rice to houston?

Nebraskatexansfan??

Practice Squad
I would like to see Jerry Rice come to the Texans. Opposing defenses will either ignore him or pay lots of attention to him. Either way it will turn out good. If they ignore him he will get lots of catches and make David Carr's job easier. If they pay too much attention to him either Johnson or Gaffney will get open. Im probably crazy but i want to know what you think.

He should have retired before he went to Oakland...he can't play at the same level anymore and wouldn't be a starter for the Texans...even the greatest has a limit...MJ met his.

Armstrong is a better wr at this point. There would be no reason why he would even get a shot here. He certainly isn't the speedy #2 everyone keeps on saying we need. Plus he has always played in the west coast offense we don't run that here.

Actually Armstrong is not a better WR at this point. You saw him in Seattle when he had the chances, he made plays, he had 1 big game and showed he could still catch it deep and jump for it. Armstrong could develop to be better than Rice is right now, but as far as it goes this moment, hes not.

That guy can still play. And I would love to see the living ledgend in a texans uniform. In matchups against a nickleback I will take rice any and every time. He would be worth a Mil simply to give AJ some pionters. He went to Sea to help their young WR's. Let's invite him down south and let him help our's.

I wouldn't mind seeing rice if he signed for the league min. for leadership purposes only. As of right now he is a shell of the player he used to be and has been living off his name the last couple of seasons. Think about it he was kicked out of the retirement home (Oakland), that should of been a sign that he needed to retire. Also, the first half of the season Armstrong proved that he could play and made a impact in quite a few games. He's also a hell of a lot younger which means he's only going to get better, while rice is only going to get worse. So ya Armstrong is better than Rice. I know that might be hard for some to hear, but thats what happens when legends stay to long. Next year if Rice does decide to play, he is only going to be a year older. When's the last time yall saw an over the hill player make a difference on another team. Emmit didn't do it, Eddie G. didn't do it, and Rice won't do it either. We are a young talented team, the last thing we need is to start signing old players that keep our young ones from gaining experience. With all that said I think Rice could be an excellent wr coach. If he doesn't want to leave the game then thats what he needs to do, I just think his playing days are over.

Positives : Living legend and one of the best route runners and hands guys in the biz.A solid 3rd down or possesion receiver.

Negatives: a shell of the player he once was limiting his minutes to more production and possesion roles. Lack of breakway speed.

How many times the last 2 years have you seen the offense sputter on third down and 5 or more because Andre is double covered and a bullet, quick hit or over-the-top catch is too mutch for Gafney, Armstrong or Bradford to handle? Yea David can make some better throws too and better reads - but I saw a whole lot of dropped balls. IMO We dont have that possesion receiver so many old Super bowl teams used to rely on - IMO Having that go to guy when your burner #1 is covered is always a necessary part of a good offense and this is where Jerry's experience and his hands would make the biggest difference. Also as the other posters have mentioend hsi skills as a teacher and veteran leadership would be a nice addition to the mix IMO and could help mold the future of the receiving Corp group we haev into a solid group for years to come. No, he doesnt have the speed he used to - but his cuts, routes and hands make a huge difference in possesion receiving. In the red zone he is also Dynamite and thats where I think he could be the most benefit to us as a guy in the clutch who would be the hands guy to go to in the endzone when Andres side doubled up. His job is to catch the ball and thats one job I think he knows how to do better than just about anyone else.

my 2 yards worth

no on rice, if somehow we signed him, and he made our roster... i know i know, ist jerry rice, he should make a the roster... jerry wouldnt be able to do much... he doesnt have the breakaway speed, cant jump as well as he used to... he relies strictly on two or three routes now that he uses, and even using those, has a hard time breaking the CB off... Jerry had one good year after he left the niners, and now he is done... hang em up jerry, your reputation is all you got left now.. which is very very good i might add

I hope JR just retires. But, just for kicks, we were to sign JR... I don't think AJ would give up his number for him. At least I'd hope not. Give JR should get number 81. That should make him feel really good. My hat's off to one great wide receiver. May he have a happy retirement.

no way we sign rice, i saw him on nfl total acess befroe the super bowl and he was hinting that last year was problably his last season. He had a good career and is problably one of the best WR of all times, but he has nothing to offer houston even if he was to come here !

Jerry Rice a Texan? YES! What was painful to watch was him standing on the sideline while his teams were struggling. When he was in the game, they seldom threw to him. What were these "offensive gurus", Norv Turner & Mike Holmgren thinking? Some say he is washed up. Why not throw the damn ball to him and find out? :hmmm:

So what if he isn't a starter, or if he isn't the speed guy he used to be? And, it doesn't matter what kind of offense is employed. Just throw the ball to him, he'll probably catch it. It isn't fair to compare wr's to rb's. What he lacks physically, he can make up for with savvy. Rice has probably forgotten more about football than clowns like Randy Moss will ever know. And, if he only runs one route well, that's one more than many receivers today. You won't see Jerry Rice run an 8-yard pass route on 3rd-&-9.

I think JR has a lot to offer another team. He just needs to find a head coach who has a clue!

I'd take rice as a WR coach but not a player.. As great as he was, he isn't the same player as he was. Defensive backs are younger ,stronger and faster now, while rice is still in good shape..Father Time is calling.. Rice doesn't strike fear in DB's anymore.

Very well said . Jerry needs to hang up the cleats and if he wants to stay in football he can head to the booth like all the others have. Maybe he could be a good receivers coach somewhere .
