Patriots/Texans game flexed to Sunday Night Football

Awwww hell. Time to put that "1" behind the dash on their record. Bills will be a tough challenge with all those weapons next week.

And I'm starting a new job in NYC this week. Looks like I'll be late on Monday morning. I hate the east coast for sports.

This is huge!! The entire city needs to get to this game and rev up so hard! If we win next week, this game would be a huge opportunity. Put the quarters in the bottles, bring the noise makers. Do whatever! Make as loud as possible fans! We will do to Brady what we did to Ryan back in 11! Wooo!

Well now, we seemed to have garnered the interest of the NFL. Are the Texans really that special? The defense is looking really solid, the offense is being especially opportunistic, but is it real yet? Can they do this every week? Because if they can, then I see the NFL's interest in the Texans as a very solid dark horse in the playoffs.

We've done it 4 weeks in a row, so why not.....

We are playing like the Texans they saw on Hard Knocks so it only makes sense that they want to pin JJ Watt vs Tom Brady now that we're winning.

I was traveling for work for our only other Sunday night game at NRG back in 2012 when we got smoked by the Packers. I hope we play a lot better than that since I will be at this game.

This season is starting to feel a little like the 1993 Oilers. I was there for the Sunday nighter against the Jets in which Buddy punched Gilbride in the face. Will we see dejavu with RAC punching Godsey against the Pats :)

Oh god no! A first round exit also came with that season

OOoooo Vikings vs Cards is not compelling enough ..???? ........ maybe cus those two cities are not has big has Houston and Boston ..????

Redskins vs Da bears would make more sense but I guess no one wants to see the redskins play LOL

Maybe Denver vs raiders but those are two West coast teams so I could see why

Yep they choose Us and there fav team Patriots

To be realistic, they chose NE and we just happened to be playing them. Of course, JJ was a factor.

They discussed this on the radio last week. They said each network (CBS/FOX) is able to protect one game from being flexed so sometimes it's NBC's 2nd or 3rd choice,
I didn't remember this stipulation in the flex rules.

Gronk going down just now might have made this game a touch easier
Hopefully so.

In the NFL section, yesterday I posted:

Gronk doesn't look like he sustained an ACL...........looked more like a hyperextension of the knee.......his foot did not seem planted, so most likely a PCL.

If this indeed ends up being a lower grade PCL tear, Gronk, with his work ethic and determination, could possibly be back with a brace anywhere from 3-6 weeks. Many athletes with a grade II cannot return short of ~8 weeks. Naturally, this type of early return would strongly be dependent on the extent of the injury. Even so, full rehab strength is not achieved until at least 8-12 weeks. So no matter what, Gronk's performance should he be able to play against us can be expected to be compromised.

Vikings v Cards wouldn't have been eligible to be flexed because it's a Thursday night game.

From this still shot, Gronk's injury may turn out to be an LCL. It appears that he was not hit front on, rather on the inner/medial aspect of the knee. If grade I, could be out as little as 1-2 weeks. It grade II, probably closer to 2-4 weeks. He will still likely wear a brace when he returns. Will have to await MRI results later today.

the latest rumor mongering is saying one week...

THIS JUST IN: MRI shows Rob Gronkowski has bruised knee, no tears. He's considered week to week. (via @diannaESPN)

Later...............

Essentially, the correct interpretation is that Gronk sustained a bruise on the medial/inner side of his knee from the direct impact..........and a grade I LCL sprain (from the secondary stress created to the lateral/outer side of his knee).

The figure below demonstrates this type of trauma/injury to the right knee.

This just ******* sux. I'll be on my 2nd week on the job in NYC. Football season sux ball sacks on the East coast.

Shefter (sp?) just said that Gronk will probably miss the game against the Texans.

Thanks for the update. Goes along with grade II sprain (which, as opposed to what is being thrown out there [playing with words]........it is a tear]).

He is the only player that I've seen do this type of thing..I wonder if it has anything to do with when Gronk re-broke his arm that 1 year b/c he came back a little too early. The family probably knows that the Patriots & Bill Belichick unethically play games with the injury report & perhaps put too much pressure on guys to try to return from injury for fear of being cut.

I think Clowney is the only OLB who can cover gronk 1 on 1 ........... we shall see

Itd be weird if they flexed us two weeks in a roll. Steelers/Broncos makes more sense, if they then flexed out the Steelers/Ravens game the next week.

I'm guessing Steelers/Broncos is the protected game for CBS so that one is not even an option to flex. Bears/Vikings is the only other game I see with the possibility to get flexed. And that will depend on what the Fox protected game is.

Has a team ever been flexed to be on SNF 2 weeks in a row?

Gronk does not need to worry about being cut. With that said, 6 weeks (when he returned to play) if healing is confirmed by x-ray still places that bone at risk for fracture, as full strength healing may not occur for 3-6 months. However, the increased risk would be at the old site of fracture. Following his original ulnar bone forearm fracture, Gronk underwent surgery to repair the second fracture in his forearm, which involved replacing the original hardware. The break was in a different location on the ulna than the original fracture, just above the location of the original plate, a phenomenon that is not uncommon when plates are used. (Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith sustained a similar adjacent second forearm fracture in a plated arm fracture.)

Forearm bones will evenly distribute stress throughout the length of the bone (ie., very slightly bend). When a plate is in placed (as in the pic below of a plated ulna fracture), since a plate has no ability to bend to any degree, the stress on the bone is concentrated a each end of the plate, making it a perfect setup for a fracture at those sites (bone weaker than metal).

With this "statement" by the Pats and Gronk family, in addition to the LCL 2-4 week prediction, it is likely that the bruise to his knee may be hidden code for bone bruise rather than typical soft tissue bruise that would initially come to mind, putting in an additional unpredictable factor into his recovery of at least 2-4 weeks..........and making his return for the Texans game less likely.......and if he does play, even more likely to be significantly compromised.
