Ourlads' 2005 Mock Draft . . (are you kidding me?)

When I saw this mock draft, I thought of what someone else said. It went something like, "Jeez, I think I could come up with one better than that."

They have the Texans taking Shaun Cody with the 13th pick, when Derrick Johnson is still on the board. The Panthers are taking Elton Brown right after us, the Cowboys are picking Luis Castillo with the 20th, and Eagles are picking Eric Shelton with the 31st. And CBs Pac-Man Jones and Justin Miller not even taken in the 1st. I could go on and on . . like the Chargers, just ahead of us taking Mark Clayton over Mike Williams. :dontknowa

About the only thing I do agree with, is the 49ers taking Alex Smith with the 1st. (the QB, not the TE)

Here is NFL Draft Showcase's 3 round mock:

13.TEXANS Justin Miller, CB, Clemson
47.TEXANS Mike Patterson, DT, USC
73.TEXANS Brodney Pool, FS, Oklahoma
78.TEXANS Lance Mitchell, ILB, Oklahoma

I would ditch the Pool pick and from the folks available in this hypothetical pick up Chris Spencer C/G:

Strengths: Has good size...A very good athlete...Excellent quickness...Is extremely strong...Versatile and has experience at both guard spots as well as center...Smart and makes all the line calls...Still improving and has a lot of upside.
Weaknesses: Doesn't have a ton of starting experience...Has only played center for one full season with the Rebels...Will need to coaching and development to work on mastering the nuances of the position.
Notes: Was a top prospect coming out of the prep ranks...Should rank among the top centers available due to his size, athleticism and potential.

i like the way that sounds with mitchell and paterson as very good values. i wouldn't mind a offensive player in their some where.

Ourlads is generally very good from year to year and have pretty astute player evaluations. That said, Cody doesn't get much love from me. He could be better than I think though.

I also like this draft, although I can see other people going   if an OL isn't picked on the 1st day.

Some scouts are a little down on DJ, I'm not sure why. It may be that he's not great when the plays right at him. But his best position is weak side OLB in a 43, so he'll be playing almost 5 yards behind the line a lot, anyway. Just can't see so many defense starved teams passing Johnson up.

This mock was by longtime internet draft guru Brian DeLucia. Take it for what it's worth, probably no better or worse than you & I can come up with at this point.

I'm not sure if it's an issue of his skills (or perceived lack of talent)...he is a DE/DT tweener. The issue is if you want to play him as an undersized interior defender and maybe try to beef him up then he may lose some of his athleticism or do you have him as a DE that lacks the outside rush skill due to his size.

At the end of the day S. Cody is a pretty good football player that will find a home in the NFL...he's just probably not what the Texans are needing right now.

He is kind of a Hovan-tweener. He isn't real big at the point of attack and he isn't as fast as you need in an end rusher. I haven't seen him play enough to get a better feel for him.

:howdy: Ok who was a good 3-4 team . People think of the Steelers what about the Giants of the 80s. Their DL was George Martin, Jim Burt, Leanord Marshall . Marshall made Two pro bowls . Get your old football cards out and see how big he was and add 5%.

Wow...Castillo at 20? No Pac-Man? The chances of the draft ending up like this are highly unlikely, to say the least...

Meh at least it's different from most of the others I've seen...

Well Pac Man is short.. which may hurt his stock.. but I still dont see him getting out of the first. a late first day pick i would think.. at the worst.

Castillo could move up if he makes a good showing at the combine.. and there isnt much depth at all at DT.. so if there are teams out there that really need a DT... his stock could rise.

Clayton could beat out Williams if Williams has bad 40 speeds.. which is very possible.

And Derrick Johnson COULD fall to the mid first.. but I doubt it. It would take some bad workouts. Or a bad attitude that no one knows about yet.

All in all.. I think this mock is just an attention getter.. "come look at our site!" kinda thing.. it will be more accurate when there is real information to base it on.

i know there is a lot of people on this board that would absolutely love for derrick johnson to be the texans first pick but let's face it...he doesn't fit the texan's 3-4 defensive scheme...plus as much as ya'll don't like some members of our linebacking corp we have a pretty darn good set of guys at those positions...where would derrick johnson line-up at anyways...inside?...he's not big enough...he is in the mold of derrick brooks and would thrive in a cover 2 type defense...shaun cody is an excellent choice for us as well as marcus spears...hawthorne should get a nice long look as well...as for the ourlads mock draft...that is by far the worst one i've seen thus far...castillo is a 3rd rounder maybe fourth...not a 1st

:howdy: Until the combine its all hype . Except the Senior Bowl players . You'll have 4.4s turn into 4.6s . There will be 6ft 5 in OTs who are 6 ft 2.5 .

:howdy: Ourlads has an update . We now pick Marcus Spears DE LSU at 13 .

Wow...They still don't have Pac-Man going in the 1st...I like the Spears pick though...
