Peerless Price

Where is he now? Has he cleared waivers? Will he sit for the rest of the season?

I'm curious because I wonder if he'll have a tryout for the Texans. When Alanta cut him there were threads here hoping he'd come to the Texans. Now that the Cowboys cut him, he'll be available next year. Would it be worth it for the Texans to bring him in? Could he be a part of the #2 WR we're looking for to help AJ?

We're better off drafting a young WR to go with AJ like Demetrius Williams. Either that, or get Reggie Wayne in FA.

I bring up Price because he shouldn't cost too much. Lots of teams are going to go after Wayne if the Colts release him. And whoever gets him will pay him big bucks. We could get a speedster in at #2 to work with Mathis & Anderson.

On the idea of drafting a WR. I definitly don't think we should use a first day pick on one. So what day 2 WR could come in and play.

Another thought...could we get Reggie Swinton back?

We need to quit being cheap and actually go after a good WR like Wayne. We've been cheap the last 4 years and obviously thats NOT the answer. Time to drop some bills and get Wayne or Demetrius Williams (trust me, this guy is a beast).

We are good enough at wide receiver with Dre, Gaffney (if he comes back), Armstong, and Mathis that I wouldn't spend to much effort/money there until we fix some of our myriad other problems.

uggh. sorry about that. i ment Armstrong. *reading too many pages at once*

Okay. I get why any team would want Wayne. He's a gamer. Of course he would be a big help.

So my question is. Why wouldn't we want Price now if we wanted him then?

Oline
LB
CB
Safety
DLine
TE

these are positions we need to worry about. THere are only two positions on this team which we definatly DONT need help at.. RB, and WR.

good lawd.. people just get OBSESSED with flashy players.

I agree totally.

(Except for Bush, of course!) :)

I agree, WR is not a problem area.

WR could become a problem if Gaffney leaves in free agency. I think he likes it here and I hope he stays. I would consider spending a later draft pick on a WR (4th round on down) if there is a fast one available. It would be cool if we could find another Jerome Mathis-type super fast WR from a small school, hopefully one that can return punts too. Having AJ, Mathis, and Gaffney should be a good trio, and if we can find another speedster in the second day of the draft I'm all for getting one.

we do not have a clear #2 WR. mathis will take a while to even see the field more, and i think price can help us for now.

if he can come in for less than a million for a year or 2 i wouldnt mind bringing him in. gaffney and armstrong arent that deep threat that compliment AJ well IMO.

as for wayne, i dont want him here

I find it kind of fickle that people could be calling for Price to come here after Alanta but not now. Somehow now we're 'set' at WR. Yes. we've got a good reciever corps. Personally, I don't see how having Price on a 1 year incentive deal would hurt our team. He's a legitimate deep threat. Definitly much better than Bradford. Heck cut Bradford (like we did) and sign Price (and don't bring Bradford back).

He can force those safeties back with AJ and then drop Mathis in the slot. We'd have a high speed 3 WR set.

I'm happy with the way our WR corps is right now, but I also think they can be improved.

Two different teams have brought Price in and have cut him after seeing very little results. Atlanta expected him to be a #1 WR which he clearly is not, and Dallas brought him in to be a WR somewhere on their depth chart, certainly not ahead of Keyshawn or Terry Glenn, so Price was intended as a #3 at best and still didn't make it. Obviously that should tell you something about him.

at the begining of the season I think most of us didnt realize that 150 yards passing for a game would be considered a good day through the air. What's the point of having good recievers if we dont get the ball to them? If in the right system I think Price could be put to good use. Seeing how our offense functions I dont see any point bringing him in here anymore.

Nod - agree with what he said!! ^

Another name I would throw out who looks to be FA next year and may be looking for a new team is Torey Holt of the Rams. The rams most likely will be restructuring next year and havea new coach too. IMO hes A pretty darn good veteran WR IMO who could line up as the #2 guy and still has enough speed and moves to make the difference.

Thoughts?

I haven't heard anything about him leaving the Rams and would really doubt they let him go, but he is still a top 10 WR in the NFL so if we could get him that would be great, he might cost a decent bit but it would probably be worth it, especially if Gaffney leaves.

What it says is that the Falcons have a horrible passing attack and that Parcells wasn't serious about using Price as a weapon. It also says that Price wasn't given any kind of chance in Dallas. Price is a great #2. Don't forget his production in Buffalo opposite Moulds. He did what Lee Evans is doing now.

I don't get how people can turn on Price like that. We've had Swinton and let him go. So we obviously thought we could improve from good to better. Heck, this board was even talking about trading for Rod Gardner at one time.

