We are coming over from Manchester, UK to Texas in October and have managed to get some tickets for the Rams game - Section 133.

Via Trip Advisor, we have been advised to get the light rail to the game, which we will probably do.

How early should we aim to get to the stadium to make sure we can enjoy the atmosphere, have a good look round etc? I have read somewhere that some fans arrive 4 or 5 hours before the game or is that an exaggeration?

Any other advice you could give to ensure we maximise the day would be great.

This should probably be in the Tailgating section; this section is generally used to talk about the Team while the Tailgating section is about going to the game and enjoying it while you're there.

I've never taken the rail in Houston so I have no idea what it's like. I don't live in Houston at the moment, so my wife and I fly into town, rent a car, and then drive to the stadium.

There are a bunch of huge parties around the stadium prior to the game. There are bands playing and people cooking and all sorts of things.

Personally, I've never really met up with anyone from the boards at the game. My wife and I usually show up about an hour before kick-off, park, and go directly to our seats. But I know that there are lots of people here who know each other and hang out together.
 
Lots open up 4 hours prior to kickoff for tailgating, unless they've recently changed it. Be advised that you will need to procure a tailgating ticket to be there too much in advance. I don't know all the particulars with that recent change, but many on here do.

As if we don't have enough foreigners with funny accents in this city!!! Just kidding mate. Welcome to houston. I hope you all have a good time in the states. I've taken the rail from downtown. It's a breeze. Bring some blood pudding and haggis to put on the grill!!

You don't need a tailgate ticket unless you're planning on hanging around in the parking lots during the game. A game ticket is all you need to get on the property. Unless you are parking, then you'd need a parking pass.

Most of the tailgating begins 4 hours prior, but folks walking in aren't allowed to do so until 3 1/2 hours prior. At least that's the policy. So if it's a noon game and you take the rail, they are not supposed to let you walk in until 8:30.

Platinum lot tailgates 5 hours prior, but that's a pretty good hike from where the rail lets you out. Well, not once you're in since it's next the the stadium, but they'll make you walk around the property as opposed to through it if you get there before 8:30.

You're more than welcome to swing by our camp for a beer and whatever we're grilling, but you'd need a taxi to get to us over in the Yellow lot.

So, any time after 8:30 (for a noon game), to answer your question.
 
If you stay at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza on Kirby and 610, you can walk across the street at 8:30 am and enter the tailgating lots.

Don't let them talk you into taking the shuttle (they pulled that trick on a friend) it takes you and drops you off at the far side of the world.

Chicagotexan2 - would love to bring you some blood pudding and haggis over, but the lovely little dogs that sniff all the bags at the airport would probably get upset. Could look into shipping some if you like?

Hopefully will be able to watch some of the Texans games on tv over here before we arrive. Me and my son are going to London just before we fly out to watch the Vikings v Steelers. He is a Steelers fan and got me into the NFL.

I have used the light rail many times. It's my favorite mode to get to the game. I usually catch the rail at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) and park in their parking garage (they have security). When I started it was cheap, $5, but now they charge about the same as the stadium does ($15). You pay in the lobby at the desk. From MFAH the train takes 25-30 mins and it's about an 8-12 min wait between trains. The trains aren't too crowded going to the game so it''s nice on the way down.

On the way back, it's a different story. You have to wait in line in the hot sun to catch the train back. Be prepared to avoid sunburn. You may have to wait 30 minutes or so to catch a train. The trains are uber-crowded coming back. YOu'll probably have to stand and you'll be packed in most of your ride back.

If you use the MFAH for your parking, you won't have bad traffic once you get back to your car :)

Tailgate, not made any plans yet re hotels. We fly into Dallas via JFK and basically drive down via Austin, San Antonio to Houston. Galveston also on the list.
Lone Star horse racing and all the usual tourist bits.

Welcome & a future welcome to Texas! I'm sure you'll enjoy your visit - lots to do & see here.

For gameday, there's a few options. First the "rules" :(

Each person entering the tailgate lots must have a gameday ticket or a tailgate pass.
Each vehicle entering the lot must have a parking pass. (Buses & RVs may require two)

Okay, so thats it for getting in the lot. As far as tailgating:

Platinum Lot opens at 7am. All other lots open at 8am. Pedestrian traffic is allowed in at 8:30am

You're welcome to join the Blue Crew tailgate when you come in, we're in the Platinum Lot at the Northwest corner. No cover charge, no requirements, just stop in & say hi. We'll take care of the drinks & food. You can find maps on the facebook page : www.facebook.com/BlueCrewTailgate

Check Blue Crew thread in the tailgating section once it's posted (around a week before the game).

Regarding Houston-

If you are a fan of craft beer, we have several breweries here in Houston. I highly recommend a visit to the Saint Arnold Brewery.

One of the best burgers in town can be had at Lankford Grocery or the Hubcap Grill.

For BBQ, check out Gatlin's

If you're a foodie - for Upscale dining, check out Pass & Provision

Orther areas of interest in Houston - Art Car Museum, Menil Collection, The Level 9 tour at NASA, just to name a few.

Well done. Austin is one of the best cities in america imo and you will be very close to THE best brisket bbq in the US.
