Offseason movement

Hey all, been a bit since I have been here. I have been heavily involved in the FA market in Buffalo and haven't been paying much attention to what is happening, outside the big namers, around the league.

No one knows better than the fan base weather or not it looks like a good free agency market for their team. I was just interested on your opinion of how the Texans are doing in the FA... as far as filling the positions you as fans deem most important to be filled?

So often times I see "so and so, a wide reciever, signed with so and so team who already has 5 WRs", and people are like "yeah but we got a superstar with a big name now!!!" How is that filling a position you were soft in?

Anyhoo, I figure you guys (Sorry, I'm a New Yorker, I mean everybody, ladies included) who are still hangin' here durring FA are the die hards and more realistic than the casual fan. So what is your take on the Texans Free Agency signings? Have you addressed the needs of the team? Financial management is important too, has the team made their moves wisely,without burying themselves in the future?

Well, we signed Morlon Greenwood as you probably have read. Some are concerned about his size. He is said to be a playmaker that is underrated. We definitely need to improve our pass rush. His signing will at least provide some flexibility in shuffling our LB's around to try and develop a group that best supports stopping the run and getting to the QB.

A lot of us think we need help in the O-Line, but that has not been addressed. We resigned Payne in hopes that he will remain healthy and anchor the D-line.

I'm not aware of any other pending developments. Looks like we will be anxiously anticipating the draft.

There has been some talk of Jamie Sharper and Jay Foreman being given permission to seek trades. That could translate into some new faces, but it's too early to tell.

We could definately use some help at left tackle too. Losing Jennings was pretty big, but the niners got burned. The guy averaged playing 9.6 games per season. He stayed out hurt for a frikken hangnail.

So we are in the same boat.

I saw the Greenwood signing. He is surrounded by big name, big playmakers in Miami and is just overshadowed by their names. He is a great player, with tons of drive, tons of heart, and tons of talent. I assure you he will make a great contribution to the secondary, and this is coming from a team who plays opposite him 2 times every year.

Wow. Coming from a Bills fan, that's an interesting take on Greenwood! Surprised me a bit.

Sorry, though. I have to take issue with calling Greenwood a "playmaker" because he hasn't actually MADE a big play in the NFL. Of course, now that he's here I really do hope he becomes the best LB in NFL history, but I don't see that as being very likely.

This team has serious issues on its OL and DL. So far they managed to keep the same damaged DL intact, then signed a LB with no proven track record who was a weak link in Miami. They've also re-signed a number of quality players.

So right now there's still nothing done about the offensive line (which, considering this year's FA market, may not be a negative) and a likelihood that a FA receiver will be needed to replace Bradford soon. Some good re-signings but nobody KNOWN to be talented has been added from the outside. (Morlon, this IS your chance to live up to your pedigree.)

So I'm not impressed yet, but I'm not stomping mad either. I like that Houston's keeping some guys around--I'm just not sure Payne should've been one of them. Too hard to judge the success of all this until after the draft, to see the rest of the puzzle pieces...and even then, we'll need camp to see what they got.

I'm a Bills Fan, but a realist too. There are few times I will outwardly hammer a guy who may not deserve it but I don't hammer guys because of what team they play on. I am a football fan, and have been for longer than alot of you guys have been alive (sucks being old... er ).

Anyways, keeping the core of a good team is important. I really felt you guys were coming together last year. Just a bit of help and you could be running at the playoffs this year. I saw an above avearge set of core players last year, and watched Carr start to take the reigns and become a leader. The kid impresses me. He has taken a while to mature, but I see him doing better things this year. Leaders win the big games, not numbers (look at Dan Marino's stats, and his Superbowl record, and for that matter look at Jim Kelly's, then look at Montana ). I'll be interested in how things progress for you guys in the draft.

You have good, respectable members here (texansgal8 is awesome!!!), and a good team with classy players... So I will be rooting for you guys. Although it will be for you to come in second to the Bills, but you know what I mean

Greenwood's size wont be an issue. hes the right size for an ILB in hte 3-4.

Also.. ive heard that the biggest knock against him is his lack of "big play" potential. Meaning.. you dont see him intercepting, forcing fumbles, things of that nature.

honestly that is inconsequential to us. The important thing is his speed, his coverage ability, and his tackling ability. if all he does is his job (meaning, plays well in coverage, and makes good tackles), then he will have been a great pickup for us.

he is a huge upgrade in speed.


That is the only FA we have signed that wasnt on our roster last year. We have resigned Demarcus Faggins (our awesome nickle CB), Seth Payne (our vet DT), and Moran Norris (great blocking FB). those were our big signing IMO.

Sharper and Foreman are on the trading block. Foreman will most likely be gone, but Sharper could possibly restructure his contract. Personally, I think both will be gone and we will be making a strong push for DJ in the draft.

AMEN TO THAT. I'm no more in favor of massive annual free agent sprees (hello, Redskins) than I am in favor of firing coaches who continue to lead the Texans to better records each season so far. Very happy to see the Texans valuing stability and steady improvement. I think it'll pay off, and it's a safer bet than blowing out the cap on one or two studs who force a salary-cap crisis on the team a year or two later.

As for the Bills, well, now that I despise the traitorous Oilers I don't have anything against 'em anymore. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm not here to troll. I apreciate your stepping up.

A few of you guys came to our board and were very cool... I am returning the favor. I don't have issue with any of you guys, and I root for your team as well. I like the AFC and I like talkin ball... and getting others views from around the league... most of you have proven very cool, and knowledgeable. So I chose to come here.

Even if some of you don't like my team, at least show the same respect I am showing you