Now Price is out there and can probably be brought in for about what it would cost to pay a day 2 draft pick. He'll get the vet minimum or maybe a tiny bit more. He'll definitly play better than a rookie.

I've been reading about how he just needs to go through a teams whole offseason program to get established again.

Heck, look at Koren Robinson. The Vikings took a flyer on him. They're paying him the veteran minimum and look what he's doing for them. Price could be like that for the Texans. With little to no signing bonus, what could it hurt?

Lots of upside. Minimal downside.

the way i see it is he runs routes better than mathis, catches better than bradford, and should be cheaper.

dallas has a different offense than us where we typically run out of 3wr, 1te, 1 rb. not that i know about dallas since i dont watch "that team" but besides their 2 receivers you named, they dont have much beyond that (glenn and johnson combine for 112 catches while the rest of their WRs have 19 total catches.)

Dallas already had Johnson and Glenn at 1 & 2. Patrick Crayton had established himself as #3 so Price was default #4 in that offense.

We still have a hole at #2 that we rotate WRs thru. Price could at least bring us some stability there while Mathis matures (who I see as definitly our #2 as he gets better...and he will)

The texans could use peerless so much
It would be graet if he came to houston:yahoo:

He had one good year in Buffalo with Moulds taking a lot of the attention and with Bledsoe chunking the ball up 45 times a game so he had some inflated stats. If we can get Price for cheap then I wouldn't have a problem with it but I wouldn't expect him to fix much either. I have seen very little 3WR sets out of us this year and we will have a new coach and system next year. My thing with bringing in Price if Gaffney stays is I think Gaffney and Price are relatively similar (Price is probably a little faster but maybe not as good of hands) and we obviously want to work Mathis in more as a WR so unless we are going to run a lot of 4 WR sets someone is going to consistently get bumped out.

My point exactly, he got beat out by a 2nd year WR who has a total of 30 catches in almost two full years. Doesn't speak overly good of him.

Which is exactly what we want to have happen. We want to be able to make defenses pay for double teaming AJ all game. If they want to treat AJ like Randy Moss, Price and eventually Mathis will be able to make them pay.

exactly. what can he expect in the offseason? i don't think he'll be like Peter Boulware who got a good offer here, but kept wanting to get paid big money when he was 'unproven' now Price is 'unproven' he's had a couple bad seasons in Atlanta, but who wouldn't? Is Jenkins or White tearing it up there? They're both talented WRs but they don't have much production.

the way i see it is get a WR corps like the Vikings. They had Williamson, M. Robinson, Burleson and Taylor before they brought K. Robinson on a flyer (which is all i want to try on price) and look what happened. KRob stepped up his game and he's definitly a threat for the Vikings.

Another thing I want for the Texans is for ALL players to earn their position, even AJ. We spent this season with players starting who shouldn't be and good players not getting playing time. I believe in Mathis, that he'll come in and establish himself as a threat. I don't want to give him anything though. We can see what happens when a coach thinks any particular player 'has' to do something when they haven't earned it or worse obviously lost it.

He didn't get beat out by Crayton. He never had the chance to compete. Parcells never really used him. He came in for just a few series a game. Crayton had a lock on the #3 spot from training camp and was performing well so what motivation did Parcells have to demote Crayton for Price?

I say give Price a chance and see if he can't be like Koren Robinson.

i just want pressure of AJ and i think he would be the best option for us at this point in time because he would be cheap. bradford is constantly left 1 on 1 because he cant get open and drops the easy grabs letting them slide the coverage to AJs side.

3 WR used to be our main offensive package if im not mistaken. im sure that was changed over the offseason with the new timing routes and again since pendrys inception.

Sorry bout that - thought it was holt - but it was Isaac Bruce I was thinking of and heres the blurb and link.

• "I don't know if the new Rams' coach will want to keep [wide receiver] Isaac Bruce next year. If not, some team ought to sign him at least as a No. 3 guy, because he can still make plays."

I'm all for bringing Price in for little cash. I'm sure if given 1/2 a chance he can help out AJ and Mathis seeing as he's a veteran. He might even learn a thing or two off of AJ or our OC. He can't hurt and we don't atm have a legitiamte TE threat to throw to (like there was at Dallas and Atlanta: Jason Witten anyone???) so there are more balls that could be thrown his way. You don't have to pay the guy big $ because I'm sure he knows he won't get it but would be willing to come to a team where he would get a decent shot at a roster spot if he really wanted to put the time and effort in... :twocents:

Just curious as to what happened to Peerless????

