Players to watch for 2016 draft

badboy

Hall of Fame
I was interested in Shawn Oakman 6'8" 280 DE Baylor but I agree with his decision to return for final year. 2014 stats: 51 tackles with 19.5 for loss, 11 sacks, 3 passes broken up and 8 QB hurries and three forced fumbles. He is often labeled a workout phenom that needs maturity but man what a specimen. Here is video with him jumping 40 inches vertical holding two 70 pound weights.

I'll be very interested to keep an eye on QB's Connor Cook and Christian Hackenberg. I'm not sure why but I think 2016 will be the year we take a 1st round QB, regardless of how well Mallett or Hoyer do. Just a feeling, I could be wrong.

Interesting thing is that neither will be within reach if they have good seasons. But if you don't want them due to poor play, they'll be available.

I'm thinking we might need to draft safety high if Ballentine doesn't shine. Also, if Joseph is gone next off season and KJ2 replaces him, we might go CB in first two rounds. I think many of us who watch college ball will look carefully at OLBs

When do you think will be the time to add weapons to the offense? Of course if the Texans could somehow get their hands on Jalen Ramsey that would be awesome. That guy is a stud.

Depending on how Clowney/Cushing looks LB may be a priority. With that said until BOB gets the QB situation figured out the Texans will continue to waste Watt's historic yrs. Kinda like AJ's best yrs.

You and others may think I'm crazy but I think we have weapons now. Nuk will be the man of WRs & TEs and Foster will continue with 4.5 avg or better + 8 yds receiving; with a steady QB all those should increase with perhaps less carries. In last 5 seasons with exception of 2011 with only 121 carries in 8 games, Foster has averaged close to 300 carries per season. He will turn 29 YOA in August & I can see him playing contract out thru 2016. He did drop (pun intended) his fumbles but his TDs dropped significantly. It would be very interesting to see what he could do with a healthy 16 games. 2010 327 carries with 1616 yds @ 4.9 and 2012 351 1424 @ 4.1. I was a bit surprised that Blue avg was 3.1 but he did have 528 yds.

Washington & Short3 will allow Strong time to adjust. We are developing depth and could go BPA 2016 draft.

Another guy is Spenser Drango OT who was coming off a ruptured disc in 2013. After last season he got a second round grade from NFL & returned to Baylor this season.

Somehow he played in what he remembers as agonizing pain against Tech until coaches lifted him after Baylor built a comfortable lead. Two days later on Nov. 19, he underwent a 45-minute surgery in Dallas to remove the disc.

The nerve pain was gone, but Drango’s recovery was just beginning. The first few weeks were the worst.

“A gallon of milk was the most I could carry,” the 6-6, 305-pound junior said. “I had to hold it to my chest.”

He was a spectator for Baylor’s final four games, including the Fiesta Bowl loss to Central Florida. Drango’s injury was one of several for Baylor, including the loss of game-breaking receiver Tevin Reese and middle linebacker Bryce Hager, the team’s leading tackler. After starting 9-0, the Bears finished 11-2 and didn’t quite look the same down the stretch.

If Drango can return to the level that made him an all-Big 12 selection, Petty believes the offense can be just as potent as last year’s, which set a major college record with 52.4 points a game.

“Spencer is an unbelievable talent,” Petty said. “It helps me out a lot. Your blind side is your main guy.”

My top guys to watch at each position for the Texans next year. These guys aren't necessarily the #1 player at their spot, but I think they are underrated at this point and will be highly rated by the time the draft comes back around.

QB - Jared Goff - JR, California: Started every game since he arrived on campus. 35 TD/7 INT as a sophomore.
RB - Paul Perkins - JR, UCLA: Over 1500 rushing yards in his first year as a starter. Also has 50 receptions out of the backfield in two years.
WR - Corey Robinson - JR, Notre Dame: No big stats yet due to QB issues. Did have 8 catches and 2 TDs on Darby against FSU last year.
Slot - D.J. Foster - SR, Arizona St: 2000 yards and 17 TDs rushing plus 1800 yards and 11 TDs receiving over three years. Moving to WR full time.
TE - Braxton Deaver - SR, Duke: "Move" TE who put up 46/600/4 in his first year starting.
OT - Ronnie Stanley - JR, Notre Dame: Was eligible this year and drew 1st round grades from some but decided to return.
OG - Landon Turner - SR, North Carolina: Easily the top interior prospect in next year's class.
C - Isaac Seumalo - SR, Oregon St: Could have entered early this year but was injured late in the year and decided to return.

