OL drafting approach

Has anyone here actually looked at Denver's history of drafting linemen during Shanahan and Kubiak's time there? It's quite interesting. In the 11 drafts since Shanahan took charge, Denver have drafted a grand total of three offensive linemen on the first day. Three, in 11 years. George Foster at 20 in 2003. Lenny Friedman at 61 in 1999. Dan Neil at 67 in 1997. That's it. Don't be surprised if we get through April 29th without drafting an offensive lineman - the sorts of players who fit the scheme are generally available well into day two.

Denver and Atlanta both run zone blocking schemes similar to what Kubiak will probably build toward. On their OL's last year they had each had 1 first day draft on their OL's (1 1st and 1 2nd). The remainder was made up of 2 4th's, 1 5th, 4 7th's and an undrafted player. While they will use a high draft pick if they find a player/value combo they like and may be more likely to do so this year to quickly develop the line and because there are a bunch of good 1st day prospects, they have leaned heavily on finding later round guys. Let's hope they get Casserly to go with the right guys.

denver also hasnt drafted a qb or rb in the first round in about 20 years. they're the odd team because they've typically built more heavily through FA than the draft ... kinda like we've seen over the last couple weeks.

At this point we actually have twice as many first day picks as second day
picks, having traded away 2 of the Sunday picks in FA trades. So chances are pretty good we'll get atleast one OLineman on Saturday.

I could see them looking for an OT on the 1st day either #33 (maybe Marcus McNEill or else Eric Winston if he falls) or #65 (Daryn Colledge), but I agree that we probably won't get any other OLineman the 1st day. Hopefully Chris Chester will fall to the 4th round.

This is off topic, but I hope that Denver trades up and gets Mario Williams. I was in the car talking to a buddy of mine and bottom line Mario on that team would be sweet. Talk about an upgrade over Courtney Brown and whoever else they have. Not likely gonna happen because well Chad Jackson and Mathias Kiwanuka or Tamba Hali are looking pretty nice, but it would be pretty sweet. They would become my top team on madden.
