Preseason - TEXANS @ New England

Wow. After only four passes and not even a full quarter, we are already applying the Stroud apologists label?

I guess the lines are already being drawn for the Mills only fans and Stroud apologists. Are we also going to create a Christ Junior (CJ) in Cleats label for Stroud supporters? SMH.

Are there really Mills only fans?? He's not good .....

There were a few of us who didn't want to pick Stroud with his numbers against pressure as the #1 issue.

The numbers in a clean pocket were spectacular while the numbers under pressure were disasterous. - a passer rating of ~151 with a clean pocket dropping to ~41 when under pressure.

The results aren't a surprise to me for a rookie taking his first snaps - the pressure is going to be there more often than not in the NFL. He's got to learn how to deal with it - Or else...
I do wonder if that was the intent.

See his response to a broken line and correct his mistakes before the regular season.

At least. I hope that was the plan.

Im not sold on nor against Stroud. I'd be lying if I said his suit didn't make me question his decision making skills.... but... he is... at least at this point our future so I support him and hope the Texans chose correctly.

I don't disagree with your bottom line.

Lets hope he figures it out.

It was just two freaking series in his first NFL preseason game gents. Without the starting line he practiced with last week and early this week.

Why are some of y’all jumping off the deep end. Darn near every rookie freakin quarterback struggled during their first NFL action.

lol Jesus!

Here we go with the Mills only fans. Lol yeah joker he played behind the same make shift oline. But by then the Patriots pulled most of their starting defense out. I guess you didn’t see that huh
Who are these “Mills only fans?” If I’m not mistaken, everyone agreed that Case looked like the best QB on the roster last night. Stroud struggled, no if and buts about it, but no one here said he won’t improve over the next two preseason games. As a matter of fact, we all want CJ to be worth the 2nd overall pick but he definitely has some work to do, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Again, Stroud indisputably had an abyssmal QB rating.........something we hope he does not pattern after in the future. But for those who want to point to the supposed OL poor performance...............

The metric of the QB RATING takes into account all of a quarterback's contribution to a game, including passing, rushing, sacks, penalties, touchdowns, and turnovers. Moreover, each play is weighted based on its "difficulty", the context of the game, and the strength of the opposing defense.

A poor performance by an OL does not play into the QB rating.......only the QB's response to that play.
A QB that does not see any pressure almost always have a better QBR.

If he doesn't, you know he's not the guy.

Within certain context, Mills was close to that definition; he wasn't very good even when not pressured.

But his Int yesterday was not under real pressure.

IMO, CJ didn't handle pressure poorly yesterday.
Brady would not have done any better.

Nope, he had all day to throw on that play, he just made a terrible decision, I wonder if he ever saw the safety?

Had a dump off wide open and an out route to the short side that was a fairly easy completion.

The point is that he was not under pressure.

That was in response to your concern.

In another word, that was just something he dídn't normally do.

You have to understand your audience. They didn’t want the Texans to draft him , therefore they’ll scrutinize the young man every time he makes a mistake.
I'm not even sure he made a mistake there.
It could be Dell's.
Or it could be the coaches not teaching well.

The play design itself wasn't good.
Having the inside receiver stemming right before breakinc inside only helpa draw the safety closer to the action.

The teaching just wasn't there.

He second guessed himself and hesitated before he threw that pass. In his presser he said, “ he should’ve went to his check down”.

I agree the play design wasn’t that good either.

The decision to throw that pass was OK. The WR had leverage on both DBs. It was the type of pass, the timing of the pass, and the placement of the pass that were poor. Had Stroud released the pass prior to the WR break, put some air on the ball so it could not be undercut, and put the ball between the WR and the sideline, it's a 1st down. It's a pass I've seen Stroud make. But he didn't make it in New England.

He also said number two made a good play and he didn’t see him. He knows what he did wrong. It’s too bad that he didn’t get more playing time but I guess two series are about right for a designated starter. Texans in this game followed the script. Perhaps they plan to follow that starter script through the preseason. It could be as simple as that is how they want him to develop based on what they now know about him from TC. Let him take his lumps and be better for it.

I'm sure he knew the easy completion was there, but he wanted the long throw to make up for the sack he took on the previous play. In college he could do that more often. In the pros he'll learn to compromise by taking what defenses give you.

