**Official Game-Day Thread** Preseason Texans at Rams, Saturday Aug 25, 2018!!

Some quick off the cuff thoughts following the Rams game:

1) Rankin looks thicker than I thought. He played stout, as well. But, he went brain dead on a pass pro and got Webb clobbered. He needs more reps, and there's only one preseason game left.
2) I count 7 locks to make the team in the secondary. I can see as many as 2 DBs picked off the waiver wire.
3) I've seen enough of Kendall Lamm to conclude he is not be a NFL OT. Please keep looking for a swing Tackle, Mr. Gaine.
4) If the Texans can't find a roster spot for Vyncint Smith, he will get picked up. Not going to be able to sneak Smith on the practice squad.
5) Do the Texans really have a backup QB? I'm not so sure. Not opposed to looking hard at QB after the final cuts.

No, the Texans don’t have a backup QB. Both Webb and Weeden would be destroyed if they have to go against good defenses. We saw it with Weeden and Savage last year.

This was the worst game I have ever sat through. The depth at Qb and OL is atrocious. About halfway through the 2nd quarter, there were a ton of 3rd stringers in on defense. Made it painful to watch.

Naaah.... some of those Carr games were worse. And they counted.

We need a much better backup. We have no offense at all with Weeden in the game. Need to see what the Jets want for Bridgewater. Howie Roseman and Doug Pederson showed how you win in the NFL on 2018 with quality backups and aggressive play calling. We are doing the opposite.

We've always had crappy backup QBs. Why are you trying to mess with tradition?

So are we not going to superbowl???

Didn't watch.

This thread is nothing but shame on the texans.

Good thing we open at Ne and not at home vs Jax right?

Man we need a kicker lol

Drafting that fat Aggie when no one draft kickers is still haunting us

Worse than drafting the fat Aggie is keeping the fat Aggie over Chris Boswell who was just given a raise by the Steelers.

Has anybody been watching DQ?
Looking for a progress report.
He looked very good again today. Prior to today, he's the only OLineman I've seen moving guys out of the way on run plays and I've been surprised to see how well he's doing in pass protection. But I'm not sure if he'll make the team because of Manz's versatility and we haven't yet seen the motion sets we ran w/ Watson last year where we zone blocked and used misdirection where Fulton and Kelemete have a leg up on DQ w/ their mobility. Maybe someone can comment on DQ's practice squad eligibility (not sure if he has any left iirc) but if he's cut, I think he has looked good enough that he should be picked up by another team w/ a power blocking scheme and may even get significant playing time. If there's a way to hang onto him, I'd like to do it because it would improve our short running game. As a side note, I don't see the sense of having Prosch on the team if we're not going to have someone like DQ to run behind for the short yard situation.

Rankins is the other guy that I saw moving people back in the run game. He's got some power and seems to play w/ a mean streak. It was a very mixed bag for Rankins today though. He looked great on some plays and bad on others (looked like he took a mental vacation on one play where he literally didn't engage the guy across from him and watched him maneuver around himself for a qb pressure). Probably what you would expect for a guy's first appearance in a while but it bears watching if he can be consistent as he showed talent today. But Rankins next to DQ can move some people around. On the long run by Blue -- Rankins, DQ and Mancz mauled their guys and Slade sealed off the backside nicely for the kind of hole you haven't seen much for the last couple of years. Mancz seems to be stronger than Martin and does just as well in pass pro -- I really wish draft position didn't factor into the depth chart, but so far this seems to be the case w/ Martin vs Mancz. It actually appears that we have some depth in our interior OL. OT remains the question mark and I think we saw the potential from Rankins today but it's way too early and he wasn't consistent enough to say that he is part of the answer.

I believe that he still does. I addressed this in the Injury Thread about 2 weeks ago..................http://www.texanstalk.com/posts/2842080/

It was a short day for Deshaun Watson, who played three series against the Rams and was 3-of-6 for 15 yards and an interception. His performance was a far cry from how sharp he looked last week, but the only thing that matters is he has finished the preseason healthy.

I'm not really sure that I want to keep hearing something like that said about Watson.
I'm not sure what you mean. I thought you were a proponent of minimizing Watson's exposure to re-injury.

Now I would have left the offensive 'ones' out there until they showed some production. O'Brien let them sit before that happened IMO.
Is that what you're talking about or do you see some other meaning in the bolded?

Completely agree. We have come slow out of the gate offensively the past several seasons and it looks like O’Brien isn’t doing a damn thing to change it.

The dude is very delusional and borderline Kubiak-ish in the terms of thinking his way is the best in the business. At least with Kubiak his skit was proven. The third preseason game suppose to be for getting your first teamers much needed chemistry and rhythm. Especially when you have a new revamped line. Not only that why didn't Henderson start? Oh and we do play the mighty Tom Brady and the Patriots week 1.

Nice post dude - agree with everything you said.
Be nice if we could have the ability to run the ball - would open up the passing game more for DW4.
Personally, I think they hang on to DQ - they stuck with him through his battle with the big C so I really can't see them kicking him to the kerb now. Otoh, Prosch has been disappointing and we definitely need all the oline help we can get.

Staying healthy without production is simply a false state of accomplishment...........for any team.........for any player.

looking around the league the staying healthy "only" seems to be a theme even in Week 3...lots none playing the starters and few people playing the full half of football.

I tried. It was a post regarding Watson, right? I don’t see how my question to you is out of context with what you posted.
My statement was never a prediction of Watson's future production, just a statement that I would not want any media to have reason to repeatedly use that phrase.........whether for Watson or any other player.

I've never seen that happen before. Players that struggle out of the gate from a major injury are usually over scrutinized, if anything.

After all is said and done, it was Coach O'Brien who lost the game. Going for it on 4th and goal from the 11 with plenty of time left! It's true the kicker isn't much, but the FG was still far better odds than trying to pick up those 11 yards with one play.

Watson could get hurt the first offensive play against New England.
Don't say that! We know it's a matter of when he gets hurt, not if. We also know NE will be playing to break his leg. But it doesn't have to be early. Let's hope he stays intact through most of the season.

The way I see it the backup QBs need a hell of a lot more game action in the preseason than Watson. And there’s no sense in leaving Watson in a preseason game until he “accomplished something”. That might not have happened until the 3rd quarter when 3rd stringers are out there playing with wreckless abandon trying to earn a spot by blasting Watson. And guess who you guys would blaming if Watson was injured, out for the season because O’Brien kept him out there because he wanted to see Watson “accomplish something”?

Btw, I see some of you have already penciled in a scapegoat in case the Texans lose game #1. Not that I needed any extra incentive to root for the Texans to beat New England but now I’ve got it anyway.
