so far none of the guys we just cut have been picked up...so who do ya'll see being on the 8-man practice squad
 
Kenneth Pettway, Sloan Thomas, Chris McKenzie, Aaron Halterman, Frank Chamberlin, Zeke Moreno, Reggie Swinton, and Chad Beasly.

I dont know if Moreno and Swinton are eligible though.
 
Guys who havent played more than 9 games are Eligible for the practice squad. With that said, Lord, Thomas, Pettway, McKenzie, Halterman, Symons, a DL, and a OL.
 
I can't belive it. Is there something the Texans aren't telling us about him. Was his injury in the TB game that severe? I just can't imagine why they would want to let their top producer in the preseason go. Someone please explain this one to me.

Either he signed somewhere else or the injury he got was serious. Either way, Houston's holding out on us and I for one want to at least know why he didnt make the squad. He made some pretty amazing plays so its a mystery to me too.

Dumping proven producers, holding on to losers like Bradford, and Hollings, not addressing key needs in the offseason, and thus far,no movement on any waiver wire prospects. I'm begining to lose faith in this team's front office. I can't imagine what they are thinking.
 
i would hardly call Thomas a proven producer, how many actual games in his career has he played in, how many career touchdowns does he have? the point is he isn't proven, and the Texans need to have a solid WR core, and most teams would take Bradford over Thomas at this point, Bradford might not even play much, as far as I am concerned, Mathis, Gaff, Armstrong are all ahead of him, and obviously AJ too, Thomas would even be further back, probably behind Swinton

He was quite consistant in the preseason, on both deep and timing routes. He is a better possession receiver Bradford. All that aside though. why not sign him back to the practice squad again this year? He proved he deserved at least that much in my opinion. Swinton was more productive than Bradford too. Bradford is justa waste of a roster spot in my opinion. I know preseason isn't everything. But he didn't shot a single thing this preseason to change my opinion of him based on past performances.
 
ok well i just now read that swinton was cut, so there goes swinton in the equation. sloan made plays against 3rd string players, its not like he was going out every night they played, and having him go against charles woodson or champ bailey type players. thomas should be able to make a 3rd stringer look bad, most talent at the CB positions tend to drop off badly after most nicklebacks
 
We've just seen him in parts of a few preseason games, the Texans have been watching him practice including scrimmage in game type conditions for
a month or so in TC and that includes a lot of 2-a-days. They've seen many things about all their players that we average fans have not been privey to.
 
Judging by how Thomas felt.. (he wanted to play).. I wouldnt be surprised if he got invited to the Practice Squad and declined.
 
you guys are somthing else , yes we know it was preseason and he was playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers SO WHAT , thats what preseason is for to see who performs and who doesnt , theres no reason they shouldnt have made room for Thomas and to keep Hollings ? and Joppru a TE that hasnt seen a game yet . Defend the staff all you want to somthings not right
 
I have seen good things and bad things from Sloan Thomas during the preseason. I have seen him make great catches, but I have also seen him give up on routes. From what I have seen from watching the games, Thomas just hasn't been consistant. Like nunusguy said, the Texans coaches have seen them in practice for the last few months, and we haven't. What the coaches reasons for cutting him and not signing him to the practice squad, we may never know. I will say that I am suprised that the Texans are only keeping 5 WR's and also that Hollings wasn't cut.

Joppru does not count against the roster while he is on the pup list or IR.
 
He had to have been picked up by another team. He is much improved from last year, and last year the coaches thought he was worthy of the practice squad.

Also, if Donovan Morgan made the practice squad, he couldn't have been chosen over Sloan.

I just knew this would happen. :crying:
 
When the Texans let Baxter go that basically guaranteed a spot for Hollings. The Texans aren't going to carry just 4 running backs. Plus, with a 2nd round pick invested in him, I doubt they are ready to fully right him off.

My guess is because Bradford signed a 1 year guaranteed contract and Swinton didn't that they felt it was financially better suited to keep Bradford even if Swinton seemed to outplay him in the preseason.

As much as I can tell, Sloan Thomas hasn't signed with another team. If his injury was bad enough and the team wanted to keep him around they could have put him on the PUP list. Acually, they could have even if the injury wasn't bad enough. That would give them a few (6?) weeks to decide if he should go on the practice squad, the IR, the 53 man roster, or be released. I guess they didn't feel he was any better than Gaffney or Armstrong as a possession receiver.

Soooo, Sloan hasnt signed anywhere yet??? This great WR is still out on the market??? Oh my god. Like, how is it possible? He is just, like, so great. The Texans were just, like, so stupid. A player with his ability would be swiped up quicker than anyone else on the market. Duh. The Texans are just so stupid and so are the other 31 teams who havent picked him up yet. For crying out loud. He has been on the market for almost 4 whole days!!!!

Bengals, Broncos, Vikings, Bears, Redskins, Eagles, Giants, Browns and Texans dont have him on their practice squads as of now.
 
Why keep washed up Bradford...who 9 times out of 10 can't even get open???

This is the first year that I'm really starting to question the moves the Texans have made.
 
One more day passes, more practice squad spots taken. Any word on someone who was suppose to be a number 2 WR with us???

Im begining to wonder the same thing ...

