[PFT] Texans try out QBs and WRs

Though the Houston Texans have three quarterbacks under contract, they spent part of Tuesday eyeballing two more.

Per a league source, Colt Brennan and Jarrett Brown tried out for the team on Tuesday.

The intentions aren't clear, but it could mean that Matt Leinart or Dan Orlovsky are on shaky ground.

The Texans also checked out four receivers: Reggie Brown, Derek Hagan, Dexter Jackson, and Demetrius Williams.

Or someone feels that if the pass protection continues as last week, Schaub is more likely to watch upcoming games from his hospital bed.
 
I liked Colt Brennan from back in the day. Despite Tommy Chang breaking NCAA records before him, Brennan was a huge step up. He's a system QB with a decent deep ball... like Schaub was.

The Texans work out players every week. I wonder why PFT considers it news worthy to post about it? I assume every team in the league conducts workouts on days off (or at least it would be the smart thing to do).

Cause why would you waste your time working out QB's when we are probably one of the most stacked with talent at that position overall?

We just signed Matt Leinart. It seems kind of odd that we're trying out QBs. The coaching staff must be concerned with the o-line's inability to protect the QB and also the quality of our back-ups. It seems like they don't have much faith in either Dan O. or Leinart.

As for trying out WRs, that's plausible. We were inundated with injuries to the WR position. I don't think Andre Johnson is back to 100% yet and Jacoby Jones' injury could be worse than we thought.
 
Or we did not want to waste the time of the QBs on the current roster throwing to bunches of WRs so we "tried out" a couple of QBs to act as throwing machines.

Oh man I was so thinking we need Aaron Glenn to come out of retirement, then I could where my 31 jersey again. He'd have to talk the Piss Knocker out of it though.

Last year of contract....injury should be fine by this weekend.

Jacoby (although at times has pan-hands) always has the ability to make the big play. If you look at last season on his receptions, he only had 27 receptions...turned it into 437 yards and 6 touchdowns. That's 22% of the time he's scoring when his hands touch the ball (if he can hold on to it).
His 16.2 YPC is not too shabby either.

Now I know, Jacoby scares the hell out of me sometimes holding the ball. But I also know that when he gets the ball in open space, he'll make something happen because of that big play ability.

You make good points. I just can't get past those hands.

I mean, every time he's back to field a kick I'm yelling "don't fumble, don't fumble, don't fumble!" at the TV.

However, he is a big play waiting to happen, either in the punt return game or as a deep threat. He struggles in the short passing game, but is explosive intermediate to long. He has value to teams, as does Lienart. I could see a Redskins trade, since Kubiak has Shanny's ear and can give him the scoop on Matt's progression. Haynesworth lacks a lot of value a the moment, so I could see the Haynesworth for JJ trade being a possibility.

Oh man that would be kind of nice, but I doubt we would want to pay Haynesworth what he thinks he's worth, and man do we really need another motivational issue player with a coach that can't seem to motivate?

AH wants to play DT in a 4-3 defense and he will get two opportunities to get back at the Titans. I think that is enough motivation and he is an instant upgrade over Shaun Cody.

Andre Carter used to be a 4-3 DE who had 11 sacks last year, but has now been converted to a 3-4 OLB and doesn't seem to be doing well with it. I figure he could do just about as well as Aaron Schobel would have done here. We need a DE to replace Connor Barwin and he could be the guy.


I wouldn't be surprised to see Steve Slaton or Derrick Ward thrown in too.

That seems pretty implausible to me. Given the fact that Davis is on IR, Dickerson is a rookie, and AJ is hurt, I can't imagine us trading away our only legitimate deep threat who's a prominent player at (now) one of our most shallow positions.

I like the possibility of us actually being aggressive in making this team better, but I think Ward is here for at least this season. While we need the help at DE right now, I personally don't see it happening unless Kubiak is in serious "win or I'm out" mode. Anything at DT would be an upgrade, and as long as Haynesworth produces we will let his antics slide (much like we do with Antonio). My concern is if we go after a DE, he will not only be situational based on passing downs (when Antonio kicks in), but what will be his role next season when we get Connor back? This season is showing that we are really hurting without him, and that he is a big part of what we want to do on defense.


I'm not an expert on this issue, but if I remember correctly Nate Clements has simply been ok for the 49ers, and they still think they have a shot at their division. I could see us sending a WR and RB (a la JJ and SS), and perhaps a draft pick for Clements...but that would mean that we would be conceding defeat on our CBs, which I don't think Kubiak will do.


My biggest hope is that we're trying to make a play for a good FS. People have been down on Pollard because of this coverage skills, but that doesn't bother me. He is a true SS and his strength should be primarily run-stopping with a competence in zone coverage. He fits great what we want to do, but he's trying to do too much...and that's why we need a FS to let him play within his strengths.

I'd rather see us get talent at DT/DE, than I would go after CB/FS. No matter what if we don't start getting some type of pass rush it will not matter who you put at corner they are eventually going to get free. Two froathing at the mouth DL that want to rip heads off and crap down peoples back will go a long way to strengthing up our young secondary.

I'm with you on the DT, we definitely need help there. But as far as DE, I'm just a little concerned that adding another one is going to hurt us in the long run rather than help. Anotonio is our all-purpose, with Connor being our pass-rushing specialist. If we get another it will help this year, but what would we do next?

I will agree that you can't have too much talent, but I don't think our coaching staff is the kind to use creative fronts/formations that would have 4 DE's on the field on passing downs. Because of that, I would feel as though we would be wasting a player/pick on another position of need if we were to do this.

I would sacrifice one of our 5 WR's for a defensive player that can apply pressure to the quarterback with no hesitation.

I'm sorry Connor isn't a proven talent and we know nothing about the extent of his injury yet, so we can not assum he is going to make it back next year or that he can even play again. This might be why we are looking to trade now as well. I can not imagine that having another true DT, with another good DE would be a bad thing. Maybe Mario with all his injuries just can't play anymore?

Understood. A guy won't necessariy come back from injury. My concern here is that we would pull current/potential talent away from other positions of need for a one-year stop-gap. If that doesn't turn out to be the case, great...but I don't think our coaching staff would utilize an abundance of talent to our advantage.


By the way...shame on you for that last sentence. If that's the case we all know who to blame for jinxing us! :rake:

I think it is possible, because Kubiak hears the whispers that he could be in trouble if the D continues to be awful.

Jarrett Brown? Brennan might not be a bad project, yes he was a system QB but I think he's got the physical tools to be nice backup.

Help at WR? Interesting. None of them blow me way, but then again when you're mid-season scouring the waiver wire, you're not likely to be blown away at who is available.

I would love to see the FO make a move to bolster the team in the secondary. I think they're content to seeing what Anderson and Ogun. can do when they've gotten more reps.

Teams (not just the Texans) regualrly try out players on Tuesdays, the names and position do not always get out, but this is par for the course work acros the entire NFL. Sometimes it is for immediate reasons like when we needed DEs, but often just to have direct knowledge of players if another injury or need emerges during the season.

WR has nothing to with trading, since Walter and Anderson are the only guys truly healthy. The Texans may need a body sooner than later.
