"Report: NFL eyes more Thursday play"

The NFL may add additional Thursday night games in the future, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the league's strategy, reported Tuesday that the league is weighing selling a second slate of Thursday games to a media outlet to pair with its existing 13-game slate on NFL Network.

The league isn't discussing specific terms with any media outlets, nor have any formal offers been exchanged, according to the report. But the person told the Wall Street Journal the NFL is disappointed the Thursday night games on NFL Network haven't had better ratings.

The league's prevailing thought, according to the report, is that frequent Thursday doubleheaders could generate more interest.

Another option reportedly includes moving some Thursday night games from NFL Network to another outlet.

The NFL also won't limit itself to national cable sports networks as potential partners, and will consider online outlets, including Netflix and Google, the person told the Wall Street Journal.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, however, denied Wednesday though his Twitter account that the NFL was considering Thursday night doubleheaders.

I just am not a fan of thursday night games

Same here, Wolf. I guess the NFL is shelving the 18-game season for now (as long as they get their preseason dollars, why not?) and have turned their attention to getting more income via the Thursday Night scam.

We all know the NFL is hurting for cash :sarcasm:. I'm surprised they haven't entertained the idea of PPV more vocally.

I must say, I enjoy having a random NFL game to watch Thursday night. At the same time, I never want to be the Texans, so I guess I'm kind of against it. I also don't know if I can handle a double header; that's just too much on a school night.

Another Thursday Night game sounds exciting but I'd rather they play it on Friday Night. Another nationally televised game we can watch. What's the point of playing it at the same time as the other Thursday Night game? They would challenge each other for ratings.

From the article.....

It might be the baseball terminology for "doubleheaders" coming out in me, but it sounds like they want two games back to back as opposed to them playing concurrently.

I could be wrong. I just sounds like the NFL wants more exposure and better ratings per game so they are thinking something like a game at, say, 6:00pm central time and then a second game at 9:00-9:30 central.

If they run concurrently I don't think it makes much sense either.

Also, I don't know if it's a written or an unwritten rule/law, but Fridays are for High School Football, and Saturdays are for College Football. And even if it is unwritten, NFL probably doesn't want to compete against its farm system that has popularity of its own and keeps the sport as a whole popular.

The players certainly don't like playing on Thursday. Read an article earlier this week that said it's hard on the body, that they are just getting around to feeling better by about Thursday and that having to go full tilt on a Thursday is just brutal. As a result, there's been quite a few sloppily played games this season on Thursday, according to the article.

And with the whole "player safety" thing being front and center these days, I'm somewhat surprised they're talking about moving more games to Thursday.

Me neither. The quality of football in these games has been terrible, and they will wind up shortening careers to pimp their network.

You just can't get back to full speed in 3 days and these guys are killing each other as it is every Sunday.

The union has got to push back on this, if its even feasible.

I hate Thursday night NFL. You can't tell me the NFL is so concerned about concussions and injuries when they push for this and longer seasons. Plus, one of the things I like about the NFL, and football in general, is the fact that it isn't every day, and what days there are is very formulaic for high school, college, and pro (and junior high, for those of us parents who went through that phase).

Neither am I. It's too much. Sunday & Monday is enough for me.

Same here. Obviously the nfl has never heard of the concept of 'leave them wanting more'. The only Thursday games I have any interest in are on thanksgiving. Aside from those I really don't give bleep.
