will file relocation papers to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, according to sources familiar with their thinking. After a year of planning, debate, and bold action, after many years of a sub-par stadium option in Oakland, the Raiders have made a firm decision on their future.

The stunning move, one that should be made official in the coming days, is expected to add a new city to the NFL's ever-changing landscape. The Raiders would need 24 votes from the league's owners to formally make the move, a vote that will come this spring.

The city of Oakland has made no progress to keep the team, sources say. It has not come up with a stadium proposal that league or independent sources believe is credible. At this point, it is only a matter of time before they officially leave.

This decision comes on the heels of -- but not directly related to -- the Chargers' swift move from San Diego to Los Angeles.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said "if the (Raiders) decide that they can't make it work in Oakland and they decide that they want to file for relocation, then their window is from when they get eliminated from the playoffs to Feb. 15." They will file before that window closes.

There are still questions, including whether or not the Raiders do the deal for the $1.9 billion Las Vegas Stadium project with the help of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson or not. That was the original plan -- the Adelson family would contribute $650 million, the Raiders would contribute $500 million, and there would be $750 million in Clark County hotel room tax revenue. They have not yet come to terms.

Earlier in December, the Raiders presented a plan to NFL owners to finance the stadium with the help from Goldman Sachs advisors. Either option would work.

But the Raiders do hold the Adelson family in the highest regard for everything they've done to advance the project, and it would not be where it is without the family's help. The Raiders would acknowledge that.

When the Raiders officially file, the league and its owners will begin a process that should take several weeks. The membership just went through a similar process before the Rams moved to Los Angeles and this one will be familiar.

The filing would include a statement explaining the Raiders' decision, then potentially words from Goodell. There would be committee meetings to analyze the move from all sides, then a vote of all the owners. Between the analysis, vetting, and discussion, it's likely it would take about 4-6 weeks.

That would set up a vote of the owners to send the Raiders to Vegas during the late-March league meetings in Arizona -- with 24 votes needing to pass. The other option would be to call a special league meeting, which doesn't appear likely.

As for the support from the room of owners, it's described as making progress and gathering momentum. There isn't nearly the opposition some anticipated originally. And it continues to build, with some of the most prominent owners vocally in favor of it.

No sources would estimate a vote count, but it's headed in the right direction.

Davis has said publicly that even if the team moves, he plans on playing for the next couple seasons in Oakland while his new stadium is built. After that, pending the vote from the owners, it's off to Vegas, baby. Vegas.

Raiders should be in LA. Chargers should be in SD. Rams should be in STL.

This whole thing has been a disaster on the NFL's part.

Got JJ?
ESPN radio says it looks like it might happen. But then again, the same guy was arguing FOR Mark Sanchez (in terms of playoff history) just minutes before..so....

Btw, the lazy title of the article sucks. I don't think Vegas would want Oakland to come to town and live there. Maybe the Raiders, but I think Las Vegas would take up arms to keep Oakland out.

intended to bring the NFL’s Oakland Raiders to Southern Nevada.

In a statement issued late Monday, Adelson said his family “will no longer be involved in any facet of the stadium discussion.”

Adelson said he was surprised by the Raiders’ submission of a proposed lease agreement to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority on Thursday, noting that it has “sent shock waves through our community.”

“It was certainly shocking to the Adelson family,” the statement said. “We were not only excluded from the proposed agreement, we weren’t even aware of its existence.”

A source close to Adelson said that when Raiders President Marc Badain and Executive Vice President Dan Ventrelle were making a presentation to the authority board, team owner Mark Davis was in Adelson’s office negotiating with the family.

“In addition to being discouraged by the surprise submission, I was deeply disappointed for the disregard the Raiders showed our community partners, particularly UNLV, through the proposed agreement,” Adelson’s statement said.

Sections of the proposed lease place restrictions on scheduling and field markings for UNLV football games. From the proposal’s inception a year ago, the stadium has been billed as a home for NFL games and the Rebel football team. In addition, it would stage major concerts, high-level soccer matches and other events too large for existing Las Vegas arenas.

“It’s clear the Raiders have decided their path for moving to Las Vegas does not include the Adelson family,” Adelson’s statement said. “So, regrettably, we will no longer be involved in any facet of the stadium discussion.”

Adelson said “while this is not the result my family was hoping for, I am very appreciative of the countless people who have given considerable time and energy to this process, especially so many of our elected officials who have made this a top priority for Southern Nevada.”

