs 210 pounds, about 25 fewer than his playing weight.

In any event, doesn't seem like he should have much of a problem getting back to a playing shape if he commits now.

and a couple of his cards that list him at 5'11 225...

Never remember him ever being listed at 230, let alone 235, especially figuring he got even bigger going from NO to MIA...

Actaully they made him loose weight coming into Mia, I had seen him listed as heavy as 240-245 playing in NO.

As for as gaining 20 lbs without steroids, yeah, possible, but gaining the weight and keeping the speed is the question, that's the part that catches them. Weight, is weight, and you gain that much weight that fast, and it slows you down. That's why you see these highschool runningbacks coming out of highschool at 190-195, and it taking them 4 years to gain 20+ lbs and keep that speed. But with the roids, they get biger and faster at rapid rates. As for as the leagues steroid polocy??? Look around at the obvious, David Boston should've been kicked out of the league a long time ago.

That could be a dumb thing to get written up about, but then that depends on what way you were talking about it.

ehhhh I was talking about the smith deal and my teacher doesnt know about the whizzinator and he wasnt one to care about explinations...Fiddy has seen him, he's kind of "flamboyant" if you will...and he didnt like us talking about it in class

Sounds like an unreasonable teacher, kind of sad. I always felt that my best teachers were the ones that were willing to discuss news and the world outside of school with the students. Their's a lot more to teaching than just what's in that book, unless they're college professors ofcourse, then their's just too many people all that stuff.

Just wanted to point something out. I entered the army in 1985 at 152 pounds. I went to basic training and AIT (MP school at Ft McClellen Alabama) which combined took exactly four months (almost to the day) to complete. I walked out of there weighing 185 pounds.

I gained 33 pounds in four months. I ate like a horse and ran constantly. I lost pretty much every bit of baby fat on my body and never went anywhere near a set of weights. You are wrong here.

Agreed, you guys forget this isnt Bonds we are talking about at age 40. This is a guy who still is in his prime pretty much.

Gaining two pounds a week isnt hard, especially when you have been that big for almost 10 years.

Tiki Barber (200 lbs) - 1518 yards
Clinton Portis (205 lbs) - 1315 yards
Warrick Dunn (180 lbs) - 1106 yards

Who says you have to be 225 lbs to produce? Would it be insane to think he could put on 15 lbs and play around 210 lbs before October 9th (his projected return date)?

Plus, they've got Ronnie Brown. What's the rush on Ricky gaining his weight back so quickly?

Very true.

Ricky Williams has gotten his weight up to 215 pounds, but the bigger issue is that Williams and the Dolphins appear headed toward at least one season together, assuming everything goes as planned.

Moreover, the running back likely will get ample opportunity to prove himself after players report to training camp July 24. That's because running back Ronnie Brown, the No. 2 overall pick, probably won't report on time.

Link

Ronnie may want to consider where Phillip Rivers spent last season after his hold out.

I thought Ricky would have been suspended for a year or a large number of games based on drug testing before he retired??? So what happens to that?

Vinny said:
I think he has to sit for 4 games.

That was the deal they were going to cut him last year when his "retirement" was supposed to be treated as another false positive making him miss the year. He may miss 4 games, but then again we may see a deal since he "missed" all of last season--like maybe he misses four pre-season games.

I just want to take this opportunity to point out how Ricky has gotten a bad rap. We're so quick to call him "selfish" and "money-driven" when for most of his career he has proved opposite. Remember how he stayed in college through his senior season, and then returned the next semester to finish his degree? Remember the first contract he signed where he didn't ask for the big bucks but instead asked to be payed based on his performance? These attributes are rare in athletes of today. He made a mistake - and maybe it could be called selfish - but it was selfish for personal reasons not monetary ones. I think it's definately forgivable and shouldn't be the distinguishing mark of his career so far. If Ricky say's he can play, the boy can play.

I'm sorry Haams but even though I see your point I have to think that quitting the NFL because you can't lay down the smoke when you're at the height of your career is one of those acts that do go on to be the distinguishing mark of your career. That's just the way the cookie's always gonna crumble.

This time next year when the Ricky Williams trade show is going on (And Al Davis is going to win that baby, you just wait and see) I'm sure nobody is going to let Ricky's little weed fixation stand in the way of giving him serious consideration. Even Charlie Casserly is going to consider adding Ricky Williams to the Texans.

