OMT's Quick Mock Draft

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
Alright guys... let me have it. Unfortunately we will have to navigate through the draft without the ability to fill many needs via free agency. I remain upbeat about our potential next year, and as General Manager... once the CBA has been signed I can promise you we will have a contract signed with either Nnamdi Asomugha or Ike Taylor.

1. Julio Jones - WR - Alabama - I'm not convinced he makes it to 11, but depending on the defensive players available... he's likely the BPA. Dre, Julio and Walter would be the best #1-3 WRs in the league.

2. DeAndre McDaniel - S - Clemson - Some say he's the best S in the draft, if not he's top 2 or 3. If he's available at our selection in the 2nd round, he would certainly address a... if not THE biggest need of our Texans. Tyler Sash out of Iowa could draw interest at this spot if McDaniel is gone.

3. Jarvis Jenkins - NT/DL - Clemson - Our scouts were busy in Clemson, SC this season. While all eyes were on arguably the #1 player in the draft, DaQuan Bowers... Jenkins was doing the dirty work in the middle. The JJ of the D will do the same for us and allow Mario to shine. A versatile D-Linemen that some compare to Vince Wilfork.

4. Dontay Moch - OLB - Nevada - Projected to be a 3-4 OLB, he would be a solid selection in the 4th round and address another need. Much interest is if Barwin returns to his old self... but Moch would provide insurance in the event CB's not ready. Could potentially start opposite Barwin as well.

5. Casey Matthews - ILB - Oregon - Looks as though Matthews may slip in this draft as many teams will peg him as undersized. He ends up in a good spot in Houston where he will be ILB depth .... behind the hopefully healthy Demeco Ryans and Brian Cushing. Look for Matthews to help on special teams early.

6. Justin Rogers - CB - Richmond - As one of the top small school prospects he will enter our mix at cornerback and special teams. He will have time to develop due to the acquisition of Nnamdi Asomugha or Ike Taylor (once the CBA is signed). Jackson and Quin relegated to #2 and 3 CBs spots.

7. Karl Klug - DE - Iowa - Klug will move from a 4-3 DT to the 3-4 DE position where he will have time to develop sitting behind Mario and Antonio. Hard working tough guy with a nonstop motor.

I like picks 2 and 3, McDaniel should make a great SS and I like Jenkins athleticism at DT/NT. Jenkins might take a year to gain some strength and experience but I think he's got lots of potential to be great. I like Jones but honestly don't think we can afford a luxury pick in the 1st round, we need all the help on D that we can get. Everyone else ehhhh.

I like your draft OMT, but wouldn't you as soon have Joseph or Grimes instead of Taylor?

I don't like picks #1 or #4 but everything else is all good with me.

I would rather "reach" on Justin Houston than take Jones in the first. That's just me, but I have a hard on for the guy. I think he will be a real stud as a 34 pass rusher.

Moch is a wasted pick in my book. I don't care what round it is. That guy will never do anything against a NFL OT.

If I'm cherry picking I keep all your other picks, but in the first I take Miller, Quinn, or Houston. In that order based on which ones are still available.

Then I take a WR in the fourth. Ronald Johnson (USC), Tandon Doss (Indiana), DeAndre Brown (Southern Miss), and Terrance Toliver (LSU) are some good guys that might still be hanging around at that spot.

If you can draft these guys, I vote for you to be the Texans GM! :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I havn't watched Joseph or Grimes as much as Asomugha or Taylor... I think Aso or Ike fit what the Texans look for in a CB (not saying Joseph/Grimes don't though). I've read some people on here don't really care for Taylor... I've liked what I've seen but then again I'm far from an expert. If Rick Smith signs one of the 4 mentioned here I'd be extatic... point is we need a legit #1 starting VETERAN cornerback. A very good safety in the draft will def. help our secondary too.

Moch is another guy I've seen some people not care for too much. In my mind, 4th round is a great spot if he's available. If one thinks he's a bust then no round is a good round. lol

I also really like Justin Houston and if he's the selection I'd be thrilled. Change the 4th to someone else... good WR choices you listed.

Thank you sir! As much as I want a stud, elite defensive talent... the more I look into Julio Jones the more I think he fits this team so well. He's the prototypical WR we would want. Gets open, catches the ball, great after the catch, special teams return ability and can block... oh and Saban coached him.

I've projected Julio Jones as BPA despite rumors Washington will select him, for a while. It makes sense, but maybe too much sense for Texans to follow along (reason why I switched to Ayers).

I still like Carter better @ FS but 76 has been beating McDaniel game film for his guy, guess it worked.

Jenkins projected inside & taking him in 3rd seems a bit risky. If using this high of pick would probably go with established NT prospect like Kenrick Ellis or Jerrell Pow. I don't see Wilfork in this guy, nowhere near that dominant or disruptive.

Project Mock as a mid third talent, higher for Texans maybe because of need. Also think he tests way to high @ combine to still be on the board in 4th.

Casey Matthews in 5th? a team is going to select him long before this. most likely 3rd no later than 4th.

Rogers isn't on my draft board not even in my top 50 CB list. Will check him out @ the combine.

Klug is interesting 7th rd. pick. generally like Iowa football players, very competitive even if not athletically gifted. Still probably special teams fodder.
