Orlando Pace a Texan? | Day 2

The deadline for a deal to get done is today at either 3 or 4, not sure which...

I heard 4, but that may have been EST...

Either way, we'll have our answer in a few short hours :excited: ...
 
Look there is no doubt Boselligate hurt us in many respects, but I like the fact they they are at least shooting for good players. I don't mind overpaying that type of player, I just don't like overpaying average plays like Greenwood, Robaire, Wade etc. But when you are a fairly young team it's almost a given to overpay some players in the beginning. thing is, we are now going into our 4th season with a 7-9 record so that stigma is slowly wearing off.
 
It is really a win win win situation for both teams and Pace if he signs with the Rams. Pace gets the long term contract he has been wanting. The Rams don't lose their prized francise LT that they desperately need to keep. The Texans showed Carr and the fans that they are willing to do what ever it takes to get him some protection. It may even motivate Wand this year. The best thing is that it didn't cost the Texans anything for the extra positives except dinner and a little time.

I think you hit on an important point. As an expansion team you are just not going to be an attractive place to play to a guy entering his prime years. Most of these guys want to be on a Super Bowl potential team and before this year we simply have had to pay more for second tier guys. I think with a strong season in 2005 we will be stepping past that.
 
I'm inventing a new verb right now ....... borased ..... we (the Texans and their fans) got borased by Pace and his agent ......
 
At this point after reading lots of articles I think it is about 99% that the Texans will not be getting Pace. Thats just about it.

Not really. We made an offer over a two-day period for one of the elite LT's in the game. I just don't see the comparison to the Astros situation where they led us around for the bulk of the off-season while we put all of our eggs in one basket.

Boselli had major issues with one shoulder and agreed to optional surgery on his other as well. The shoulder that was the big concern DID heal. Unfortunately, the doctor butchered the other shoulder and ruined Boselli's career. I would guess the league was focusing on the major injury when the Expansion Draft occurred. Who would have guessed that the OPTIONAL surgery would do him in?
 
We wanted veteran lines on both sides of the ball. I think the Boselli signing had as much to do with Seth Payne and Gary Walker as it had to do with Tony Boselli.

We did it because Payne and Walker were included, but I think Casserly expected Boselli to play. That would have made the acquisitions "dynamite" instead of "decent."

I realize that but the point remains why did the NFL pull a player who had been rehabbing a frankly more routine MCL injury in Roaf (7 time pro-bowler at that point--10 time now) off the table and leave the double shoulder operated Boselli on the table? Just would love to know why they did not either pull both or leave both and let the Texans make their own medical decisions. Just pointing out that people focus on the Boselli draft choice as putting the Texans back but there was a decision made prior to that by the NFL which was completely out of the Texans control and might have made a huge difference in the development of the club.

Since there are running plays that don't go right down through the Center, counters, sweeps, bootlegs, reverses, yeah I think the LT has a little to do with the running game. The LT and pulling guards have to seal the edge.

Yeah, but the Texans' doctors gave the clearance for the team to draft Boselli. And we don't know if the Texans asked the league to keep Boselli on the list (to facilitate the Walker & Payne inclusion in the expansion pool). I can't blame the league front office for the Boselli tribulations.

And virtually all of the blue chip FAs want to be on a playoff contender as their top priority (next to the $ of course). So in the mean time we have to pay a premium, lets call it the Xpansion team discrimination factor. But we have certain attractive features: our facilities are impressive/amoung the best, highly supportive fan base (theres no other sport that has parity with football in this region), climate - in PC terms the dominate cultural/ethnic type in the NFL vastly prefers a sunbelt climate to a rustbelt climate, and finally geography - hey this is Texas, along with FL & CA more football players have their origions/family here than elsewhere.
But once we begin to put in playoff appearances and along with the factors
above, we should become a beacon for blue chip FA players.
 
I am just glad he used the texans instead of another team. I can just see this board going crazy that we didnt try to get pace.

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams franchise OT Orlando Pace is expected to sign a seven-year, $52.8 million deal with the team Wednesday, March 16. The Rams revised their proposal Tuesday morning, March 15, and Pace would receive $18 million in signing bonus and $26 million in the first three years of the deal. If Pace signs the deal, it would topple the lucrative contract signed by OT Walter Jones (Seahawks), who received a $52.5 million deal.

It's not so much a blame thing as a curiosity--what was it about Roaf's knee that made the NFL pull him? Boselli had to be having pain in his shoulder at the time--he had pain the entire time he was a Texan.

To add to the what if?--what if the NFL had not cleared either for the expansion draft? The Saints traded Roaf to the Chiefs shortly before the draft for a conditional 4th round 2003 pick that became a 3rd rounder because he played all year--that would have been a no-brainer for the Texans to beat with an unconditional 3rd. Given the cap situation the Jags were in, they almost certainly would have waived Boselli. In that scenario do they pick up Boselli still--but without his huge contract, pick up Roaf, neither and are the Texans still able to get both Walker and Payne (remember the Jags were in a cap firepit)?

Hey it is the off-season and I get bored projecting 3rd round draft picks into 1st day starters and future hall-of-famers.
 
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. No guts, no glory. Name a few more cliches if you wish. All i know is that I like a team that has the cajones to even attempt a deal like this. Playing it safe buys you medicority. Look at a team like Arizona. Play it safe alot, and look where it has gotten them. Kudos to the FO for trying to pull off the unthinkable. :thumbup
