pbat488's Mock Draft

mr. peebs

gig 'em
the combine has me in a mocking mood, so here we go..

1) Robert Quinn - DE/LB - North Carolina
This is a stretch for me because it's very likely he will be gone before we get a chance to pick him; however I'm hoping some QBs and OTs can move up the board and make teams ahead of us disregard their big board's and make a stupid selection!! If he does drop, he becomes our bookend OLB across from Barwin and will excel at both stopping the run and rushing the passer in Wade's 34.

2) Marvin Austin - DT - North Carolina
Suspended for the season due to illegal interactions with an agent. Not a prototypical NT in a 34's size but has the athleticism and strength to play in Wade's scheme, much like Jay Ratliff on the Cowboys.

3) Quinton Carter - S - Oklahoma
Slots in as starting FS, though has the ability to play either spot interchangeably. Great character off the field and would be an asset to have in locker room.

4) Kris O'Dowd - C - USC
The heir apparent to Myers at center. Started as a true freshman at USC and made calls for four years. Athletic and savvy enough to pick up and handle our blocking schemes easily.

5) Casey Matthews - ILB - Oregon
Stealing this pick from others because it makes too much sense not to. Great bloodline, great value, great depth behind DeMeco and Cush.

6) Devon Torrance - CB - Ohio State

Mostly fit to be a Cover 2 corner, but would be good for some coverage packages Wade likes to implement. Mostly picked because he is already in the Astros organization so figured I'd keep him close to home; plus we all know how Smithiak loves to take flyers on CBs in the draft...

7) Ryan Donahue - P - Iowa
Turk is old.

as always, comments and criticisms are appreciated, as this is all a learning process to get to know players better throughout the draft!

If we know Quinn will be off the board why mock him to Texans unless you have a trade up scenero?

Marvin Austin does not fit 3-4 plus has character issues Texans would pass on.

Carter would be excellent but doubt he's still there.

Kris O'Dowd would be sweet here but doubt Texans address Center this high.

Casey Matthews is off the board.

Devon Torrence has excellent size for position, not a bad pick at all here if still available?

Ryan Donahue does address need. I've used draft picks in the past on a kicker but with so many quality undrafted free agent kickers available Texans will spend it on an acutall football position like developmental NG, OT/OG or OLB. They will sign one of those undrafted kickers too, maybe its Ryan?

Good draft.

1) I am on the fence about Quin though. He has talent, but is he a loose enough athlete to be OLB? His combine results are promising, so I hope the Texans do their due diligence.

2) And I am going to take the opposite position than my partner in mock crime, I think Austin could fit as 3-4 nose. If Wade's career has shown anything, it is that he is flexible with the type of NT for his scheme. Austin has good size, good strength and good athleticism. If he has his head on straight, this is a good pick.

3) I love the Carter pick, but I dont think he lasts this long. Deaunta Williams is the best FS available. He would be a first rounder without the suspension and injury. Although, that would make 3 straight UNC players.

4) I would take O'Dowd. Not a sexy pick, but necessary. I also share BL's concerns that the Texans wont go C this high, but OL needs to be addressed.

5) I am less thrilled with Matthews. I think people are getting carried away with the name. I know I did, I mocked him around this slot a couple months ago. However, when I try to take an unbiased look at the film, he is unspectacular.

6) Late round pick, cant really argue it. I would probably go in another direction, but no biggie.

7) I dont especially like drafting punters, but again, it is a 7th, hard to argue. I would probably go another direction, but again, not a biggie.

Thanks for the response. As for Quinn, nobody knows if he will be off the board or not. I have a sneaking suspicion that some OTs or QBs will force themselves up teams draft boards and be selected higher than us outsiders foresee, which would cause some players to drop to us. I was torn between picking Quinn or Amukamura here, as I see one of those two being the most likely to drop to us.

As for Austin, I never thought of him as a 34 nose until watching him at the combine, and he looks like a replica of Jay Ratliff to me. I think he would be absolutely perfect for how Wade runs his defense and I'm really hoping we give him a solid look to seek out any of the suspected character issues he might have.

In my first edition I had McDaniel from Clemson here in the third, then decided he'd move up so switched to Williams, but figured three straight NC players makes me look obsessed so I switched to Carter. However I was very happy with taking Williams here as well.

Good draft.

Thanks for the response. O'Dowd seems perfect for what we run as far as blocking schemes, so hoping the Texans really take a hard look at him because he is an instant upgrade over Myers (who isn't as terrible as people make him out to be) as soon as he learns how to make our calls.

To be honest, the last three rounds I just kind of randomly made picks because it was late and I hadn't thought it out much. Would've liked to waited till after today's DB combine before making a CB selection cause I feel we will always select at least one athletic CB with size we can stash on ST and try to develop.

Matthews is very much stolen from other's drafts, literally no thought went into that pick other than we need ILB depth and he's projected to be drafted in that area and is related to Clay and others have him here. voila!

Punter and CB pick are just a crapshoot cause who knows what the hell we'll do back there. Probably have a TE or QB prospect who Kubiak tries to make the next coming of Elway but eventually flames out and on to the next one..

Anyways, thanks for the responses you two, I'll be updating my mock as I learn more about players and really fine-tune the later rounds of my draft instead of just kind of picking players at random.

I think if we go OL we will go OG.

Myers gets graded as one of our better lineman, I don't think he is the issue.

As for Matthews, I am weary of him being overhyped because of his bloodline.

Positionally, I think the first three picks are good, not sure if the players are the right ones or if they will be there when we select.

Then again, Carter just ran a 4.6 40. That probably drops him to the 3rd, unless he makes it up at the pro day.
