Rams will test outside linebackers, pass rushers and backups on offensive line against Texans on Saturday
Preseason NFL games are not high-stakes affairs, unless you are a rookie offensive lineman charged with protecting the franchise’s most valuable asset.

That’s the assignment the Rams’ Joseph Noteboom initially drew for Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans at the Coliseum.
Veteran Andrew Whitworth is sitting out preseason games, so Noteboom will start at left tackle in what was supposed to be quarterback Jared Goff’s first and only preseason action.

“You definitely don’t want him getting pressure or touched,” Noteboom said.


Noteboom’s job will remain the same, but he probably will once again be protecting the blind side for backup quarterback Sean Mannion.

Coach Sean McVay indicated Thursday that Goff is on track to sit out the entire preseason, which ends next week at New Orleans. Whitworth and veteran center John Sullivan are not playing against the Texans and, of more immediate concern, right tackle Rob Havenstein is nursing an ankle injury.

The risk Goff would face taking snaps behind rookies and backups — with Texans lineman J.J. Watt and edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney on the other side of the line of scrimmage — is too great.

On a day when McVay said that running back Todd Gurley definitely would not play, he did not make the same definitive proclamation regarding Goff. Havenstein’s availability Saturday, McVay said, “will definitely have an impact on what we do.”

But with the Rams investing heavily in players for a possible run to the Super Bowl, McVay is expected to play it safe to ensure that Goff and all starters are physically sound for the Sept. 10 opener against the Oakland Raiders on “Monday Night Football.”

Because their starting LT Whitworth is expected to be out it sounds like Goff won't be playing today and that's understandable since why would they risk the franchise QB with a backup rookie tackle protecting him in a meaningless exhibition game vs Clowney, Watt, and others. Sounds like Gurley is also sitting.
So maybe we get the entire starting Rams D except for holdout Donald of course.
 
I believe that this game will end up being mostly evaluation of non starters, as when the whistle blows, we are unlikely to see many "main characters." I don't know that this game is going to be the Texans test we thought it was going to be. It will be interesting to see who ultimately ends up playing any meaningful snaps on either side. Although our starters would benefit from getting some decent prep reps, if they play, I would hope that the Rams do not end up playing a lot of scrubs that are hungry to "kill" to make an impression......sort of what not uncommonly happens in game 4.

Looks like Suh will be playing. He always sees the Texans QB as "red meat"............and will be salivating over Watson like he were "filet mignon"............

Suh/Brockers etc... should give the Texans revamped OL a good test. I wish Donald was playing.

I dunno who's playing over Davenport ? Is Brockers on the other side, and he's their best edge rusher right ?
Is the Rams front 7 that good ?
 
@AaronWilson_NFL: Texans WR Will Fuller wont play in today's road preseason game against Rams after tweaking a hamstring in practice this week.

But a front four that consists of Brockers, Suh, Donald is really good.

Do you have the NFL.com app on Verizon? You can probably watch the game and listen to Tillman get linear on your phone. If you don't have Verizon, it could be problematic.
 
I'd like to see the Texans try to run on the Rams. They were 28th against the run last year, and I don't think Suh will make that much of a difference. I think he'll sell out to get to Watson. Screens could break big, also.

@LindseyThiry: The Rams will NOT PLAY their starters on offense today against the Texans. The starting defense will play.

If OB plays the 3rd preseason game like he has since he arrived. Going to be as close as to game situation as possible meaning personnel will be used accordingly.
 
Spencer Tillman just said that J.J. Watt is looking like the defensive MVP of old that dominated from 2012 to 2015. Has Watt played enough snaps this preseason to access that, or is Tillman just going by practices? Tillman didn't elaborate but I like the sound of what he said.
 
I don't want to see Lamar Miller running up the gut anymore. Such a wasted play (stuffed again) that cost us two road wins last year against the Patriots and Seahawks.

And the guy we should have signed for some depth, Adrian Peterson, broke off a couple big gains up the middle for the Redskins in their last preseasons game after recently signing him.

You would think Bill O'Brien isn't an idiot.
Use Lamar Miller in space. He's not a north and south runner.