I know a large number of people think Ricky Williams has zero chance of ever being a Texan considering his recent case of "Reefer Madness" (What else do you call walking away from 8 million dollars?) but in the face of his kind of talent everyone who doesn't already have a proven franchise running back is going to mull it over. Casserly will consider it and decide the price is too high for the risk involved but he will be tempted.

Ricky will get a much better than fair shake for the rest of his career despite his "mistakes" so don't feel bad for him. He will forever be known as the dope man though. There's just going to be no getting around that.

...and yeah, now that I think about it deep down inside I'd take a chance on Ricky Williams. I think the last year and the prospect of having to give back that much money gave him a well needed jolt of reality. Ricky's always going to be a little on the weird side but I think he's had his moment of clarity.

We're talking about a back with monster talent who's got exactly 5 years of NFL wear and tear on his body. He's had a year off and he's going to get light work this season. I think he'll get carries but the Dolphins need to find out what they've got in their new kid plus I am positive that they're going to trade Williams next season if they can get a good offer. They won't want to break him and lose the chance to move him. He'll get just enough carries to demonstrate that he's still Ricky Williams.

Unless Brown busts on them.

You're right Herv, and it's too bad. I think bud played a small role in his decision but it's what the media latched onto.

Williams cleared to report Sunday to Dolphins
By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer
July 19, 2005

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has been cleared by the NFL to report Sunday with the rest of the team for the start of training camp, a year and a day after he abruptly retired.

The league's 2002 rushing champion decided to seek reinstatement after sitting out last season. He still faces a four-game suspension at the start of the season for violating the NFL substance abuse program.

``We've taken the steps necessary to ensure an on-time arrival, and he's excited about rejoining his team,'' said Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg.

The NFL cleared Williams to report on the first day of camp without incurring a further violation of the drug program, league spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday. Williams acknowledged shortly after retiring that he failed drug tests and faced a suspension for testing positive three times for marijuana.

Steinberg said Williams studied holistic medicine at a school in northern California from October to April and finished the first year of a three-year program, then spent April at a yoga center in India and became certified as an instructor.

``Both emphasize natural methods of healing and are opposed to the use of drugs and alcohol to alter consciousness,'' Steinberg said.

After retiring, Williams lost more than 20 pounds on a vegetarian diet. Steinberg said his weight is back above 215, still below his listed weight of 226 on the 2004 preseason roster.

Williams rushed for 3,225 yards and 25 touchdowns in two seasons with the Dolphins. He informed coach Dave Wannstedt of his retirement plans last July 23, one week before the start of training camp.

A court later found the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner in breach of contract by retiring, and ordered him to repay the team $8.6 million. The team has not yet sought to collect the settlement, and new coach Nick Saban offered Williams another chance to play for the Dolphins, who begin workouts Monday.

``Ricky and coach Saban seem to have established a very good rapport in the past several months,'' Steinberg said.

I dunno...does this mean that once Williams is eligible to play after his 4 game suspension, Ronnie Brown is back to being a bench warmer like he was
at Auburn ? Whoa, I don't care if it was a weak draft, #2 overall is a huge price to pay for a substitute RB.

Ronnie Brown is supposedly holding out...

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Running back Ricky Williams reported to Miami Dolphins training camp on Sunday morning, nearly one year to the day after he told the team he was retiring from football.

Williams, driving a blue sport utility vehicle, arrived at the team's training facility around 8:45 a.m. He did not comment to reporters waiting outside the complex. The team's first formal training-camp media availability is scheduled for Monday.

The 2002 NFL rushing champion decided to seek reinstatement after sitting out last season, saying at the time he'd lost the urge to continue playing. Williams faces a four-game suspension at the start of the season for violating the league's substance abuse program, yet likely will be able to play in preseason games.

Forgive? Forget? Good? Bad? Thumbs up or thumbs down. Curious to know what my Texans' friends think about this character. I'm thinking, dude made a mistake. Will he come back and be an asset or will he be a freakin' side show?

Maybe this is just me but I would not have brought him back in the fold. I give a person one chance to make a fool of me. If it happens again, the Dolfins are to blame.

what is bad about the dolphins situation with Ricky, is that he really messed them up.. quiting last year and NOW deciding to come back..If he made up his mind earlier.. who knows.. Mike Williams, troy williams, braylon edwards, at WR... or got Pacman jones, rolle or trade down to gain extra picks then got dJ or rogers,merriman.. etc etc.

we'll give up our extra 3rd rounder for ricky ..just to get him back to Texas and to take him off their hands :heh:

Anyone seen Ricky play yet? I am watching the repeat of the Fins Bucs game and Ricky looked pretty darn good in the first offensive series...
