Per source, and as @JayGlazer reported, the Patriots have agreed to deal G Logan Mankins to the Bucs for a pick and TE Tim Wright.
...

Heard that Tim Wright looks really athletic.

Patriots will receive Bucs' fourth-round pick in 2014 in additon to TE Tim Wright in exchange for G Logan Mankins.

Mike Reiss ✔ @MikeReiss
Just last night at Patriots annual premiere event, Mankins shared stage with Brady, Wilfork & Mayo for roundtable. Adds to shock of move.

At first glance, it's a WTF. 2nd glance, it's the Patriots getting rid of a high cap player soon enough to get something for him. And of course, there's probably a few things going on that we don't, and won't ever learn about.

It's the Patriots.

An undrafted TE the size of AJ and a 4th for a perennial probowler AND ALLPRO and they are losing cap space to do it. Something's whack and the Patriots OL just took a huge hit.

How do they lose cap space? Saved $2.5m towards 2014 cap and cleared his $11m (2015) and $7m (2016) cap hits off the books. Brought in a young TE that could fill the "move TE" role who is making a little less than $500k this year.

He had a $10 mil cap hit for the Patriots this year if he stayed. He is now $12.25 mil in dead space on their cap.

In the Mankins/Wright trade, Pats will gain over $2M in cap space and TB will use over $6M to add him. Doubt Pats got a high pick from Bucs

Pats have some young guys to step up.

Wright might fill the Move TE spot opened by Hernandez.

4th rounder pretty decent sweetener.

How do you figure that? He is a $4.25m cap hit in 2014 and $4m cap hit in 2015 for New England; after this trade. He had 2 years at $4m per year of pro-rated bonus left.

New England saves $6.25m this year and $7m in 2015 towards the cap.

It's what spotrac has. I'm talking about cap not dollars spent. This year for New England he would have had a cap of $6.25 mil in base + 250k workout (which he has probably already been paid) + $4 mil prorated signing = $10.5 mil cap hit if he had stayed in NE. They now have to suck up 3 years of prorated signing bonus which has not appeared on their cap at $4 mil per year + the 250k workout bonus they have paid = $12.25 mil in dead money/workout bonus. If they get to split the dead money then it will be $4.25 this season and $8 mil next season. So fine in that case he won't actually cost more cap space but the point is there is a ton of dead money. It's not enough to justify getting rid of an allpro, not a just got lucky one year allpro, an every season allpro.

But will he pass his physical? I think New England knows something that Tampa Bay does not.

That's not what Spotrac has. He didn't have 3 years of pro-rated money left, feel free to double check spotrac yourself. He had 3 years left on his contract but only 2 years of pro-rated money left over. His contract was 6 years, but you can only pro-rate signing bonus money for 5 years max. Again it is only $4.25m dead this year and $4m next year.

Patriots obviously fill like that have a player than can back-fill this year. And they get a player that could potentially fill a big need for their offensive system. Add in another 4th rounder they can use to move around in the draft like they usually do.

They've changed the page but let's go with that - $8.25 mil in dead money. That was the last of my points anyway. Dude is one of the best in the league and the anchor of their OL. Performance wise I think it will be a large slip.

What player are you talking about? - the 220 lb TE? If that works out I want the Texans to play AJ at WR for another 3 seasons and then play him at TE for another 10 after that.

OTC hasn't updated their page if you want to reference that.

Yes I think Tim Wright could be a viable slot TE type of player for NE.

Shannon Sharp was barely bigger than that. Not that it makes your point any weaker since his size was aberrant.

BB on LM...
Bill Belichick on former Patriots G Logan Mankins: "Logan Mankins is everything we would ever want in a football player(but didn't). It is hard to imagine a better player at his position(except guys we kept), a tougher competitor or a person to represent our program(but not anymore). He is one of the all-time great Patriots(past tense) and the best guard I ever coached(just not lately). Logan brought a quiet(especially quiet now) but unmistakable presence and leadership that will be impossible to duplicate. Unfortunately, this is the time of year when difficult decisions have to be made - and this is one of the most difficult we will ever make - but like every other decision it was made for what we feel is in the best interests of the team.”
:kitten:

Wright looked decent last season where the Bucs had no other options at TE. Some were questioning if he were even going to make the team this season.

The Bucs had to do something. They were horrible at the guard position. Wright IMO was a throw away that wasn't going to see the field much this season (barring injuries). The Bucs are in good shape with the cap situation.

So I am glad they pulled the trigger and apparently addressed this issue to some extent. It is probably a better move than signing Ingognito.

However as Vinny is hinting at, there could be some underlying issue with Mankins.

"Could be a viable" TE v. well established IS an allpro G. See the problem?

I just suspect something more is going on because I do not think it makes any sense as a straight evaluation of the trade.

I know. And what started out somewhat as a joke about AJ really isn't. Sharpe and AJ are spot on size wise.

I look at it more of as Patriots received a 4th rounder for an aging (still productive) guard that had a very high cap number. Salary dump. Tim Wright was just an additional asset to grease the wheels; if Wright doesn't work out it doesn't hurt the Patriots. Reports are that Tampa was initially going after Boone with SF but SF wanted too much in return. I think both sides did well here.

Mankins played an entire season on a torn ACL a couple of years ago. Plus NE usually gets the best of these deals when they trade their past stars so I'm a cynic on this one. Logan Mankins...it's only a flesh wound.

I wouldn't say that at all. BB is garbage as a GM. The only reason why he gets all of these props is because he has arguably the best QB of all time. When Brady retires, he'll be just as average as any HC. As far as being a GM he hasn't been good at all since the off season where they landed Moss and Welker. He let go of Seymour which was extremely dumb. They lost a great pass rusher and never really filled that void and their defense was crap for years. All BB ever did was stockpile picks year after year, but never did a whole lot with them. He allowed Welker to walk all so he could go to their main rival who beat them in the playoffs when Brady desperately needed help, and he has been terrible at replacing Moss at the wideout position. They literally get a new guy every year at that position and Brady is forced to make it work.

A 4th rounder isn't worth crap in my eyes. Those guys are a total crap shoot. I'll never understand why people think that these mid round draft picks are worth much. The majority of those players end up not amounting to much.

Thank you. The Patriots basically got face saving compensation to cover dumping an excellent player. Maybe someone needs to accuse Kraft of being cheap.

They are cheap as hell. They have been for years. For some reason they get all of this nice exposure from previous deals, but they've had quite a few that were really foolish, and didn't make a lot of sense. They won those SB's though and BB thought he could pencil in just any ole guy in his system and that Brady could work with whatever they give him. That trade they made to get rid of Seymour was a pretty foolish move. Seymour had several good years left I'm him at the time.

An additional 4th rounder could be used as part of package to move around in the draft.

Maybe this was a contributing factor per Roto:

The Patriots asked Logan Mankins to take a pay cut before trading him to the Bucs.
Mankins was scheduled to make $6.25 million this season and $6.75 million in both 2015 and 2016. He wisely balked at a cut, knowing plenty of teams would be willing to pay for a borderline Hall of Fame guard that's been a top-10 run-blocker in PFF's grades for seven straight years

That may very well be their reasoning. I think that's very unwise for one of their 4-5 best players and their OL just got considerably worse. He was well paid because he is one of the best. He wasn't overpaid.

Being able to sign your 29 yr old SHUTDOWN CORNER and removing a $25 million cap hit from your 2015 salary cap TRUMPS trading your your 32 yr old Pro Bowl OG. That is all!
