Pre-Playoff Mock

1) Kendall Wright, WR, BaylorFolks keep saying we need a big body opposite Andre, but we have plenty of big bodies. What we are missing is talent and this guy is one of the more talented people in the draft. He can play in the slot and he can play outside.

*If he is not available I'd go with Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

2) Josh Chapman, DT, Alabama If still available would be excellent value. Gives the NT position and D-line a boost of talent. He and Cody would be a pretty good rotation there and Earl could probably play a little DE and let JJ Watt and Antonio get some rest. Would immediately push cody for playing time.

*If he is not available I'd go with Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina

3) Ben Jones, C, Georgia
Can play some gaurd if needed. Provides a good solid back-up to Myers though. Has played and started a lot of football and has been an anchor for a pretty good O-line.

4) Robert Lester, FS, Alabama
Provides good depth at the Safety position. I like Nolan, but I think we can improve on the talent and depth at that position and I thihk Lester would be great value if available here.

5) Emanuel Acho, ILB, Texas
I think he could come in and immediately compete for a back-up role. Would be good value if available here.

6) Asa Jackson, CB, Cal Poly
Small School prospect. Not a household name, but is really athletic and has started every game of his college career; freshman thru senior seasons. Can retrurn Kicks if needed. Active tackler and willing tackler. Not afraid to make a hit on the RB.

7) Jeff Demps, RB/Returner, FloridaMostly drafted to return kicks. Bascially a more versatile Trindon Holiday. Can actually play some as a RB. Was considered very good a couple years ago, but Florida as a team has struggled and I think he has been overlooked. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield and as a runner he has averaged about 6.5 ypc for his career. Very exploxive player and is definitely one of if not the fastes player in the draft.


If I went with Jenkins in the first that'd change my draft up a bit, but not much. Instead of Asa Jackson in the 6th I'd take an O-line prospect. If we went plan on getting a WR in FA I may change up my draft as well. But I'd love this draft as is.

I like Marcus Fortson from Miami...

He was injured this past year, but the guy is big and athletic. He had also been pretty productive his previous two seasons. Was named freshman all american....

He decided to come out early...I think he would be available where we'd be picking in the third round...

I would not have an issue swapping those picks and now that you mention it I think I like that better.

1. Wright, not the player I would have picked, I like Sanu and Jones better, but there's no arguing with Wright's talent. He's a very good player, I just don't think he fits the Texans needs.
2. Chapman, I love the player and the pick but like Corrosion said I couldn't pass on Zietler if he's available in the 2nd round. I'll take an every down OG over a NT that will rotate with Cody and only play maybe half the downs.
3. Jones, I like this pick and player if he's still available. This might take some luck for him to fall the bottom of the 3rd.
4. Lester, I like the player and pick if he's still available but I don't see any way that Lester is still on the board this late. I think he goes in the 2nd or early 3rd.
5. Acho, very good pick this late, he'd be good depth at ILB.
6. Jackson, I don't know anything about the player but don't like the idea of a late round CB. What's he going to bring to the team that Harris, Carmichael, Allen, KJ, McCain, or McManis can't do. We've got enough CB roster fillers, we need top level talent at CB.
7. Demps, we've already got him on the team his name is Trindon Holiday, small really fast KR.

And Demps is better than Holiday in the sense that he could actually take Derrick Wards spot as the 3rd RB.

Demps is waaaay more polished at a true position than Holiday is so it wouldn't feel like we were dediating a spot to just a return specialist but rather a guy that could also see some time in offensive sets.

Also, I get what you are saying about Wright, but I think that Lestar Jean can be the big body guy with good athleticism and hands.

Now on to Demps- As much as I like Holliday, I would take Demps over him. He is just a more complete player than Holliday, and equally fast.

Brandon Harris combine 40 was 4.43. Asa's fastest was 4.40 and I agree with you on Wright.

Jackson, if he has the size, athleticism, potential, and work ethic to become a starter in a couple years then I don't mind the pick so much. If he has all these traits then surely other teams see this as well and would take him sooner since CB is such a coveted position. If he has all this and only falls because of small school status then he's a good pick in the 6th.