He was a good WR at first, then Wham he took a nose dive. Was it an injury, or did he think he was so good, but wasn't worth a hoot, bad team?

Peerless Price - a condensed history.

Price had a breakout year in 2002 on the Bills and the Falcons traded a 1st rounder to acquire him. He languished on the Falcons in 03 & 04 because the Falcons are still working on Vick's passing attack. Also, he's an ideal #2 deep threat. He's not a possession receiver. So Atlanta cut him and Parcells decided to see if any of the chemistry between Bledsoe and Price, that they had in Buffalo, was still there. Price was never really given a chance in Dallas. He hadn't had the Cowboys offseason to compete or benifit. And the Cowboys already had committed to WRs 1,2 & 3 - Johnson, Glenn & Crayton. So Price started out as their #4 WR. He did play #3 for a few games while Crayton was injured. During his 7 games in Dallas he managed a 16.0 yd recieving average. Not the best in the league, but definitly respectable. Bradford has gone from 15.5 to 19.2 to 14.8 to 10.7 in his four years with the Texans. So back to Price. For whatever reason, Parcells wasn't committed to including Price in his passing attack so he was cut. Now he's an FA who could come in and contribute for us without costing a lot.

The Cowboys actually have a TE and a very good one they throw too. I questioned why they signed Price when they did and it didn't surprise me that he didn't work out there. He wasn't really given much of a chance when Crayton got well enough to play.

Because Crayton is a better WR. Price is not as good as D Armstrong.

I haven't watched enough of Crayton play to compare the two. As far as Armstrong, lets compare what they do. Personally I'd like to have them both. As far as I can tell, Armstrong is a great possession. Incredible hands. I loved the catches he made in games late last season.

Price is more of a burner than a possession reciever. That's one reason why he had problems in Atlanta. They had him run into traffic instead of deep. He's not going to win jump balls over SS, CB & LB like AJ can. He's the guy that goes deep that forces the safety to choose who he's going to give single coverage too. Look at what Lee Evans does on a good day. That's what Price use to do and can do for us. Yes Mathis will eventually take over this role, but he still needs time to develop. I feel that he'll get more and more playing time in the new regime as his game gets better. He has had some drops.

The biggest part of my post is that it will cost us little to find out if he can contribute or not. Probably just the vet minimum with incentives.

Price is faster than Armstrong but I don't know if he has better hands or not. Armstrong will be a restricted free agent so we can sign him back next year for very cheap, chearper than we can likely get Price. Johnson is obviously a stud, Gaffney is not especially fast but he has great hands and finds a way to get open, and Mathis has tremendous speed and is coming into his own and should be a good WR next year with proper coaching all offseason and increased reps. My problem with bringing Price in is he's going to be the #4 WR here too, unless you want to bump Mathis down for him and that would be a big mistake. Gaffney is a free agent this year and could leave, but I think we like him and he likes it here and he hasn't been able to put up great numbers in our system so he won't get a ton of attention from other teams, and I am quite sure he'll stay here. If you don't think Gaffney is a quality #2 WR (I think he is if we'd use him properly and have some kind of reasonable passing game) there will be better WRs available than Price who would actually come in and expect to be a #2 WR (Reggie Wayne, maybe Isaac Bruce, it sounds like Eric Moulds will be released in the offseason, etc.) so if we're going to bother to bring in a WR at least make it one that has had more than one good year, even if it will cost us a little more money.

If Price was as good as you guys say....teams would be crawling all over themselves to pick him up...you guys severely overvalue him due to name recognition.

I think the roll you are describing is exactly what Mathis can do. I think with new coaching and another offseason, training camp and preseason he'll be ready to step in as a full-time WR in addition to KR. He has had a couple drops this year but he's had some nice catches too, and I know if you saw the Cleveland game you had to like that opening drive where we finally threw the ball deep and he smoked the CB deep on just a 34 yard pass and made a tough over-the-shoulder grab with the guy right in his face, so he has some serious speed and pretty good hands, and those will get better with more reps this year and during the offseason, and he should be running routes a lot better next year too. I also think Price will want more than the veteran minimum, maybe not a ton more but after the money he's gotten in the past I'm guessing he'll want a decent amount.

Vinny said:

Very true, after his time in Atlanta no one was going after him, Parcells finally took a chance on him after the regular season had already started and it didn't last long. Why do you think Buffalo so eagerly agreed to send him away. I'm not taking anything away from that season he had there, but when Moulds is attracting a lot of attention and you have Drew Bledsoe setting records for passing attempts in a season, if you're a decent WR you're going to catch a lot of passes.
