QB Geno Smith punched by teammate, broken jaw

I assume the NFL will dish out some punishment?
I would be surprised that even if Geno Smith does not file formal charges, the DA will. This is definitely a criminal act. The Bills may have just bought the rights to paying a player that may not see the field for a very long time. No matter what, the League is obligated to come down hard if the Personal Conduct Policy is going to be perceived as has any having any teeth.

I'm kind of glad he got picked up. It sounds like Geno Smith deserved to get punched, and I hate the mentality of the QB being above everyone else in such a team sport. I have mixed feelings about it, but I bet Geno Smith learned a valuable lesson about being a man and about being a leader of men.

Wow, what a shitty guy to have as your leader on offense.

ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark appeared on the "Mike & Mike" radio show Wednesday morning and said Jets quarterback Geno Smith was "smug" about not repaying a debt to teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali.

Enemkpali punched Smith in the locker room on Tuesday, breaking the quarterback's jaw. Smith will need surgery and is expected to miss 6-10 weeks.

Clark, who played 13 seasons in the NFL, said he spoke to players inside the locker room to get various accounts of the altercation. Clark confirmed reports that the altercation concerned a debt for a plane ticket Enemkpali had purchased for Smith to attend a football camp. The debt reportedly was $600.

Clark said during the course of the argument, Smith put his finger in Enemkpali's face and said, "You're not going to do anything about it."

"I've dealt with IK a lot," Clark said. "This guy is really tight about money. He really is. Where as I've seen other players have this happen and kind of just move on from it, he couldn't. A lot of people are saying you don't punch a guy over that amount of money."

Enemkpali, who was released by the Jets immediately after the incident, was scheduled to make $510,000 in base salary this season, per Spotrac, a website that tracks players' salaries.

Clark said he got to know Enemkpali from their time working out together at a training facility.

"It became about the fact that Geno wasn't necessarily apologetic and being in a way remorseful about the money when saying he was going to pay IK back and he didn't," Clark said. "He was rather smug about it. These guys got into earlier on in camp about this money and so the argument continued into [Tuesday]. These guys were in each other's face."

Reading that report, I'm not sure I wouldn't have punched Geno Smith. And he's definitely bigger than me (well, in better shape).

Reading the report, I wouldn't have begrudged IK if he'd pulled a Shark Lavay and chainsawed Geno's car in half.

Is there any video out there yet? The initial "sucker punch" story appears to be a media creation and this is a more typical training camp fight with worse consequences. Certainly not a criminal act as inaccurately described by a clueless talking head.

Honestly I think the Jets put the whole "sucker punch" thing out there to protect Smith. The investment they have mad in him is much bigger than the one they made in Enemkpali so they were always going to back Smith. They probably knew how bad it would look once the whole story got out so they got in front to create some doubt and paint Smith as the victim.

What's most interesting to me is the complete lack of giveas**t by the rest of the Jets players. Geno commands absolutely zero respect in that locker room. To me it seems like the Jets got lucky here. Now they can start Fitzpatrick and not bury Smith at the same time. Fitz is what he is but I guarantee you he is a better leader than Smith. Both guys are going to turn the ball over so give me the one who commands respect over the idiot dips**t every time.

What story are you operating off of? Clocking your QB in the locker room is not a typical training camp fight.

Neither is putting your finger in the chest and face of a team mate. It apparently is a trigger for a violent reaction in some circles. After a day, the stories have been inconsistent with CAUSE being inconclusive. It's certainly not as initially "reported." The very use of the word REPORTED has changed as much as GAY has since I was young. They are Totally different now.

Great, a non responsive off topic soapbox.

Not while playing football or Suh would be in jail.

They weren't playing football. They were in the locker room.

Geno Smith feeling ‘great’ post sucker-punch surgery

Maybe the doctors who operated on Geno Smith’s broken jaw also fixed his arm.

The Post spotted the Jets quarterback completing every pass Saturday during a game of catch with a buddy just two days after he underwent surgery to fix his jaw, which was busted by a teammate in a locker-room brawl.

His cheeks swollen, Smith — who had a dismal 59.7 percent completion rate last season — bragged about his tossing talent in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Whippany, NJ.

“I feel great. You see me throwin’, right?” he told The Post, his speech slightly slurred by the swelling.

He was shirtless and strangely wearing eye-black tape during the casual toss.

He had a message to Jets fans regarding his six- to 10-week layoff: “Get ready for me to come back.”

But it remains to be seen whether his teammates even want him back. While keeping virtually silent about their signal caller, they have been phoning IK Enemkpali, the linebacker who punched him, in droves.

“They called to see how I’m doing and called to check on me,” said Enemkpali, who was cut from Gang Green after Tuesday’s tussle.

Smith’s jaw was not wired shut — surgeons implanted metal plates and screws — but it might as well have been Saturday when it came to answering questions about the fisticuffs.

“No comment,” Smith said.

When the reporter persisted, he said politely, “You’re on private property, and I’ve been nice, but I don’t want to call the cops on you.”

Enemkpali reportedly socked the third-year QB in the kisser in a dispute over a $600 debt.

Smith had pledged to show up at a Texas football camp organized by Enemkpali in July, but backed out after the death of a friend, sources said.

The quarterback never made good on a pledge to reimburse Enemkpali for the cash he laid out for Smith’s air travel, then allegedly taunted the linebacker in the locker-room standoff.

Enemkpali has been picked up by ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan, who now leads the Buffalo Bills.

Geno feeling that pain medication...?

Jets players calling IK "in droves"...?

If you want to "get back" at the Jets because you harbor a grudge, you
don't do it!!! by signing a guy who just punched Geno Smith in the
face and is on the brink of league suspension and criminal charges

you do it? by slowly building up your team the right way...and
by beating them, Ryan knows this is going to backfire and I am
just waiting to hear the explosion at any moment

This locker room stuff rarely gets turned into a criminal deal. The league also usually leaves this kind of thing up to the club. They cut him. I doubt the league, or civil authorities do anything.

Still, this is a 6th rounder. The Bills basically got an extra 6th round pick. He looked decent in their game the other day... still doubt he'll make the 53. It's really a non-story to me. Did Buffalo do it to get at the Jets, or did they take a low risk look at a LB prospect with some pass rushing ability?

Enemkpali was drafted by and played for Rex Ryan last year. Not unusual for him to grab one of his guys.