If I were Slowik I would drill Stroud on blitz-beaters and hot reads every day. Rookies need to learn those anyway, but now the word is out that Stroud buckles under pressure. Whether true or not, that's the perception he'll have to confront.

On that sack the defensive lineman came basically unblock. Stroud had no chance at all. The End also whipped the right tackle. That is not on the quarterback at all.

Hey this is a discussion page. I have a theory about CJ. We know Demeco is an exceptional and enthusiastic natural leader. The swarm D says it all. He has even told WA just to use his aggression and attack every play. Don’t worry about anything else. I just get this feeling that he loves the enthusiasm CJ brings to practice. CJ is a jock , a student of the game and loves nothing more than to be with his guys. I didn’t see any Texans games last year due to the SA blackout but my son went to the Titans game and just couldn’t get over how disconnected Mills looked on the sideline. I think Ryans picks up on that, right or wrong. He wants a 24-7 leader from his core players and I truly believe he sees that as championship material. CJ will still have to earn it but I think for now CJ is being posed as the leader of this team and I believe Ryans wants him to feed on that. If true I don’t see how jerking him around builds a Ryans type confident leader.

It's not the sack itself. It's that C.J. lost additional yardage trying to escape the sack moving backwards. Keenum can tell Stroud a thing or two about this, as it was a big issue for Case as a rookie.

Yes. Some still think Mills has not been given a fair shake and should at least have an opportunity to start with this new coaching staff and talent. They are quiet and waiting in the peanut gallery. I've already heard from a couple of co-workers that the Texans should have saved the draft capital, sign Case and start Mills.

The first completion to Collins was discussed. The second completion to Sims...what is it you'd like to discuss? He floated a short completion under some pressure.
And what about when he escaped pressure and picked up positive yards. Actually he did that twice.

And why aren’t you talking about both Sruggs and the RT Guard getting whipped on that sack?

VERY early takes based on last night alone. Take not with a grain of salt, but with grains of boulders -

Homeruns on Dell and Too ' To 'Too 'To 'Too (where does the train end). Both look like impact players and steals.
Encouraging signs from Juice, X Hutch, and Will Anderson but not enough snaps to confirm.
Stroud - bad RT. I mean BAD RT play. Between that, and very limited snaps...he's an incomplete grade for me.
I was happy they took him out before he got smashed like a grape. Then the complaints would really start.

With the LT and RG watching, the RT in a cast, and the backup RT playing LT - it's left to 76 at RT.
76 isn't a starter at this level. He's a borderline roster guy. Showed no improvement from last year.
Once those rosters are cut down, expect the Texans to dip into that pool for a backup swing tackle.

Biggest takeaway on D was tackling improvement. HUGE improvement in that area, especially for a 1st PS game.

Second biggest takeaway on D was run game. Massive improvement shown. Guys playing proper gap control and technique and handling their oline with east.
Other than the last series with Cunningham, the D totally locked down their run game.

Another thing I noticed was overall disciplined play for a PS game 1. Very few penalties, no burning TO's because guys were lined up wrong, etc.

Outside of the RT play, I was very happy. Mills showed some middling improvement. Still very inconsistent with his placement, but he looks fairly comfy in this offense and he looks like a good backup at this point that can spot start and give you a chance.

Case - what can you say? As we sit here today, he is the best QB on this team, and by quite a bit.

If it's only about wins in 2023, Case would get the ball in Baltimore, and maybe be supplanted by CJ later in the year. Do I see that happening? Nope. I think this season is about more than wins and they will try to develop both young QB's, while letting Case be a mentor and coach on the field.

There were a couple of small hiccups by Ryans. He's a rookie like anyone else. The clock management at the end of the first half for example.

Overall grade for PS Game 1: B+

Day protected Stroud because he was his only option. Slowik cannot do that in the NFL. In Stroud, I saw shades of the game being too fast, a slow processor, panic decisions, and propensity to get hurt.
Too small of a sample size. Let's give the young man a chance to grow. What were your expectations for last night? He looked about like I explained him to look.

My comment was about the interception. He wanted the long completion so badly that he wasn't thinking clearly. He stared down the receiver and used poor judgement. I'm glad it happened in his NFL debut. Now it's seared into his memory and he'll develop better habits from it.

We can tell the sack wasn't his fault, but he should've gone down and turtled like Peyton Manning used to do. That's one of the smartest habits I've seen from a pocket QB.
