Pass Blocking versus Run Blocking

Jack Bauer

Rookie
I keep seeing in threads that our lines sucks, so Bush would not have any success with the Texans. Can we put this to rest? The offensive line actually is good at run blocking. Pass protection is where the line fails. Run blocking and pass blocking are two totally different things.

I just wanted to get that off my chest. Thanks.

I agree. In fact, I would say our emphasis on signing/drafting run-blocking linemen has caused us to have a ton of guys that are above average to good run blockers and bad pass blockers. You put 5 of those together and, well, you see the results.

I do not believe people have a problem with the run blocking (though it could definately improve, theres always room for imporvement), but people do seem to question how Bush will keep Carr on his feet. Arguements include that the defense has to stay back becuase of the threat of Bush (personally, I don't think NFL defenses give a rip about a highly touted rookie) and that Bush is a decent pass blocker. I am not so sure about the blitz pickups of Bush, but there are smarter football people here than me. Since Carr touches the ball 60-70 times a game, it is important for him to be as healthy as possible, and most people agree blockers will help this more than a running back. Just a couple thoughts.

you are also forgetting the TE part to that factor. Our running game is good but pass blocking is horrible... The TE will help the OL out... The only way to put this to end is to wait til the FA and get a TE and some inner OL plus a RT.

I am referring to the posts that take the stance like this:

Why are we drafting Bush? He will just get killed. Our O line is terrible, we can't block for nothing.

or

Domanick Davis gets his yards with the same offensive line. The offensive line is not the problem, it is Carr.

These are not my opinions. These are the ones I have seen on the board that make no sense to me.

I am not saying that everyone is saying this. I just see it a lot. I think the people who post this do not understand that a good run blocking lineman isn't necessarily a good pass blocker.

Fair enough. However I do not think Nush will be able to get the same type of yards that DD does. Davis will head into a pile and move it until it stops. That will never happen with Bush, he's just not that kind of runner. The thing about Bush is that while DD hits a hole and hits a man for 4-6 yard gain, Bush dances around to find a hole, hits a large one created by his incredibly talented OL at USC and then when he gets downfield also relies on blocking from his recievers. Davis rarely requires that, so I am not sure how good any of our recievers are at blocking. It's also possible, even if no one gives credit, that Davis has made our line look really good becuase he does push the pile for those extra yards, while the OL is actually just average to slightly above average.

Truth is however.....teams haven't had to play many guys in the box to limit the Texans from moving the ball. One....they get sacks on Carr with only 3 or 4 guys rushing the QB, which is downright sad. I do see teams however cover the pass more than they do the run. Andre Johnson is completely covered...as are the other receivers. Teams aren't scared of Dominick Davis and that's why I think he gets as many yards as he does. If teams actually played 7 guys in the box, covering the run, Davis wouldn't get the yards he gets.

What would happen in fact is that opposing defenses would HAVE TO play at least 7 guys in the box because of the threat Bush would be. This would relieve some of the coverage up top on Houston's receivers, allowing the passing game to bloom. They would have to acknowledge Bush and this let Carr gun it to Johnson. Once Carr starts nailing those DBs through the air....they'd have to respect the passing game....take guys outside of the box to cover the pass....this would thus relieve down under, allowing Bush to put on a show.

Right now....opposing Ds aren't scared of Davis. They cover the pass more-so than the run. That's why we couldn't get very much through the air this year....that's why Carr would hold on to the ball so much, hoping for one of his guys to get open somehow, running back to him, as they should, but haven't been coached to do. This is why Carr also gets sacked....trying to find an open WR, aside from defenders rushing in on him in a heart beat with that swiss cheese passing O-line, poor excuse of protection. Teams these past years have gotten to Carr with just their 3 or 4 linemen, respectively however. If they tighten the line up.......Bush & Davis will open up the passing game or vice-versa, the passing game will open up the run game. They go hand in hand.

A player like Bush would actually be very successful in the Denver system because of his cut back abilities.

Perhaps our coaching staff chose to acquire players that suited the Dom Capers desired style of play: ball control offense with a dominant running game (ie. the Steelers). Of course, we were never all that successful with it, and were never a dominant running team, but I think our player choices do reflect the types of schemes that the head coach wanted to run.

That being said, I think you're right that run blocking and pass blocking are two different beasts. While I did see some improvement (very slight) when Pitts moved to LT, what disturbed me the most was our complete inability to pick up a blitz. We'd even call it from the stands, watching the defense get ready to send someone that would hardly ever get picked up. Our RB, TE, and FB have simply been unable to add any level of protection to Carr from a blitz.

And the constantly collapsing pocket was always a sign that our line was getting pushed back on their heels. That part was about the only consistent thing about them. I'd get aggravated watching other NFL teams, when they'd create a pocket that actually allowed their QB to step up into it. Then go to a Texans game and watch our line become mush.

To me, that's the number one priority on this team - build an o-line that can consistently run block and pass block. I could care less about the two greatest college athletes in history if we don't address our line. No skill position is worth his weight in salt if they don't have the big men giving them holes to run through and pockets to pass from.

I think Bush is too small to be an effective pass blocker in the NFL.

DD is a bad pass blocker (and I am being generous). Bush is allegedly a very good pass blocker.

every play i saw he was on a route... Hes going to be a 3rd down at best for a RB... Then we might use him as a Flanker or a Slot WR. I seriously doubt he will ever be that everydown guy to have to learn how to pass block. He will always be on a route. When he gets in there the coaches are going say we dont need him blocking we need him down the field catching
