Phillip Rivers....

I was watching ESPN the other day and they were talking about what could be a QB controversy in San Diego next season and it got me to thinking. They said Rivers will either get a 5.5 million dollar bonus or will count 5.5 million against the cap next season, I can't remember. Either way the Chargers will not have a problem cap wise keeping Rivers. But like they were saying, you can't just bench Brees after the season he had, and then you are paying Rivers 5.5 million to ride the bench. One of the guys was talking about how Dallas or another team in need of a QB could try and maybe trade a 1st round pick for Rivers. I was just wondering what you guys thought about the situation. As you can tell, now that the Texans season is over I am bored and thinking about these things now. :hairpull:

The Chargers would be crazy if they didn't keep Brees.
They could save $$ and get Rid of Rivers to get another 1st round draft pick (3).

If you ask me...I wouldn't mind being in the Chargers shoes right now. They have a lot of options. And Ladanian signing midway through the season to an extension...they have a VERY promising future.

In all likelihood Rivers isn't getting traded. He received a $14.5 mil signing bonus. All of the prorated remainder of that would accelerate to this year if they traded him, so say $12 mil. Yes they have $20 mil in cap space so they could, but it would hamstring any upgrade attempts for the team. If the NFL wants trades to occur (and whether they should is a whole nother subject) they need to fix this rule so the acquiring team has to count the prorated remainder on their cap and the trading team only gets stuck with the prorated amount for the time they had the player.

Think about it............if this thing works out the way I think, the Chargers could look like genius when they weren't tryin.

Remember that the Chargers traded Manning for Rivers, a 1st round pick from the Giants this year, and like a 3rd last year and a 5th this year. Now, they already have 2 first round picks. If they trade Rivers to Dallas for 1 of Dallas' 1st this year, there early 1, then they could have 3 first round picks this year plus additional draft picks. Not to bad huh? It more than likely won't work like that but that would be somethin right?

I don't know why Dallas would trade for Rivers.........they invested and gave Henson like an 8 year deal and you would bring in a QB with that kind of contract to start..................besides I don't think Rivers ever played baseball so why go to Dallas?

Coach Gibbs stated this past season he was going with Ramsey next year as their starter and I believe he got the last 3 starts or more. Unless they've changed their minds I'm not sure about Rivers. Although you never know what Mr. Snyder will do.

The Chargers aren't trading Rivers. It's an option but it's so far fetched as Infantry so correctly described it's not worth discussing.

Personally, I think the Chargers are going to come out of this looking like *****s. In the end, they're going to trade Brees who will go on to be a much better QB than Rivers (I'm not sold on Rivers' abilities at all). So unless they get some major in return for Brees and actually do something with that/those picks, they're going to come out looking pretty dumb. Which would be the norm for San Diego.

I heard the Chargers were thinking about tagging Brees and keeping Rivers, but like someone said earlier in this post, if the Chargers were to trade Rivers to the Cowboys or another team, they would have THREE first round picks. Also Rivers pocketed about 5 million this seas to ride the bench, that is a lot to pay someone if you keep them as a backup.

They are not going to trade Rivers and wont give Brees a long contract. They will franchise tag Brees and if the right offer comes along they will trade him. If not, they will keep him for one more season. Rivers can sit and dont forget that Steve McNair sat his first 3 years in the league...

How much of that bonus prorated salary whatever its called would be accelerated in a trade? That could be a really nasty number.

About $12.4 mil. The Chargers are projected to be about $20 under the cap. Trade Rivers and franchise Brees and they have used up all that money. Of course they could sign Brees to a more cap friendly long term deal but the $12.4 is still going to sting.

The only question I have is who is willing to trade for either Brees or Rivers.......both are going to come at a cost, when there could be some big name QBs out there in FA.

Matt Hasselbeck might crack the FA waters with Jones and Alxander needing to be resigned. Also reports of Joey Harrington being cut could have teams saying why trade away a part of our draft to go get Brees or Rivers when we can simply sign 1 out of the FA waters.
