Phillip Rivers/Chargers - Not meant to be

Well we dont know all the details to the deal. Maybe it had alot of money for playing time, which he isnt guaranteed. You never know. Maybe the Chargers arent being straight. But then again, maybe Phillip is a spoiled brat. Who knows.

I think the Chargers have proved over and over again that they are totally inept when it comes to signing first round picks. More than likely the Chargers set a lot of incentive money, and Rivers is unhappy that the incentives are unachievable. Don't forget that the Browns said that they had made their "Best Offer" to Winslow, but have since said that they might be able to budge and make a better one. I don't blame the management or the player for trying to get the best deal for himself, but when the management went public and try to paint the guy as a bad guy it is entirely self destructive. Eventually the guy will sign, and then the Chargers will promote him around town as the 'Face of the Franchise'. Looks like Rivers could hold out longer than Winslow. Mort said that he boarded a plane back to North Carolina.

I have met Phillip Rivers and happen to be a big fan of him. He's a nice guy and pretty humble in my opinion. I don't know the details to what's going on over there in San Diego, but we also don't know why he went back to NC, what he'll be doing, or how long he'll be staying. These guys have a lot to worry about when they sign their contract...their future depends on it in some ways as well as their families. I think Winslow and Rivers will be signed by the end of preseason.

The crazy thing is, I bet the #10 pick Ben Rotheinslberger (spelling) will be better than #1 Manning and #4 Rivers.

I feel sorry for LT. The Chargers could have got him a Left Tackle to run behind for a long time and now he gets a QB that probably wont play this year....

You can call me crazy, but LT could average insane amounts of yards per carry and yards per game if the Chargers would be smart enough to get him a good line. 5.3 yards per carry with one or the worst lines in the league, that could go up to around 8 if they would have gotten a couple of good O-lineman that could open up a hole....

and Drew Brees is a decent QB...he could've gotten them by at that position this year while they filled in some more needed gaps. L.T. in my opinion is possibly the most dangerous back in the NFL...

the chargers will eventually give in, they always do. tomlinson, still can't call him LT, missed most if not all of training camp with a hold out and san diego gave him his money. jammer missed the first 3 games and got his money. the chargers will probably give him his money, bit i think is chance to start early was gone out the window. they should have taken gallerey because the last thing this fanchise needs is another flop qb, not saying he will be a flop but they can't take that chance. also gallery might have been enough to keep tomlinson in san diego, but now he is counting the days.

Just heard this on the Dan Patrick Show, one incentive that the Chargers offered Rivers was $5 million if Rivers won 4 Superbowls in his first 4 years. No wonder why they arent getting anywhere...

I might be one of the only non-giants homers in the world that was behind Eli not going to San Diego.

I even devised some convoluted conspiracy. About SD trying to smear Manning to get Rivers (thier choice from the start) and draft picks while saving face in case rivers was a bust or Manning a star.
Well, looks like the Chargers can't even run a smear campaing correctly, thank you Rivers, thank you for sticking it to the **** head Chargers.
Who would want to play for the Chargers? Apparently not Eli Manning, and he is a bad guy for it.

Also, Phillip Rivers :boxing:

So who wants to play for the worst organization top to bottom in football?

Apparently no one.

:soapbox:

Yeah, I heard about the four years, four superbowls incentive. Talk about something to laugh about. I think if he won One for the chargers he should get 5 mil. And I doubt he would earn that one!

If he wins one for the Chargers forget about the 5 Million dollars. Give him the franchise. He can't do much worse as a GM.

The Chargers have had alot of 1st Round holdouts lately. Only LT and Jammer come to mind at the moment. Did Leaf holdout? If anyone can think of anymore please let me know.

The real root of the problem is the stadium, or lack of, in San Diego. No suites, or any of the other goodies that most teams are getting these days. It kinda reminds of the months before BottomLineBud moved the old Oilers to Val Hala! The Chargers demand a new fancy stadium, the fans and city fathers are saying now way till you put a winner on the field, and the team is saying no winners till they get a posh new stadium. It is called NFL standoff, and it might result in the Chargers being the team of the future for L.A. Too bad for the S.D. fans though. Sure am glad we got Bob McNair and the Texans and Reliant Stadium. We were very lucky. :thumbup

i heard on nfl live something like 20 million of his incentives would be impossible to get, i didn't know how that was possible, but now i know. no wonder they're having trouble signing, i wouldn't sign with junk like that in my contract.