Demps, I won't argue that he's got more football potential than Holiday has but that ain't hard to do as a true position player. I don't see the Texans going with a small, fast, change up RB. If anything I think they'd go with a bigger bruising RB like Derrick Ward. In this role I like Marc Tyler.

Wright, again I'm not denying his greatness as a football player, I just don't see him being a fit for the Texans. We don't need a deep field sprinter to stretch the field. We don't throw the low percentage deep ball much anyway since Schaub doesn't have that kind of arm and we throw mostly short - medium high percentage routes. Due to Wrights lack of size I could see him getting killed on a crossing route over the middle by a SS like Pollard or FS like Reed.

6151, I have to disagree with you on Wright as he is exactly what Texans need. A WR with that kind of speed and hands forces a DC to account for him and pulls double team off AJ. Wright is deadly within 20-30 yards and catches well in traffic if he does not blow thru said traffic. His YAC is 15! We don't throw the deep ball much as we haven't had a WR that can get deep, beat coverage and catch ball. AJ's return allows that. Schaub hit AJ and one of the TEs for 40 or 45 I believe.

Wright is my guy, but I think Sanu and Alshon could go ahead of him pushing Wright somewhere to the top of the second. Either way I think Sanu, Alshon or Wright would be available there, so I'm going to trade out of the first completely.

I think he will be available here. I know a lot of people don't, but last year, if I'm not mistaken, only 4 gaurds went in the top three rounds. CBS sports currently has him ranked as the 5th best guard. IF he makes it to us here in the third, he'd be my guy...But really, even if I had to trade up a few spots to get him I'd make it happen.

4) Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincy

This guy is a beast. Plain and simple. Great speed, vision and toughness. He fits this system perfectly and is an excellent cutback runner. RB position has a lot of injuries and I'd let Ward walk or bring him back and compete to be the fourth RB on the roster.

4) George Iloka, FS Boise State

Upgrades the talent in the secondary. Big guy and runs well. I actually coached this guy and he played with my brother in little league. I could tell that he was going to be a good athlete, but he has gone on to do very well for himself. Has a lot of playing experience in college, played some WR in highschool...Good all around athlete and a very good kid from what I remember. Good parents as well. Went to kempner highschool in Sugarland.

5) Asa Jackson, CB, Cal Poly

6) Chris Gallipo, ILB, USC

I've mocked him before. I think he will be available here. Would be excellent depth at the ILB position and would provide good competition for guys to make the team. Good solid football player with good size and athleticism.

6) Ryan Miller, OG, Colarado State (6'8"...Can probably also play some tackle)

I've mocked this guy before too. I really like him as a run blocker. Despite his size he has good leverage and is very powerful. Comes from Colarado state so that's a plus too. He's 6'8" and could maybe play some tackle if needed.

7) Jeff Demps, RB, Florida

I wrote about this guy above, but I really like him here in the 7th. I'm a value guy and I think that all these guys are great value and address needs if they are available.

I would prefer that over Kendall Wright as well, but getting an extra 2nd/4th/6th is pretty enticing. Although, the Eagles, Bears and Browns will all be looking to pick up a WR between 15 and 21. I think both Floyd and Jeffery will be picked somewhere in there.

Who are you trading down with and why are they trading up. Trades are easy to say but in actuality are difficult to pull off. If there's any way we can get Chapman and Zeitler in this draft then it will be a success. I like Pead and Gallipo as well, good #3 RB and ILB depth. There's no way Miller is available in the 6th, I think he might go 2nd or 3rd at the latest. I think alot of teams will be looking at Miller at OT as well, thus the reason he goes higher than you think.

We've traded around in drafts quite a bit since our inception.

I think that there are quite a few teams that would like to have one of the young QB's that are coming out. Even if they don't plan to start them right away, I can see a couple teams wanting to trade up to grab one of those second tier QB's.

If one of the teams at the top of the draft don't get luck or RG3 they may not want to reach for a guy and instead take BPA and then want to trade back up into the first to get the QB they covet.

The Browns did that when they drafted Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn I think..

Yea Dwight Jones is a guy I'm high on and looks to be projected right around where we will be picking. If Yates is indeed our guy going into the future it would be neat to have that connection already there if we draft him.