Not only did they cut ARGUABLY two of their most productive players on defense from last season but they didnt add much ... Morlon Greenwood , Phillup Buchanon and Victor Riley . They didnt make any moves once the final cuts were made from other teams .... Im sure SOMEONE out there could help them .... Only One team has more room left under the salary cap than the Texans ...Im thinking they are lookin to make some big moves in the coming off-season (5 year plan) and are writing off this season before it starts . (high darft choice)

I was talking about Thomas and how some people on this board thought Thomas would be a number 2 on the team. But Thomas has still not signed anywhere.
 
Who's been that vocal about him being #2? I think people just wanted him somewhere on the team, whether it was as a 5-6th WR or on the PS. Of course it doesn't look like it will be too difficult to get him back if the FO changes their mind.

Also you have to remember he was one of the few bright spots in a pretty dismal preseason, so of course people are going to want to keep him around.

Interesting take. There have apparently been some really bad moves made by this organization of late. Maybe they see things in a different light and this team will go 10-6, even though most prognosticators are now predicting a record closer to 6-10.

It's hard to understand why players like Hollings, Bradford, Banks and Sanders are being kept around when they were consistently outplayed throughout the preseason.

Maybe they see that Carr is not the guy and with several potential franchise QB's in the draft this year, they are planning for the future.

It's hard to explain why the team made virtually no effort to upgrade their atrocious offensive line or try and get a legitimate #2 receiver or a bona fide pass rusher.

I'm afraid that this season will provide more questions than answers.

read the "Cut Corey Bradford" thread and you get the picture that cutting Bradford and keeping Thomas would have made the biggest change in the world.

Yes, that's what coaches and GM's do. Give up on the season before it starts and play for a high draft pick.

Not that I don't question some of the Texans' moves this season ..... BUT --

1.) People on this board tend to overrate their own NFL scouting prowess. Just because you think Greenwood, Buchanon, and Riley were not good pickups doesn't mean they weren't. Pardon me for questioning your scouting abilities, but I'll take a wait-and-see attitude regarding these three.

2.) Swinton getting let go was a move that certainly took many of us by surprise and I am not on board with it, either. The fact remains, however, that we still do not know why. Perhaps he underperformed in some of the key metrics that Capers had laid out for him. Maybe he sucked on ST. Maybe his contract situation wasn't viable. Maybe, maybe, maybe ... we don't know. It's fun to speculate, but let's not get carried away and claim that they're tanking the season because of a few moves that fans on this message board don't immediately agree with.

3.) As far as "someone" being out there to help them, particularly at LT, Victor Riley was it. Yeah, I know ... not a sexy choice by any means. They took a shot at Pace and it didn't materialize. Walter Jones was never realistically leaving Seattle. Who else did you have in mind? What impact LT was out there? I'm pretty sure the Texans were watching the market closely.

The bottom line is .... we'll see. It's not the answer a lot of people like to hear, but it's the reality that about 28 of the 32 NFL teams face at the beginning of the season. Indy is almost guaranteed a playoff spot and I'd bet their fans are on the message boards screaming about how the defense is going to let them down again this year. Or something.

We have a legitimate #2 WR, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. Gaffney posted more YPC than either AJ or Bradford last year and he had a higher percentage of catches-per-targets last year then either of them as well. The fact that he is not getting targeted quite enough does not detract from his productivity.

Undrafted FA from Texas A&M Kingsville. Signed with Raiders before being cut.

Here's a snippet from the Corpus Christi paper on him...

KINGSVILLE - Maurice Washington is no different than the other 81 football players on hand for this year's Whataburger Cactus Bowl.

The only Texas A&M-Kingsville player on the roster for the fifth annual Division II all-star game, Washington has the same aspirations of making a favorable impression on the 65 professional scouts in attendance. It is just that the Javelinas' leading receiver last season may have a bit more on the line than most.

"It could determine my future," Washington said of his Cactus Bowl performance. "I've got a family to feed, too. There's more motivation, but there's a little pressure, too."

Maurice III turned 5 in December. Come February, the elder Washington will have been married for five years to wife Donna.

Still, Washington is trying to treat the game as he would any other.

"Basically, it's like the regular season," Washington said. "Just play hard and practice hard. But mainly it's practice hard for the scouts, because they only get to see game film before they come here."

If the scouts did take a look at Washington's 2004 effort, they would see that he ranked 17th in the country with an average of 98.3 receiving yards per game. His 53 receptions and 12 touchdowns - he scored one on an end-around - helped lead the Javs to a 9-2 record, their 26th Lone Star Conference championship and fourth consecutive postseason appearance.

"He can be physical. He's going to have to get a little stronger to get off the press coverage," West coach Don Carthel said. "He has good hands and is a very coachable kid."

For his two-year career at A&M-Kingsville, Washington caught 92 passes for 1,670 yards and 16 TDs. He also ran for two scores and returned a punt for a TD.

Whether Washington is able to parlay his Cactus Bowl performance into an NFL draft pick or free-agent contract remains to be seen, although with five receivers on the West roster, he figures to get enough playing time.

Still, Washington has received some mixed signals this week in preparation for the game that will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest.

"It depends on what the scouts tell you," Washington said. "I've had one scout tell me I could get drafted in the third round. One said I'd be a free agent. So it's mainly just making me more motivated."

But Carthel, whose son Colby is the defensive line coach at Abilene Christian, said he believes the former Javs standout has a shot.

"I think so. I don't know what the NFL guys are thinking about him," Don Carthe1 said. "Helping out at Abilene Christian the last few years I've watched him pretty closely. He's a tremendous athlete. It's fun to be coaching him instead of against him."