DE - DeForest Buckner - SR, Oregon: 80 tackles, 13 TFL, and 4 sacks as a five tech last year. Better player than Armstead, just not as imposing.
NT - Josh Tupou - SR, Colorado: Traditional jumbo NT who clogs two gaps with no problem.
WOLB - Emmanuel Ogbah - JR, Oklahoma St: 17 TFL and 11 sacks last year as a DE. Has the athleticism to play standing up.
ILB - Tyriq McCord - SR, Miami: Starting SAM LB for Miami last year but projects better in the middle. Not as solid as Perryman but more flashy.
OLB - Dadi Nicolas - SR, Virginia Tech: Undersized edge rusher who had 19 TFL and 9 sacks last year. Extremely versatile. Can also play in space.
CB - Tre'Davious White - JR, LSU: Criminally underrated. Has been the #1 CB and PR since his third game as a true freshman. Excels in man.
CB - Zack Sanchez - JR, Oklahoma: 21 PD and 8 INTs in two years as a starter.
S - Jalen Ramsey - JR, Florida St: Can do everything. Play in man, cover deep zone, and tackle in space.

I'd be surprised if Hackenberg gets a first round grade.

TE - Braxton Deaver - SR, Duke: "Move" TE who put up 46/600/4 in his first year starting.

Great stuff overall. Just something to keep in mind is Deaver is coming off his 2nd ACL tear to his left knee. Those stats are from 2013. He missed all of last season with his second knee injury. His first knee injury included ACL tear and patella fracture so that knee is in rough shape. He recently sat out the contact portion of spring football so there is really no way to know how he will perform post-injury until week one.

I am somewhat aware of Deaver's injury situation. I did not know that it was his second tear though.

This is more of a projection based on what I've seen from him on tape. I'm not projecting a first round grade or anything, but if he's healthy and ready to play this season I think he will be a name to watch and move up the ranks. He's a very talented player.

Hackenberg has the tools to be a top 3 selection but he will be picked apart and fall drastically if he performs poorly again this year. Personally I think most of the blame lies with James Franklin being absolutely lost when it comes to offense, but Hackenberg clearly regressed last year regardless of who's fault it was.

He was a Freshman All-American when Bill O'Brien was coaching him.

I don't think Penn State will win 10 games. He'll be looked at like Garrett Grayson.

Other than nepotism (which as imaginary as it was, was supposedly a bad thing with Kubiak) why?

Because if the Rockets are picking high enough for Hack that will mean Mallett had a bad yr. With QB being a need I'm fairly sure BOB will take a QB that 1, Already knows the Offense. 2. Has had success in BOB's offense.

Rockets?

Still... just because he had success with him at the collegiate level? That would be pretty Kubiskish. Especially if he doesn't play any better than Grayson did at Colorado state.

If a starting QB doesn't emerge from the group we have, I'd rather we package whatever we need to get a QB worthy of a first round pick.

Watching the Rockets, having brain farts.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I think it's likely OB would consider any number of variables beyond just one season spent in his offense in college.

Not disagreeing with you, but dont discount the success that BOB had with this type of QB. Hack's play helped BOB land the Texans job.

Along that same line of thinking, he was comparably as successful with Ryan Fitzpatrick after one year as well. Penn State was 7-6 with OB & Hackenberg.

I do like Hackenberg's skill set but the results at Penn St during OB's two years there are more a reflection on his coaching ability than anything else. There is absolutely no way that team should have had a winning record after the sanctions they received. A number of their top players left for the draft or transferred due to the sanctions, plus their ability to recruit top talent was severely hampered.

Hack does deserve credit for what he was able to do as a true freshman, but his coach was the main reason for his success. You're seeing that now with the terrible coaching job that Franklin has done and how much it has affected him. I think his true ability lies somewhere in between the results of the last two seasons, but there is no doubt that OB was able to get a lot out of him. And I do think that would continue to happen as the player grows in his system.

But that also doesn't guarantee that OB would intentionally seek him out. His attitude with QBs suggests to me that he thinks he can make just about anyone serviceable.

University of Pittsburgh potential 1st round 2016:

receiver Tyler Boyd, a potential first-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, is reportedly facing DUI charges.

KDKA in Pittsburgh reports that Boyd was pulled over early Friday morning in suburban Jefferson Hills. The officer who pulled him over said he smelled alcohol, and a breathalyzer tested positive for alcohol.

Police say Boyd admitted he had two shots of alcohol. Boyd is only 20 years old and could face charges even if he was not above the .08 limit.

Last year Boyd had 78 catches for 1,261 yards and eight touchdowns and became the first player in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference to record a 1,000-yard receiving season as both a freshman and a sophomore. He also led the ACC in kickoff returns with a 27.6-yard average and was second in the ACC in punt returns with a 10.1-yard average.

Boyd is talented enough that he might have been a first-round pick this year if not for the NFL’s rule requiring players to wait three years after high school to enter the draft. But now he’s potentially hurt his future draft stock with an off-field red flag.

