RT @OptimumScouting: Just talked to Aldon Smith. Good kid. My guess? He did a poor job of hiding that he knows he's going to Houston.

Though, I haven't seen the Smith comment to put this into context. The writing is on the wall. How disappointing. This almost causes me to lose interest in watching the draft at all tonight. Almost. I guess there's still the 1% chance this is some Jedi mind trick on the part of Rick Smith.

Oh, did I say 1%? I mean, .0000000001%.

There have been plenty of good kids 'told' by an organisation that they will be the pick and it not happen.

Aldon Smith has probably been reading too many mock drafts.

Just been watching Aldon Smith's work at the combine and not impressed at all.

Looks stiff and sluggish especially moving sideways and backwards.

Hope a 4-3 team grabs him to play end.

Not to knock on the armchair QB's analytical skills, but here's the scouting report of Aldon, written up by a very seasoned professional who's been doing this for a long time; and make a living for his write-ups.

And here's a comment specifically on his combine performance:

There's several flaws to Aldon Smith as a football player, but I've never came across a legit Draft Analyst saying being stiff/slow being one of them. In fact, he's top 10 in several credible analysts overall prospect rankings, mainly due to his athleticism.

Btw, I'm not just directing this at you brah, there's several people in this thread saying the same thing; makes me wonder if they have been keeping up with the current prospects or even the draft process. Not like I have been; heck, I've probably seen like a total of 30 minutes total of the entire 2010-11 college football, and none of which included Aldon Smith. Which is why I rely on these credulous analysts, who spend years following these kids up to this point.

Imagine a Darth Vader-esque "NOOOO!!!" coming from me if this happens. Smith has potential, I will grant that. He also is incredibly raw and has a history of injuries. He is a classic boom or bust pick, one that this team cannot afford right now.

You can find credible analysts with many contrary opinions and assesments based on measurables far outside what game tape shows.

I don't claim to be any sort of draft analyst or expert.

I watch a clip of the guy and observe he looks terrible in his backpedal and slow going laterally.

Does he go ok in a straight line and bending a corner sure, but that doesn't always translate to being anything like a reliable OLB.

That's exactly right. Could he be the pick? Absolutely! But there is so much talk about this right now its really weird. So many "inside sources" talking? Screams to me that it'd be cool if some QBs were taken and Smith was selected before us... "because of course we're going to pick him". Watch the draft, it will be exciting! Some team may trade up and get Aldon in front of us with all this talk. :crossesfingers:

Yea, of course it doesn't brah. I still don't get why you made a comment on him being sluggish/stiff from watching combine tapes then, if you don't believe it has anything to do with him translating into a competent pass-rushing OLB in the NFL? Why not make the some comment from watching his past game tapes?

Either way, the scouting isn't base solely on his work at the combine, it's based on his game play on the field during his 1 and 2/3 season in college, and how he will translate over as a professional player based on what they saw.

Cereally, has anyone even watched this guy play before? I'd like to hear their testimony on Aldon, instead of seeing 90% of the post ITT being bias-hatred for this guy from a parochial group.

OLB don't just rush though. He will need to be more versatile than that occasionally.

I predict the Texans will really try to move up but won't so they'll stay put at 11 and pick Robert Quinn.

Ground breaking news Watson. What are you going to tell me next? The QB can't just throw the ball, they have to hand the ball off too?

Pass-rushing OLB is a term he will be coined with because it will what he will be known for (hopefully), not because that's the only thing he can do. That's like saying a rushing-qb needs to be more versatile than just running. It's their specialty, which is why they're coined with that term, not because that's the only thing they can do.

geez man.

Houston Texans select J.J. Watt, DE from Wisconsin.

I believe Cameron Jordan goes #9 to the Cowboys or another team that trades with them. With Julio Jones off the board, the Redskins select Aldon Smith. This leaves Watt for us at #11. If we trade down, even slightly, that opens up Minnesota, Detroit or even a team like San Diego (trade up) to snag him.

Watt will get PLENTY of playing time this season for those worried that he's not a "starter" because of Antonio Smith. Mario will have a banner year this season and sign a longterm contract making Watt-Mario our bookend 3-4 DEs of the future and the foundation of a DOMINANT front 7.

Texans look to add a 3-4 OLB in the 2nd round or trade up to select one. My eyes are on Brooks Reed for a trade up or Sam Acho if we stay put at #42. Ideally, I would then love to add Chris Carter from Fresno St. in the 3rd as an ILB/OLB guy but I'm afraid he won't be available at #73.

When it's all said and done, I expect Smith to possibly make a trade down in the first and could easily see him moving up in the 2nd and/or 3rd.

Well done. Rep your way.

WOW! Nice call. You wouldn't happen to know tomorrow's lottery numbers would you? I'll split it with ya'. :D

OK, nows your chance to show you're a great prognasticator, tell us who you think the Texans take. (Not who do you want them to take!!!)

Bonus Points: Do they trade up, do they trade down, stay in place, and who do they take.

I think we trade back and take JJ Watt. Don't know why it just came to me.

What say you Texans Talkers?????:kitten:

Damn had I not made that trade down crack, I would have have been 100% right instead of 50%.......

Nice! And just to think, that we could`ve gotten Chris Carter in the 5th is still baffeling me. He would add great depth for us at a really thin position.

That's the player I overvalued the most this year, there's always one. I really liked what I read/saw of this guy. Thought the good news was Wade coached him in the Shrine game, he obviously saw something different. Which is all good. I truly think Carter ended up in a great spot in PIT and will become a really good LB. At least we got Keo that Wade coached in the game!!

Ps - I am SO surprised Reed lasted to our 2nd. Thought for sure he'd get snatched up before.

I figured we'd do some movement too but didn't see it being for Brandon Harris. I love that trade big time. I'm really excited about our draft and will be even moreso if we sign a good FA CB !
