Just finished reading the A++ wish of another poster and decided to present a little bit different plan.
Coaches
I might be the only person here who likes him, but I believe that Brian Billick could do a real good job with this team. The man is known as an offensive coach yet he has won with the tremendous D built in Baltimore by Newsome. If they cut him loose it would seem to me that the Texans ought to really consider him for our opening. Bring in someone like Mike Singletary to run the D and some younger (college?) coaches to TEACH our young guys to play.
Free Agency
I say we let everyone but Gaffney, Armstrong, Peek, Ragone, and Orr bounce. With the record we have there is no need to keep around anybody that is not moving in the direction of our franchise. There should be two kinds of players on this team, guys who are improving and guys who are at their peak. Regarding free agents from other squads we have to go full tilt after Steve Hutchinson to put at OG. Obviously you sign a few men for depth, but the way free agency has gone for us I am not sold on really being able to get quality guys without overpaying and Hutchinson is the one that is worth overpaying a little bit.
Draft
If we get the 1 there is a lot to think about but if we get the 2 there is no doubt that you trade down. If Bush does to Texas what he has done to everyone else and if we determine that we canot get quality starters in the third round then you take Bush. But if Texas can really slow him down and if we do determine that we can address some of our needs for quality starters in the third round you have to trade. I belive they will decide to trade and they should get ATLEAST a first and second this year and a first and third next year to move down to 4 or 5(SF or NYJ). The extra pick next year could be used for Adrian Peterson or whoever is next year's "it" player. I would draft the following players with our picks:
1-D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT Virginia
2-DeMeco Ryans LB 'Bama (or Thomas Howard LB UTEP)
2-Martin Nance WR Miami (Oh.)
3-Davin Joseph OG OU (or Charles Spencer OG Pitt)
3-Darryl Tapp DE Va. Tech
4-Aaron Harris LB Texas
5-David Thomas TE/H Back Texas
6-E.J. Whitley OT TT
7-Moe Thompson DE S. Carolina
Conclusion
With the FA move and the draft we set up an offense that can grow together for the nextseveral years. In the short term our passing should be much improved and wih the addition of a top RB in 07 we could be scary. The D will at least be improved although not as much as the O. Hopefuly with a good year next year and the extra picks we can address the D a bit more next year. Anyway, that is what I think the Texans should be looking at in terms of one option to make the team repectable. Comment away!