Calls to Davis and Badain were not immediately returned Monday.

‘VERY DISAPPOINTED’

Clark County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak, a supporter of the bid to bring the Raiders to Las Vegas and to build the stadium, said he was stunned by the turn of events.

“Very disappointed, very disappointed,” Sisolak said in a telephone interview.

He later issued a statement praising the Adelson family’s efforts.

“We would not be as close as we are to having an NFL franchise in Las Vegas without the initiative and leadership of Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson and their team,” the statement said. “I sincerely appreciate the time and effort they all have contributed to this project and I remain hopeful that we will see our NFL dream come true.”

The Raiders have filed an application with the NFL to relocate the team to Las Vegas. NFL owners are expected to vote on the request in late March.

Earlier this month, team representatives told the Las Vegas Stadium Authority board the stadium’s construction would be financed with Goldman Sachs — with or without the Adelsons as partners.

Under the dome’s initial financing plan, the Adelsons would contribute $650 million toward construction, the Raiders would commit $500 million and $750 million in bonds would be funded by a 0.88-percentage-point increase in Clark County’s hotel room tax.

The Raiders reassured Las Vegas officials Thursday that they can finance a proposed $1.9 billion stadium as they have lined up 2 banks for the financing. Boy, the stadium costs just keep traveling to the moon..............and Vegas taxpayers will be passengers for a mere sum of $750 million.:toropalm:

Report: NFL owners to each pocket $53M from team relocation fees
Michael McClymont Mar 27, 2017 3:21 PM
Among the factors involved in the proposal to move the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas, there's this: as part of the NFL's relocation fee, each of the league's owners - aside from the owners of the Rams, Chargers, and Raiders - will make more than $53 million after all three teams have changed locales, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

The Chargers and Rams were charged $650 million for their respective moves to Los Angeles. Las Vegas represents a smaller market than Oakland, however. That smaller size, among other things, means Raiders owner Mark Davis could pay less than half of what his competitors did. His relocation fee is expected to be below $400 million.

The final sum total represents a nice chunk of change for the rest of the league's owners.

Can't blame the Raiders here. Oakland had pretty much a decade to do something and did nothing and Raiders ended up getting a great offer from Vegas.

Yep. The Oilers only played one season in Houston after they announced their plans to move. I would not be surprised to see the Raiders move to a temp stadium in 2018 if things get bad in Oakland next season. While Houston fans acted with indifference and apathy (and the '96 team was crappy), Oakland fans might be a bit more aggressive with their attitudes. Preliminary talks are already happening with UNLV to use Sam Boyd Stadium if they need it, since the Raiders are already planning 2018 preseason games there. I think this is a contingency plan in the event that Oakland becomes a hostile environment for home games.

At least the Raiders get to keep the name and logo, unlike Bud when he basically murdered the Oilers.

All of it really sucks as a football fan, but the reality is profits over fans in this day and age. It is what it is.

Perhaps, but there's some differences between this and the Oilers too.

With a city like Houston, there was never a doubt in my mind that an attempt to get another NFL team was forthcoming. In reality, it happened far more quickly than even I had guessed. That's not gonna happen in Oakland, and everybody knows it. Also, for reasons I can't really put a finger on, a team relocating to Las Vegas (who many folks - including me - view as a positive destination) seems less distasteful than a small (by NFL standards) city in Tennessee that I've never visited, and frankly have no desire to. Bottom line is I see more incentive to continue being a Raider fan than I ever did in continuing to support the team that became the Titans.

It may be that the Oakland fan base rebel in a way that only they could, but it also wouldn't shock me to see them stay far more loyal to the franchise than the Oilers could have ever hoped to see. Maybe they get chased out of town after a year, maybe they re-up for a third year before their LV home is ready. It probably doesn't hurt their cause that the Raiders are widely considered a Super Bowl contender, as to the Oilers who'd gone 9-23 the two seasons prior to their lame duck season.

Oilers fans would have been much more loyal if the Oilers ever achieved anything significant. Championships breed loyalty. That's just the way it is, and that's why teams like the Yankees, Cowboys, Patriots, Bulls, Steelers, etc., have fans all over the place. Everyone loves a winner.

Huge, heartbreaking chokes - and I mean historically epic here *cough*35-3*cough* - breed a discontent that really tests the limits of being a fan. You will never understand if you were not an Oiler fan.