What some forget was during BoBs stint at PSU, recruits really weren't dying to play there. And during last season Hack had a bad Oline with players moving on and or graduating. Donovan Smith was one of the key starters to return. The kid was sacked a lot last year

NCAA questions Laremy Tunsil's stepdad about Ole Miss

OXFORD – NCAA officials were here Friday and interviewed the stepfather of Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil about allegations of multiple rules violations by the University of Mississippi football program.

The trip made by NCAA officials comes one week after Tunsil was arrested for domestic assault against his stepfather, Lindsey Miller. According to an arrest report by the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office obtained by The Clarion-Ledger this week, Miller claimed the fight was a result of his warning to Tunsil about having contact with player agents.

Miller confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger Friday that he met with NCAA director of enforcement for football Chris Howard for what he estimated was three hours.

Calls to Howard's cell phone were not immediately returned.

An Ole Miss spokesperson told The Clarion-Ledger that the school has not had contact with the NCAA and was unaware of any representatives being in the area.

Miller declined to comment further on his meeting with Howard and one other unnamed NCAA official, saying he agreed that their talks would remain confidential.

But on Thursday, Miller alleged to The Clarion-Ledger that in addition to the contact made by agents he is aware of violations that occurred during Tunsil's recruitment as well, including claims of falsified academic records and gifts made by the university.

Miller also alleges that the agents have provided Tunsil with other benefits outside of transportation, including gifts of cash, clothes, help with car insurance payments and more.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said Tunsil, who is projected to be a top five pick in next year's NFL draft, allegedly assaulted his stepfather in defense of his mother, Desiree Tunsil.

When Lafayette County deputies arrived at the scene Thursday, according to the police incident report, Miller was "very excited" and claimed that "Tunsil and the agents" left in a yellow convertible.

The deputy put out a "BOLO," or "be on lookout," for the car with both the Oxford Police Department and the university's police, the report says.

Tunsil would be able to speak with certified NFL agents under NCAA rules as long as he doesn't sign a contract with them or accept any impermissible benefits.

But under NCAA bylaw 12.3, a student-athlete may not accept transportation from an agent. This also applies to the student-athlete's relatives or friends.

"We are aware that Laremy and his family have met with potential agents, which is within his NCAA rights as a student-athlete," Freeze said in a statement to The Clarion-Ledger earlier this week. "Regarding the altercation, we will continue to gather facts and cooperate with the proper authorities."

Both parties have pressed charges against each other.

Tunsil and Miller are scheduled to appear in court on July 14, said Lafayette County Sheriff's Department officials.

Tunsil is Kiper's "too early" 2nd ranked prospect.

Cardale Jones Seen As First-Round Prospect
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

The Ohio State quarterback competition is the most anticipated story of the 2015 college football preseason. While college football fans are eagerly awaiting a starter to be named, the NFL scouting community is also on the edge of its seat, hoping that their preferred candidate wins the job. That player is junior Cardale Jones. The NFL wants to see Jones play because it really liked what it saw in the small sample size from the end of last season.

Jones completed 61 percent of his passes for 860 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He came up with some clutch passes in crunch time to lead Ohio State in those wins. Adding in that he has a firehose for an arm at 6-foot-5, 250-pounds, the traits are there to get NFL evaluators excited for his potential as a pocket passer. We spoke with college scouts from numerous teams about what they saw in Jones.

Sources from some teams said they did some preliminary work on Jones because he could have declared for the 2015 NFL Draft. They said that from that initial work, there is a lot they really like about Jones. They said that Jones has rare physical talent and ability to do anything an NFL team could ask of their quarterbacks.

One source said that Jones reminds them of a less-mobile and athletic version of Cam Newton. Both are massive quarterbacks who are hard to get down and also possess the power to run over defenders. They also have devastating cannons for right arms. Jones has rare arm strength, and it makes sense why Jones' nickname is "12 gauge." His shotgun can make any throw to any location on the field that the NFL asks of quarterbacks. From the small sample size, Jones showed the ability to function as a pocket passer and distribute the ball downfield.

While Jones isn't a runner like Newton, league contacts say that they like what he can do with his feet. He can pick up yards on the ground when plays break down. He has more quickness and athleticism than one would think. He is tough to bring down in the pocket and when he takes off downfield. His mobility and running only add to how he can hurt defenses.

A few sources said they have questions about Jones' maturity and football I.Q. They hope those concerns will be put to rest by him winning the starting quarterback job and handling that role without any off-the-field issues. Sources did say they've heard that Jones is a good teammate and players gravitate towards him. They believe he has leadership potential.

One scouting director said they like Jones. He described him as, "Big, strong-armed kid, but has enough athletic ability and strength in the pocket. Vertical type passer ... Cardale, is immature as a person, but if he checks out and wins the job, he has a chance to go high. Probably better than [Blake] Bortles if he plays like he did in the last three games."

