Pat Kirwan's final mock (three rounds)

stingray

Hall of Fame
I like the first two not so much the third....

20. Houston Texans
Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
Wilson is a very confident guy who claims he's the best corner in the draft. Wilson is not afraid to come up and make a tackle, and is also a fine return man. His week at the Senior Bowl helped his draft status immensely.

51. Houston Texans
Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech
The Texans skipped over a running back in the first round and now grab a guy who averaged 6.2 yards per carry and scored 35 times in his college career. He has Jonathan Stewart skills.

81. Houston Texans
Al Woods, DT, LSU
At 6-foot-4 and 309 pounds, Woods is a decent "one-technique" tackle to play in a rotation, especially on run downs.

Sign me up. Although I would rather take a safety in round 3.

I'm good with this mock, I don't understand the safety thing...

In years past, I could understand the debate. But Eugene Wilson & Bernard Pollard ought to give us at least another year or two to get a Safety.

I don't recall ever seeing a "Where does Eugene Wilson stand right now?" thread.

Who do we have behind Eugene Wilson and Bernard Pollard? I dont know about you but I dont want to be one injury away from seeing John Busing or Bryan Russell starting for our team.

Exactly. As it stands right now, one injury to a player in our secondary could very well mean the end of our season. Its just that thin back there.

I'm ok with the first 2 picks but Al Woods in the 3rd sucks, IMO he's a 4th or 5th rounder for depth and rotation only. I'd also rather see a FS or OG/C in the 3rd.

I think Woods is probably a 3rd rounder

Much rather have Houston or Troup

If you really want to fix the running game you go
1 Mike Iupati, G, Idaho or Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida
2 John Jerry, G/OT, Mississippi
3 Montario Hardesty, RB, Tennessee

Now this ignores the defense backs that are there... but your running game would improve.

Who do we have in front of Amobi & Cody?

It would be nice to have one starter in front of them.

Just one...

Are we expecting Hardesty to be the guy, or the 3rd down guy?

Don't get why people on the board seem high on Wilson. He's not terrible ,but it's not like he has the position sewed up.

http://www.nfl.com/players/eugenewilson/profile?id=WIL686587

Looking at the past two seasons he hasn't even finished or started one healthy. In the mean time we've been stuck hoping guys like Busing, Barber and Nick Ferguson could hold the spot down.

No qualms about Pollard. The cat brings it.

He has a lot of nice runs but I don't think he's an NFL player. I think his balance is inconsistent. Also, if you watch how many times he lands very hard and awkwardly on the turf, without being hit hard, you get a sense of why he has injury problems. I think balance at RB is key. When a back has good balance, then a CB hitting his shin at 8 yards won't send him flopping to the turf. Or, when he busts through the line, he won't basically trip forward and tackle himself for an 8 yard gain if his balance is right.

Not only would I draft guys like Tate and Dwyer before Hardesty, but I'd draft Alex Henderson from Northern Arizona well before I'd consider Hardesty.

I would take Tate, Gerhardt, or Hardesty before Dwyer who's got good size but dosen't run as if he did.

Dom Barber?

I'm not saying we don't need a safety, but it's not the end of the world if we don't pick a safety in the first three rounds. Especially if we draft a CB in the first, like this mock says.

Afterall, that leaves us with Wilson, Quin, Reeves, McCain, Bennett, Molden, and other possible picks/FA at CB. That opens up the possibility of trying either Molden or Quin at FS. It also doesn't preclude us from drafting a FS in the 4th.

There are plenty of viable options at S behind Wilson if we don't draft a S in the first 3 rounds.

I hope the Texans go with Gerhart or Tate in the 2nd. I'd be very disappointed if either were there and they picked Dwyer instead. Hardesty would be a great pick too but with his injury history (knee surgeries) I'd stay away. If he were still around in the 4th he would definitely be worth the pick, but I don't think he will fall that far. As for Dwyer, he has some question marks, especially about his weight. Here is a quote about Dwyer from his former coach from Walterfootball.

2/27/10: Bills head coach Chan Gailey expressed some concern about Jonathan Dwyer's ability to keep his weight under control: "He’s always fought the weight problem every year since high school." And Gailey is Dwyer's former coach. Dwyer was 5-11, 229 at the Combine weigh-in, but had been overweight this past season.

This sounds like he could be another Ron Dayne. Not sure we want to have that again. Can't afford to lose any more O-linemen! :shades:

Im not high on Wilson, but between drafting a CN, RB, DT or FS, I think FS is much more covered than the other 3.

1) Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Indiana (PA), 6’ 207

I'll pass on the first round golden boys and take this guy in the second. won't be dimes bit of difference between them. Except you're over paying for the same talent.

Good call. I have been pushing Ansah for long time as I did Kyle Wilson and watched both climb. Ansah has played some FS in his school's defense and has addressed the "won't tackle" criticism as saying the defense focused on others making tackle while he mirrored the WR. I am hoping he will be there in 3rd but not surprised if selected higher.

If you take a look at last year's numbers we did ok, actually we did pretty good in stopping the run. After the first 2-3 games of course. Our secondary is the weak link. And with the pass heavy offenses we will face EVERY week we need more help in the secondary.

I am fine with that, but do think the 2nd might be a little high for this guy.

What the Texans are going to do in the first 2 rounds, and what we think they should do have generally been 2 different things.

I think they want to plug that CB hole first and foremost. If Haden and Wilson, hell maybe even McCourtey and Robinson are there at #20 they might pull the trigger.

Kubiak is much more impressed about Dominque Barber than I am.

I guess it depends on how bad you think Reeves, Moulden, and Fred Bennet sucks. His numbers are ripe and the guy has thrity five inch arms. he is a bona fide gorilla armed CB prospect. that makes the guys functional palying height about eight foot. Unless he is a wonder lick moron they should have him on line by September. I'm not saying Cb isn't a need. I'm saying we're over paying for talent with a Cb in the first. Bang another hole and come away with two starters instead of one.

Aren't you basically drafting Molden and Bennett?

Hot prospects from lower levels of competition, that have tools but have never faced anyone worth a damn?

Signed Kenny Houston, Donnie Shell, and Darrel Green.

the kid has great numbers. And guess what the top guys bust out too. we got a shorty in Grover Quinn. I think Brice is more than a fair nickle. We need a long John on the right. and there ain't one in the top five. You go with two shorties and every WCO team we meet will run us out of the park.

Just pointing out the guys you say may suck, are similar in their backgrounds to the guy you want us to reach for the in the second.