That said, I didn't make the story up. Mark Davis is already negotiating with UNLV for contingency plans. I just reported it on the forum.

Raiders are going to have to look into their draft prospects personal history with a fine tooth comb. It will be a hard place to live during the season and stay 100% focused on football for all but the most dedicated players. Their regional scouts should spend more time questioning the strip clubs around the campuses to eliminate the usual patrons.

Makes me wonder if publuc money is used to pay 53 million to each of the other owners for relocation fee or is public money used just for the stadium..

The more I think about this..the more I feel Vegas is to glitzy for a organization
that was built on being the extreme hard asses of the NFL, Raiders, black hole,
just the whole persona of that doesn't fit what Vegas is about

With that strategy they are likely to see an increase in scout applications. I know I just applied.

.. and then?
May move em faster than they want to....

The landlord of the Oakland Coliseum has been losing money on Raiders games and might force the team out of its current facility before its new, $1.9 billion Las Vegas stadium is ready in 2020.

Contractually, the Raiders only have options to stay at the Coliseum for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. But that leaves open the question of where they will play in 2019.

The answer — for now at least — is probably not in Oakland.....

SA really is perfect for them. Raiders have always had a large Hispanic fan base, and who better than SA? They already have the black and silver colors for the Spurs as well, and their fan base is really passionate and supportive. That would be cool for them to host for at least a year possibly.

Back when there was talk of moving the Jags I thought they would be perfect for SA. Jaguars are native to Texas and pirates are not, at least to the SA area. Jaguars are also kind of huge in Hispanic culture.

But I can see your uniform color point.

Mark Cuban thinks NFL chasing money in Las Vegas will backfire
May 16, 2017, 12:39 PM EDT

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has never hesitated to critique the NFL’s business model, and he has done so again regarding the Raiders’ move to Las Vegas.

Cuban said on ESPN that he sees the NFL’s decision to let the Raiders leave Oakland just because Nevada is willing to build them a stadium is going to be a bad look in a few years.

“Why? There’s just no good reason. It’s no disrespect to Las Vegas, it’s a great city and it’s vibrant. But they’re going to a smaller market, it’s transient, and it’s just another example of chasing every last dollar, and that tends to backfire,” Cuban said.

Cuban famously compared the NFL to fat hogs ready to get slaughtered, and he thinks the league will eventually implode under the weight of its own greed. We’ll see in a few years if an expensive Las Vegas stadium has thousands of empty seats on Sundays, which would suggest that Cuban may be on to something.

I think that the chances of financial failure with two teams in L.A. and one in Vegas are high for at least one of those franchises, if not two, out of the three.

I'm still perplexed that the NFL could leave a 20 year old stadium in St. Louis and nobody seems to question it. That's like the Texans demanding a new stadium in 2020 and then moving in 2023 because they didn't get one. Pure greed by the NFL.

Looks like at least for now, Oakland Raiders fans are attempting to make the best of a bad situation and likely hoping that the talk of the 2017 Oakland Raiders being a legit Super Bowl contender are valid.

The Oakland Raiders’ impending move to Las Vegas may not sit well with local officials, but the fans don’t seem to be holding it against them — season tickets for the 2017 campaign have sold out, Matier & Ross of the San Francisco Chronicle report.

To the surprise of no one, the Oakland Raiders’ move to Las Vegas still doesn’t appear to be going as planned. The Raiders have resumed talks with Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum officials for the first time since the City of Oakland filed an antitrust lawsuit against the team last December, Larry Beil of San Francisco’s ABC7 News reports.

It’s not everyday you see a team re-engage with an entity that once said it “brazenly violated federal antitrust law” in a court filing, but, well, it’s becoming clear that the Raiders need Oakland more than they thought right now. Raiders still looking for a 2019 home Because the Raiders’ stadium in their new home of Las Vegas won’t be ready until the 2020 season, the team has been left to find a single-season venue for 2019 after pulling out of a tentative lease at the Coliseum. You might not have thought finding a venue for two preseason games, eight regular-season games and potentially the playoffs (probably not a huge worry) would be this difficult, but the Raiders have struggled quite a bit.

If Oakland is targeting a franchise for their market, then a new stadium will be the first item on the agenda. Next, finding an organization to move into the new stadium......if it were me chasing a team, I'd focus on the Chargers who may not be gung-ho on sharing a stadium over the long haul.
