Question about our defense...

"The Texans might be in the market for another back in the offseason. They like Domanick Davis, but they would like to have another back to help lesson the load on him. Coach Dom Capers made it a point this week to note that three of the four teams left playing use more than one back. The Steelers have Duce Staley and Jerome Bettis, the Patriots use Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk and the Falcons have Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett. "You need to have two nowadays," Capers said. Look for the Texans to look hard at the backs in this year's draft. The Texans are also hopeful pass-catching tight end Bennie Joppru can play in 2005. He has missed his first two seasons with injuries, including an abdominal problem where the muscle came off the bone. Joppru would give the Texans a threat in the middle of the field in the passing game to go with their good receiving group. "

Maybe Capers should also take note that of those 4 final teams all of them mix up their defensive schemes throughout a game, faking blitzes, disguising blitzes, and the Pats use a 3 man and 4 man front on their defense throughout a game which I wish we could try at least.

i can almost gurantee that we dont spend any big bucks or picks on a RB. Considering our RB is not the problem, we had a decent running game this season, and we have bigger problems to worry about, and i think wells makes a good back up, he was running hard when he was in the games !

I agree with that, and somewhere on here it was said that we would not do anything to our O line and it makes me think we will be concentrating most of our energy on the defense this offseason. I think we need to start on the D line and MLB. I have been thinking about it after watching the games last weekend and we need some playmakers on the D line and in the LB spot and we need some guys that we can mix up schemes and blitzes with, I really want to see us attack opposing QB's and offenses in '05.

yeah we really do need some big play makers on the D-Line. I like robaire smith and he's still young but G. Walker is getting old, and Seth Payne is to injury prone it seems. And any ideas for a big play maker LB. Johnnson out of texas ?

Honestly I think Babin, Wong, and Peek could be playmakers this season. Wong had his best year at OLB last season, Babin has a full season under his belt, and Peek was a monster when he played last season. As far as going out and getting someone in the draft I have no idea when it comes to college ball, as far as FA I think Kendrell Bell would be awesome for us at ILB.

OK, I have been sitting here this past weekend watching the last 4 teams battle it out to get to the Super Bowl and the one thing I notice they have in common is the way they scheme and mix up their defensive play. All of the blitzing, disguising blitzing, faking the blitz and all of the other things they do. I mean New England runs the 3-4 primarily, but on some plays they run a 4-3 if I am not mistaken. What do you guys think if we tried running something like that, I was thinking maybe we could put Smith and Payne/Walker in at DT, and maybe Babin and Peek in at DE, and we could have Sharper at ILB, and Wong and someone else in at OLB. I don't know, maybe I have gone crazy without having Texans football the last few weekends, I am just trying to think of ways we could confuse offenses and give different looks, I mean Capers is supposed to be a master of the 3-4. Maybe he was just waiting for the rookies on the defense to get a full season under their belt in the '04 season, I dunno. Any thoughts or opinions?

yeah peek is a play maker, and babin had a good rookie season. Ya know Polk looked pretty good in the late part of the season when foreman went down. But i think we do have an agressive LB crew, but peek does need to be a starter !

i agree about our blitzing, i dont see us mix it up much, like cross blitzing the LBs our switching to a 4-3 in certain situations. All the teams in the play offs have a much more aggresive style of defense than we do. We always run a Delay blitz with sharper, our have Robinson blitzing off the corner, maybe he figured our D was to young to run those plays, cause he was afraid we'd give up the big play.

You are right, I forgot about Polk, he did do a good job, bottom line is I think Foreman needs to be replaced or someone or something needs to put a little fire in him. I think Peek and Babin at the OLB spots could be an awesome duo in the near future.

That's what I was thinking, also when we blitz, it's always pretty predictable, I can literally see a blitz coming when I watch the games on TV at home.

yeah peek and babin would be a scary OLB duo to have, plus they're both kinda mean and scary looking :hairpull:, and very agressive ! Man i gotta date i gotta go !!! Keep telling em how it is Texan279 !

I thought I remembered us running a 43 certain times throughout the season...Babin would line up at LDE, I don't remember who was playing everywhere else though...

All I recall is Babin's heavily tatted left arm covering half of my TV...

Maybe I'm wrong though...

it depends on the call. sometimes you want to fake the blitz and drop back but other times you want to hold off on it as long as you can. dunta usually blitzes from the nickel where they move him in to cover the slot receiver.

the blitzing and coverages work hand in hand and once capers feels the team is ready he will open things up.

he does play a 4 down lineman somtimes but the DE are not in a 3point stance. im not sure of the situations where he calls that though.

Every time the Texans are in nickel or dime, they have two defensive linemen playing the tackles and two linebackers playing the ends. That's how most 34 defenses operate. Its basically a 43 look, just with different personnel.

Yeah I think the fact that we started three rookies on our Defense this year for the majority of this season is why we haven't seen to many complex looks from our Defense. I expect them to come out next year and perform as one of the best in the league. The only aspect of our D that I am concerned with is our D-Line. Walkers production dropped tremedously this season and we may or may not see Payne return.

Next year we should see Capers open up the defensive playbook a bit more and ad a few new looks.

I thought what they did was put Babin and someone else on the line and had everyone else playing secondary if I remember correctly, like a 2-4-5 kind of thing, I might be wrong though.

yeah i did see that a few times during the season where we had just 2 down linemen, not enough to remember if it was successful, but i'm sure it helped on pass protection. It was prolly only on 3rd and VERY long. Ya know i see new England even during important games bring in 2nd stringers and move players around, it must confuse opposind offenses, maybe capers could try a little of that !