Bortles was the third-overall pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2014 NFL Draft. Sources from two other teams agreed that Jones would be a better prospect than Bortles if he played an entire season like he did in the final three games. Thus, sources from around the league see Jones as a first-round talent with the potential to go high on Thursday night in 2016, and they hope to see him get the opportunity to prove that.

He's already been mentioned in this thread, but I finally got some time to watch some of Cal QB Jared Goff's highlights. Reminds me a lot of Philip Rivers. Going to keep an eye on this kid when college football starts back up.

University of Pittsburgh potential 1st round 2016:

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh wide receiver Tyler Boyd entered a first-time offenders program Friday following his arrest for driving under the influence last month.

Allegheny County Common Pleas judge Robert Gallo also ordered Boyd's driver's license suspended for 90 days and required Boyd to complete a safe driving program. Boyd can ask Gallo to expunge the DUI charge against him if Boyd successfully completes the programs and pays court costs.

Boyd, an All-ACC first-team selection in 2014, was pulled over in the early hours of June 12 in Jefferson Hills, about 30 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Boyd told police he had two shots of alcohol.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi suspended Boyd from team activities for a month. Boyd, who is from Clairton, rejoined the Panthers last week.

Alabama's RB Derrick Henry 13 carries for 147 (11 avg)yards and 3 TDs versus Wisconsin. He is 6' 3" and 242 lbs and is a junior with a fractured leg in spring of 2013. He caught 5 passes for 159 yards prior to injury. Allegedly 4.4 in 2014 at 238 pounds and is a long strider that gets to corner quicker than expected and is good with cut backs. Only problem I am aware of he goes for home run often when he should just get the yards he has available. His blocking was very good in Sugar Bowl and pretty interesting to watch yesterday

CJ Prosise from ND. Started as a DB, then moved to slot receiver. This year ND has moved him to RB and he looks terrific. Good size and speed, and for a guy new to the position, looks like he has natural talent for carrying the ball

Wzjciak(sp?) #90 DT Boston College looks really good tonight against a good running Florida st team. Also #24 smith for Florida st is all over the field.

Man, Treadwell really reminds me of Dez Bryant. Not saying he is at that same elite talent level, but physically and skill set wise they could be clones.

I don't like any of those guys. Hogan played maybe the best game of his career last night but he has been so hot and cold the last 2 years and also has that huge hitch in his windup. There is no consistency with him whatsoever and that is an issue when a guy has started 40+ games. Prescott is Tebow 2.0. He's a little better of a passer and not quite as good a runner, but the skill set is pretty much the same. Lambert is a JAG. Played great against a pretty mediocre South Carolina but was pretty bad against a much better Vanderbilt unit the week before. He's only thrown for 200+ yards 5 times in 13 career starts with a 15/11 TD/INT ratio.

All you guys are sleeping on Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld. Seriously, I know that he comes from a no-name program, but the kid is the real deal.

2012 (Freshman):
Played in 7 games, throwing 15 times or more in 4 of them. Completed 62.2% of his passes for 632 yards, 7 TDs, 1 INT.

2013 (Sophomore):
Started 8 games, played in 13, throwing 15 or more times in 12 of them. Completed 60.2% of his passes for 2,523 yards, 21 TDs, 9 INT.

2014 (Junior):
Started 6 games before being sidelined with a non-throwing shoulder injury. Completed 60.5% of his passes for 1,151 yards, 6 TD, 3 INT.

2015 (Senior):
So far, he has led IU to a 3-0 record, completing 63% of his passes for 938 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT.

He has a good, over-the-shoulder delivery, scans the field pretty well, and has underrated agility. He wont burn people with his feet, but he wont be leading the league in sacks. Add in that he is 6'6" and 240 lbs, and it is shocking to me that he is not talked about more.

He was on my radar last year until he got hurt. I liked what I saw. Haven't had the opportunity to see him play yet this season.

cannot believe I just found this post 65. I never watch Indiana, football anyway. Found Sudfeld just yesterday and spent hours researching him and he seems to be real deal. He looked very good against Ohio State today and then had ankle injury. Those looking at today's stats only did not see the dropped passes by receivers that hit them in hands. I think you have identified another good player and I've mocked him in third round..for now.

Remember when Cushing was always aggresively around the ball and contributing to the stat sheet across the board?

So do I when I watch Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith.

Yeah, his stat-line looks rough for that game, but I think his injury definitely played into that. You could just tell he had problems driving off of that foot, problems that were not there earlier in the game/season. Sudfeld finished 10/21, but started off 6/9, and that is with a very noticeable drop included in the first 9 attempts.

Hopefully this injury is not that a long-term thing. They play Penn State next, and it would be nice to see Sudfeld play against Hackenburg.
