Perhaps our answer at TE?

So.. taking a TE on the first day probably isnt gonna happen.. not with our needs on Defense.

But here is a guy that we could maybe grab late on the second day. a 5th-7th round prospect.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/playerprofiles/wr/vincentjackson.html

notice he is a WR. but then check those o' so magical words at the bottom "also played basketball in college." that seems to be the flavor of the decade for successful TEs.

This is a good guy to think about grabbing and seeing what he can do. maybe with some grooming he could become at least somewhat like Gates or Gonzalez.

it says he is a good punt returner too.. may be worth it to give him a look for that as well.

oh btw.. who was that TE we had that played basketball at one point.. started with an R I think. I remember him looking pretty good but then we didnt hang on to him. Did he go somewhere else? is he even in the NFL anymore?

btw ive heard some people refer to him as a late 3rd rounder.. so who knows when he will actually be available.

sounds a little undersized for the Texans scheme, remember blocking & protection for Carr as well as blocking in the running game are critical.

here is a prospect Tim Day out of the U of O, only a junior but is seriously considering coming out early. I believe the Ducks just lost their offensive coordinator to Utah so this may be a done deal now. Anyway I've watched him develop the past couple of years and I'm telling you he may be the best TE prospect in the draft & undervalued if he comes out early. At 6-4 and 265 lbs he can run, is fluid has good hands and destroys tacklers. I would like to see him improve his route running, footwork and speed but the raw intangibles are there to be a franchise TE, the best at Oregon since Russ Francis and oh yeah he was "All World".

I like how he moved from guard to TE/DE in highschool (I know, I know... we're not supposed to look at draft prospects' entire career, but still...)

as far as jackson is concerned he reminds me of Bmiller...
no blocky, only catchy

bleh , just utalize the TE's already on the roster ..... quit wasting picks on the position .

Exactly, how many picks have we wasted on TE?

well the problem is that they HAVE been wasted picks. if they hadnt been wasted picks we wouldnt be having this conversation :). I mean.. if you draft LTs three years in a row and all three turn out to be busts.. you dont just say "screw it, lets just play a crappy LT and hope we can get by".

My point is that this guy MAY be available very late in the draft, and could be a good late pick.. the risk vs reward is nice.

you mean to tell me Billy Miller isnt servicable ? He's a Complete mismatch for almost every LB in the game .
Tell me Mark Bruener cant get it done .... He's a fine blocker and servicable reciever .
The problem isnt a lack of production based on opportunity , its the near total lack of the TE being used in the Offense . There is a lot wrong with how the Texans go about their busines on that side of the ball . And the biggest concern there is the O-Line not getting it done in the running game , everything else feeds off ot that . Miller has shown he can can catch the ball , Bruener that he can block . Not every team has a Tony Gonzales @ the TE position. Nor do you need that type of TE to win .

Billy Miller is a poor blocker, and average recieving TE. he had numbers in the texans first year because there was noone else on the offense, not because he was a good player.

Bruenner was a good blocker. At this point in his career, he is mediocore because of age and previous injuires.

the only "wasted" pick is Joppru because of bad luck injury and he is still an if.

In 3 years we picked one TE in the draft. The Texans have not invested a lot of money not draft picks in the position and have the mediocore results to show for it. The production from this position is adequate at best.

At what position do the Texans have worse overall talent?

I agree AT. It would not shock me to see a first day TE pick at all and I'd be a bit surprised if we didn't draft one. We have extremely average talent at this position, and we cannot even run the offenses we wanted to run when we were working on our two TE sets in training camp. In today’s NFL this is a critical position and it is hard to fill because of the limited body-type (fairly rare athletes...ie power/size guys with good hands and speed). Kansas City took Kris Wilson on the first day when they had Gonzo. The Pats took a first rd TE when they had Graham already and the Colts took at first day TE when they were loaded at this spot also. No way we go into next year without a multi-skill TE. Right now we have nothing but average, one-trick ponies.

those college basketball players that make great tight ends are undersized power forwards, 6'4 -6'6 and 245lbs-265lbs... good soft hands and good speed. Antonio Gates all the way...

billy miller's inability to block is all the more excentuated because of our offensive line and their poor pass blocking. its effected his time on the field and his status in this offense as a legitimate reciever. already fans in here consider him a poor blocker (no arrgument) AND a poor reciever.

i have the feeling if the texan's stand pat in free agency with their offensive line we will be drafting a tightend on the first day.

From Grid's link at the top of thread:
Strengths:...Also a good punt returner...
Weaknesses: ...Isn't much of a threat to run after the catch.
So the guy is a good punt returner? But not much of a threat to run after the catch?

Shouldn't these Kiper wannabes get someone to proofread this stuff?

The 4th round has been the lucky round round for the Texans so why not a patch catching TE, a role player who might develop into more but if not it will still justify the pick. I see also ILB falling into this category and maybe WR as well.
