Possible late round CBs

Okay so we all know there ain't a whole lot going on right now. In terms of the draft I have been spending a lot more time thinking about early round guys...so I figured it would be good to get some input on some late round guys. Right now I have been looking at some possible late round CBs. One guy caught my eye. His name is Karl Paymah. He's from Washington State, his measurables are pretty good in that he is 6" 200lbs and ran a 4.31 40 at the combine. I checked out a few player reports on him and most say he is strong in run support and he is a good sound CB...the say his primary downside is his speed...so maybe he plays slower than he timed but 4.31 is dmn good speed on the track.

6" tall?!?

I'm no expert, but I'll bet that's the reason he's slipping under the radar. :D
 
Heh...I guess with the 6" thing Paymah would by far be the strongest guy pound for pound in the draft...being that he had 28 reps...but I guess he didn't have to move the bar very far idonno:

Do you think Hobbs would fit our defensive scheme...We don't run a lot of zone coverage right? Can he do well in man coverage? I ask because he didn't have an very good time in the 40 at the combine...4.5 Do you know anything about him other than what scouting reports might say? I ask because I don't know much about what any of these prospects can do except from what I read for free.
 
How about Stanley Wilson out of Stanford? He's 5'11" 189lbs & runs a 4.34 40 yard dash. Reading his draft profile at NFL.com, it seems to me that all his weaknesses can be corrected.

Positives: Has exceptional timed speed and acceleration … Very effective on deep routes, as he has the quickness to stay stride-for-stride with the receivers on go routes … Has a good feel for the play developing and shows awareness working in zone coverage … Will not be fooled by play action and shows the burst to close underneath … Displays the second gear needed to quickly recover when beaten … Uses his leaping ability effectively to compete for the jump ball.

Negatives: Has an almost frail looking frame with lean muscle and a lack of bulk … Track man with a sprinter's body … Looks very mechanical when having to change direction … Lacks aggression in his play and gets pushed around by the bigger receivers … Still learning proper coverage technique and can be beaten by good double moves … Does not plant and redirect smoothly when in coverage … Has great speed, but is not the type that can stop on a dime … Makes only passive attempts to face up and struggles to shed because of a lack of strength and poor hand placement … Shows some wasted motion in his backpedal, as it seems like his arms are tight and his body is not relaxed turning … Takes poor angles to the ball in pursuit and will prefer to side or arm tackle rather than wrap and secure … Plays at a low pad level, but just ducks his head before applying the hit, causing him to fall off tackles … Could probably offer value on special teams due to his speed, but has never handled return duties … In run support, he is the type that will sit back and wait before committing to the play.

I've seen him play a little since I follow alot of the Big 12 schools. He is better in zone coverage, but he can play man as well. I reall don't think he'd be more than a special teamer/dimeback with the Texans. I'd think the highest he'd ever be is a nickleback, and I see him sort of in the mold of Faggins. He could be had in the 6th or 7th round, and he could be an excellent value. He's a team leader, and a he's got good intensity. He isn't blessed with all the skills that the top tier CBs are, but he more than makes up for it with his heart and determination. As far as his 40 time goes I know www.nfldraftcountdown.com has him at 4.37. That's not too bad, but I don't know if that's from the combine or not. Best case scenario is he's drafted in the 7th, and spends his first year on the Practice Squad. He might be able to make it on the roster whenever Glenn decides to retire.
 
Here's some info on Hobbs from his schools Pro Day workouts.

Ellis Hobbs CB Hobbs (5-9, 186) ran his 40s in 4.37 and 4.39. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.18 seconds, the three-cone drill in 6.70 and the long shuttle in 10.98. He had an 11-foot-1 broad jump and 13 bench presses.

I think I'm the only person around here who is high on Michael Hawkins, Oklahoma/Dallas Desperados, 6'1", 4.38...I think he could end up being a second day steal...
 
It seems alot of teams are shying away from the bigger CBs with the new rule emphasis. If he can change direction as well as the smaller CBs then he might very well be a steal. Every draft has a few diamonds in the rough.
 
What about that guy from UH? I read that he blew away the scouts with his 40 time. I know having a great 40 time doesn't mean he's a great player, but how does he rate with some of these late round guys?
 
Has anyone heard anything about the aggie safety Jaxson Appel? He was one of the best tackling safties in college football last year. I think he would be worth a late round draft pick if still available.
 
I think Appel will come out next year and he is one of the best safeties in college football today.

I'm assuming you mean Stanford Routt...He measured in at 6'0", 185, ran a 4.35 and is a 6th round projection per www.DraftShowcase.Com ...

He's the 25th overall CB on www.DraftShowcase.Com and 31st overall on www.NFLDraftCountdown.Com ...

I was browsing DraftShowcase and a guy who caught my eye was Lamont Reid, NC St, 6'0", 205, 4.36...They have a 6th or 7th round grade on him...I wouldn't mind snagging a guy like him with one of our 7ths and developing him for a year or two ala Faggins...
