OL Coach Cole Popovich

View attachment 15159
My initial reaction was…..NO WAY because he was with the OL this year.

But after doing some research he was a OL assistant under Dante Scarnecchia with the patriots for several years. I’m open to the idea of seeing how he does.
If this guy is a serious candidate why not pull the trigger earlier in the season. It's not like he wasn't available. Plus you would be going into the offseason with some knowledge of his capabilities. Maybe they were worried about continuity but to me they just wasted time spinning their tires in place.

Popovich was black balled by the league as one of the Covid vaccine holdouts. He’s working his way back into the league as assistant OL coach for the Texans last two seasons.

But I want a reset in OL coaching. I’d have to think if he was the guy he would’ve done more to fix this OL last season despite Strausser being the main OL coach. Not sure what will change promoting from within.

Popovich was a four-year starter as left guard on the Fresno State Bulldogs football team from 2004 to 2007. He was also named a unanimous Freshman All-American in 2005.[1]

Coaching career

[edit]
Popovich coached at the collegiate level for 5 seasons, working in various colleges such as Los Angeles Valley, Fresno City, Utah State, and Minot State[2] before joining the Patriots' staff in 2016.[3] He was part of the Patriots coaching staff that won Super Bowl LI. In the game, the Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 34–28 in overtime.[4] Popovich won his second Super Bowl title when the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.[5] In 2020 it was announced that he would become the co-offensive line coach with Carmen Bricilloin order to replace Dante Scarnecchia.[6][7]

Well atleast he did play some college ball and as offensive lineman. He might have more actual playing experience than a couple of NFL head coachs which seems important to me.
Youthful as he'll be just forty next month & married with two kids.
But I dunno what do you guys think about his background: impressed or not ?

The reality is that all the folks on the line are probably very good athletes and players. Numerous examples of players leaving one system after performing poorly and going to another system and having a resurgence are available. Can we keep many of these players and and install a "new system/culture" or is this a bad fit and we have to get rid of some personnel? I believe it is a bit of both. Specifically the system/culture issue. However, I would be surprised if this can be affected by an internal coaching hire promotion. He should have already been working on this.

Exactly. If they had concerns with Slausser why did he make 19 weeks?

Reading the comments on Slausser and his OL team just makes me wonder about Ryans outlook on pay for performance. How can you expect underachievers to develope into a successful line while providing 101 leadership. Hire from outside and get the best we can lure into our organization. Draft the best available OL player in the 1st round and plug him inside. Look for a pure center that has leadership skills in later rounds then let Patterrson and Scruggs battle for RG. We have some young players that can be very good or we can create an underachiever culture that lasts for years. I’m very concerned about this issue and hope it is being taken with serious action.

Sounds like you're a Jake Majors fan. I could get on board with drafting Booker or Milum in rd 1 and Majors in rd 4. Then draft a guy like Jalen Royals in the 2nd and Mason Taylor in the 4th.

If things went down this way, Give me a cheap CB/S in FA.

This line will never be a top line until Tunsil and his waste of space is jettisoned. But can things improve, even with Tunsil? Yes.

I’m not in favor of Cole. In not planting a seed from a piece of rotten fruit. He’s learned crap, and he will regurgitate the same crap. Crap in. Crap out. I want an outsiders perspective and a fresh start. We don’t need more OTJT. We need a proven hand. Munchak would be my dream candidate but get us a guy that has proven himself and a new beginning not the same old retread crap.

Who are we thinking to replace him?
I am all about John Benton!

John Benton was the Texans Offensive Line Coach 2006 thru 2013 (when the Texans had their best OLine in franchise history). He is a Alex Gibbs disciple, and is with out a doubt, is the best zone blocking OLine coach in the league. He joined the 49ers when Shanahan took over in 2017, He left to join the Jets, when Saleh took over the Jets in 2020. He was available the beginning of 2023 because he got let go from the Jets Oline Coaching job because of a DUI in 2022. He was still available this spring, but Klint Kubiack snatched Benton up as soon as he got the Saints Offensive Coordinator job.

He is now available because of the Saint's clean sweep of the entire coaching staff, but Benton was not one of the problems. He just got caught up in the general house cleaning.

I know he had just come off a DUI, but I still wish we would have hired him in the spring of 2023. He knows the the zone blocking scheme like no one else in the league, and he gets his Olinemen to run it. balls to the wall.

This guy knows what he is doing. We should not let him slip thru our fingers a second time (or maybe a third time depending how you look at it).

Benton 2025

I know that this is out of the question, but I would like them to hire Jeff Stoutland, the Eagles OL Coach
"Jeff Stoutland, the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, signed a contract extension with the team on February 5, 2023. The extension is long-term."

Jeff Stoutland is off the table unless you want to trade a player or draft pick for him.

So, who do you want THAT IS AVAILABLE?

It'll be interesting to see if an OL hire takes place before or after a decision by Slowik. Even though his contract is reportedly up after the season, by decision I mean if he gets a HC offer.

The only place we know that is interested in Slowik is the Jets and they are rumored to have the coach/gm combo

It is the Jets and screwing things up is the free square on the bingo card.

Benton 2025
I like Benton if the Texans stick with the ZBS. Just not sold that ZBS is the best way to go.

Here's another take on OL coach rumors
Chip Kelly Jeff Statland etc

This guy is so full of Sh__t. He always has been.

NOTE: "Jeff Stoutland, the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, signed a contract extension with the team on February 5, 2023. The extension is long-term.". The Eagles will not let him out of his contract unless you want to trade a player or draft pick for him.

Jeff Stoutland is NOT an option for the Texans Oline Coaching position.

Next idea please.

It’s an extreme longshot, but even under contract, things can happen. It’s maybe a 2% chance but not completely impossible.

I would give up this yrs 2nd for Southland.

He would be a game changer.

I wouldn't be against hiring Kelly and letting him bring in an OL coach even if that OL coach wasn't Southland. But I really want a guy like Munchak to be the next OL coach.

Hey I'm an ol Oilers fan so what can I say? Munchak? He was one of the best in offensive line position and all pro then no? Guard or tackle?

Where has he been since 2021 and why did he leave that position at Ohio state?

Head Coach at Tulsa

BTW, I wasn't advocating for him...Just posting tweets about our situation.

I did a quick look at Tulsa from this past season and it looks like despite some bad QB play they racked up almost 400 ypg and 25 ppg on offense...Problem is defensively they gave up almost 500 ypg and 43 whopping ppg...yikes....

Thanks for your information as I know little about him. It seems like Chip Kelly in the lead for offensive coordinator in opinions only.

Who the new team is going to be, will tell us quite a bit about the offensive scheme in 2025. It might not be just drafting or signing certain free agents but ones that would more fill the need of the new coordinator.

Couldn’t agree more. Now, I’m not saying I know Jerrod Johnson would be a bad OC. I just think they should clean house and get proven coaches in the building.
well... a video was posted in another thread recently where Zierline actually says Slowik was that guy, so I'm just going to have to wait & see. I agree, I'd rather go with a proven guy. But... I'm ride or die, whatever DeMeco chooses I'll support him at least until week 1 of the 2025 season.

Not a regular game one? That is a short leash.
